From New York Times bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the first in a new thriller series.
Everyone wondered about Shaye Archer’s past. Including Shaye.
Shaye Archer’s life effectively began the night police found her in an alley, beaten and abused and with no memory of the previous fifteen years, not even her name. Nine years later, she’s a licensed private investigator, with a single goal—to get … single goal—to get answers for her clients when there aren’t supposed to be any.
And maybe someday, answers for herself.
Emma Frederick thought her nightmare was over when she killed her abusive husband, but someone is stalking her and tormenting her with mementos from her past. With no evidence to support her claims, the police dismiss her claims as post-traumatic stress, but Shaye is convinced that someone is deliberately terrorizing Emma…playing a cat and mouse game with only one goal in mind.
To kill Emma.

The main character Shaye Archer has a very interesting past. This book is well written with a good plot and interesting characters throughout. Looking forward to the next book.
I’m recovering from a broken foot, and a friend loaned me his Kindle and recommended Malevolent, a book he discovered through BookBub. Shaye Archer is a fascinating protagonist. She was found badly injured and drugged at the age of fifteen and doesn’t remember anything about her captors. Her adoptive mother is a wealthy politician’s daughter and a social worker, and the bond between her and Shaye is what anyone would wish for in a parent/child relationship. To her mother’s dismay, though, Shaye becomes a private investigator. She’s determined to help people the police seem unable or unwilling to assist. Driven by the crimes against her, she takes the case of a woman being stalked and moves heaven and earth to solve the mystery. The police believe the woman’s problems are psychological, as she killed her abusive husband and now the person stalking her inexplicably seems to be that very same man. Great supporting characters, suspense, and twist ending. I’ve been reading even more private eye novels than usual lately because I started writing a mystery series, and this is my favorite to date. I’ve now read the first three Shaye Archer books within two weeks (lots of time elevating my foot these days) and am starting the next today. I wish there were a hundred. (There are five to date. Hoping the next is released soon.)
When people say read this, it’s a page turner, I think hmm. But this new series with the character Shaye is really a book you might read in one sitting because you can’t put it down.
The characters are believable, the plot is tight, and happily for me it is her first in the series. The stalking of a woman, her dead husband still scaring her and you think paranormal but no, just a good mystery with many layers.
I love Shaye and her relationship with her adoptive mom. It was so darn refreshing to
have Shaye work with a detective and not have a romance ……I find romance a bit hard with dead bodies and people in danger.
The plot becomes twisted and creepy so don’t read this late at night by window….i warned you.
It was gravity defying!
I loved the distinct characters in this books. They were rich in personal history and atypical challenges that made their story obstacles harder to face and overcome, which made for an entertaining and very enjoyable read. Jana DeLeon spread her creative wings. I’ve very much liked her Miss Fortune series, yet this series highlights her serious creative side and does so with panache!
Love the series….kinda ended up binge reading all available books. In a week. I blame them for the mountain of unwashed laundry and dishes. Not my total lack of self control. I DID still make it to work- so see it can’t be me. It can’t. Can’t wait for the next one, and do we ever find out the street kids real name? He is one of my favorite characters, but we learn the real names of far less important street kids than his…. and he is kind of a main character. Just say’n.
This book was a great read! All the way through it keeps you hooked with great characters and suspense that never stops! The “left field” twist at the end is a little odd, but still worth reading for sure.
This twisted story kept me coming back every spare minute I had to read. I did not guess that outcome for the villain. Genius. Loved this page turner.
Great read, couldn’t put down . Reminded me of the JDRobb Death series that I loved. Cant wait to continue this series.
This book held my interest and I couldn’t put it down. Immediately the story and the characters grabbed me. This author absolutely knows how to connect the character to the readers, giving us a vested interest in their lives.
Amazing story.
Shaye Archer’s character itself was not a normal one and kept me riveted on the story. The plot and premise of the story was multi layered and the twists and turns of the story were enjoyable till the very end.
Really good book. I would have never guessed the ending.
good plot and story
Emma is being stocked by her dead husband! Impossible, right? But that’s exactly how it looks until Shaye Archer, a private investigator, delves into this non-stop nail biter and unravels a diabolical secret so horrible it keeps everyone guessing until the very end. Shaye is a woman with a horrible past but, because she has a great support system in her friends and family, she wants nothing more than to help the victims of New Orleans and put away the bad guys. I found this story quite believable, though really sinister, and the characters personable. I definitely will read the rest of the series and highly recommend this one.
What a great series!
Such an excellent author
Prefer her funny, laugh out loud Miss Fortune series. Not everyone can write humorous mysteries.
This book sucked me right in. An edge of your seat thriller. Plus a twist that I wasn’t expecting.
Incredibly well written, well defined characters and a storyline that doesn’t let you go. Highly recommended.
I loved all the books in the group
