#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES, THE GUARDIAN, AND SUSPENSE MAGAZINE • Stephen King calls Jack Reacher “the coolest continuing series character”—and now he’s back in this masterly new thriller from Lee Child. “Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?” That’s all Reacher wants to know. But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a … But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a thousand square miles of wheat fields, with a railroad stop, and sullen and watchful people, and a worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal.
Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there, and there’s something about Chang . . . so he teams up with her and starts to ask around. He thinks: How bad can this thing be? But before long he’s plunged into a desperate race through LA, Chicago, Phoenix, and San Francisco, and through the hidden parts of the internet, up against thugs and assassins every step of the way—right back to where he started, in Mother’s Rest, where he must confront the worst nightmare he could imagine.
Walking away would have been easier. But as always, Reacher’s rule is: If you want me to stop, you’re going to have to make me.

Don’t Mess With Jack
It’s been while since I spent time with Jack Reacher and reading, Make Me, was like getting reacquainted with an old friend.
Reacher, on his way to Chicago, gets off the train in a little town called, Mother’s Rest. The name appeals to him and he thinks it might make an interesting side trip for the day, or at least that the local diner has good coffee.
But almost immediately Reacher observes odd behavior by the locals and another out-of-towner that piques his interest. Within a few hours, Reacher changes the trajectory of his travel plans to help out an attractive and somewhat mysterious private detective named, Chang. As is usually the case with Reacher, one thing leads to another, little things that churn up his lizard brain become bigger things and he determines to set things right. And we’re off to the races.
Make me, is a tense thriller that, I think, will deliver a surprise dending to even devoted Reacher fans and in some ways, shows the softer side of Reacher which I really liked. It also made me wonder if we might be seeing a recurring character in upcoming Reacher novels. It’s gotta get lonely for old Jack to always be on the road alone. A solid 5-star read.
Lee Child’s flowing, flowing writing does not leave the reader indifferent. Another book recommended for fans of Jack.
I love the Jack Reacher character and always ready to read the latest book in the series.
Keeps me waiting for the next book
Jack Reacher is one of my top 5 favorite characters. He does so many things I would like to do, but do not have the skills or fortitude to to try. He fixes what he can fix, improves what he cannot fix, and knows the difference. He also encourages others to take a stand and at least try to fix their own problems.
With Jack Reacher, no moment is dull.
Another great book by my favorite author. Hope to see this one made into a movie.
When Reacher asks a simple question he has a reasonable expectation of getting an answer, as does most anyone. So when he asks why this place in the middle of a mammoth corn field is called Mother’s Rest he’s understandably bemused when he gets shrugs and non-answers from the locals. As if it’s a deep, dark secret. Then he meets former FBI agent turned private investigator, Michelle Chang who has nearly given up hope that her associate will be on the next incoming train. At his request she was to meet him here and she mistakes Reacher for him. Reacher’s curious nature about the origin of the town’s name leads to a tangled web of secrecy that belies the innocence of his inquiries. Far be it for Reacher to back down from a challenge though and soon the locals are hell bent on a cover-up of massive proportions. What Reacher and Chang have to figure out is what they’re hiding and what makes it worth the huge investment. Plus they still don’t know what happened to Chang’s associate and why he wanted her help.
I had “Make Me” marked as “Read” in my Goodreads list so this is officially a re-read and I’m happy to note that I thoroughly enjoyed it the second time around, possibly more so than the first. This is pure, unadulterated Reacher. Author Lee Child is a master craftsman. He has honed Reacher like a fine-tuned instrument and Book number twenty in the series is so tightly plotted that the town’s dirty secret is a last minute blockbuster reveal. Hang onto your seat when you start this one. Five stars
It starts out very slow for me, but then it ramps up and becomes a page turner. I claimed I had insomnia but in reality I just couldn’t stop reading
Lee Child is an amazing author. The Jack Reacher novels are always on my “buy” list and read immediately.
Did not like nthe gruesome ending.
Just read all the Reacher books, so couldn’t pass on this one
too gruesome
Jack Reacher’s curiosity pulls him into another hair-raising adventure. Jack gets off the train in Mother’s Rest. All he wants to know is how the town got its name. Before he gets an answer, Jack teams up with former FBI agent, Michelle Chang who is trying to find a work associate who went missing in Mother’s Rest. As they fly back and forth across the country looking for answers, the trail of bodies gets longer. Reacher has NO mercy for those who prey on innocents.
The town ‘Mother’s Rest.’ The name intrigues Reacher as he travels the US, thinking he’d like to see the grave/statue/plaque and learn the story of the possibly tragic tale from Westward expansion of the Nation, he gets the train. Instead he finds a former FBI agent looking for her partner and a Town with a twisted, deadly secret.
Could not guess the ending.
I like all of the Reacher Series. It’s always suspenseful as the tail winds on.
