This is Magnus and Modwen…as only EMMANUELLE DE MAUPASSANT can tell you in her writing.
I like this story very much as it takes you into each mans story and how he becomes part of the new life that awaits with the VIKINGS!
Excellent detail and thought into the main characters and secondary characters the play part of the whole picture of new life in this village blending Norse custom and the new religion of Christianity.
Nicely done!
I had recieved this as an ARC but life’s tribulation and my being ill got in the way .
This is my thoughts on this book freely given.Emmanuelle de Maupassant
I’ve been getting more and more into Viking romance, and yum! Magnus did not disappoint!
The best way to recommend this book is to tell you that this author knows her craft. She has obviously studied the era and way of life of the people. Her scenes are so well described that you can easily picture an accurate vision. But best, and crucial to this story, is her ability to delve into the emotions and motives of the characters. Bad folks are not always bad, good not always good because circumstances mold and change us all. Being able to understand motives makes for a tale of real depth and truth that you will enjoy. A “do not miss” for fans of the Viking genre.
Magnus tried to live his life according to Odin and yet he could not save his wife or bring her back. Now his Jarl has made a pact with this Pictish village and he is to take a new wife and help build a new life and community.
Modwen had previously been married but her husband’s death in one of the skirmishes left her with two children and her husband’s disabled Uncle. After finding herself paired with Magnus she went to offer herself to her husband as was his right only to be rejected. Their story is heartbreaking and heartwarming. Emotionally, mentally and physically demanding. Their story went deep to the heart of all human beings. Emmanuelle de Maupassant leads us right where we need to be.
A Loving Viking!
This is a story filled with fiery passion and a love born in emotional and physical pain.
To begin with, Magnus takes a wife as this is what his leader has ordained, but she will be a wife in name only as he is haunted by the memory of his first wife who died a horrible death when he wasn’t around to protect her.
It is also a second marriage for Modwen and she cannot understand why Magnus avoids her.
Being a romance story, you will be relieved to know that they do find their way around each other and do fall passionately in love.
Oh my goodness! What a story!
The narration is very interesting in that there are two narrators, one a male (James Magnum) and the other is a female (Violet Knight) and both with interesting and fitting accents which enhance the reading.
I loved all of it and more this time around than when I read the ebook last year. There is just something about a good narration that just makes the story come alive.
Definitely not one to be missed!
I was gifted a copy of the audiobook and my voluntary review above is based on my own thoughts and is unbiased.
Fantastic Story & Listen Captivating & Heartfelt!
Magnus
A Viking Warrior Romance: Viking Surrender, Book 5
By: Emmanuelle de Maupassant
Narrated by: James Magnum, Violet Knight
This is a fantastic story, it is a well written, well told historical romance. It place around the year 912 AD and is set in Scotland. The book is part of the Viking Surrender Series, while the story stands on its own, I do recommend reading and/or listening to “Vikings” the first book in the series. It is the prologue to the series and shows how and why the Vikings take root in Achnaryrie Village. It gives a better understanding to the characters relationship. Emmanuelle de Maupassant’s contribution to the series is a great one, this is Magnus and Modwen’s story and what a story it is. Magnus never got over the brutal death of his wife, he blames himself for not protecting her from the savages that attacked her. He is not happy about his new situation, a marriage coming out of a deal made by his leader. He is a husband in name only to the widow of the towns forger. Modwen lost her husband and accepts the deal made to bring men in to help bring their once flourishing town back to its glory. She now has a new husband, in name only since he wants nothing to do with her. Magnus must let go of his guilt and rid the inner demons that haunt him. I loved how everything plays out in this book, it is well plotted and there is never a dull moment with plenty of drama, angst, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt ones and slow burn romance.
I listened to the Audible edition, James Magnum and Violet Knight are terrific narrators and voice artists. They bring the characters to life, give each their own voice and personality. They did a great job portraying the characters, humanizing them with their emotions and passion. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen
Magnus and Modwin. Two people thrown together to find a new life. But Magnus will forever feel guilt from losing his beloved wife a decade ago. He wants nothing to do with Modwin. Modwin wants a new future for her and her two children. This is their story. Tragic. Heartfelt. Action. Steam. Great entertainment!
I listened to Audible version with dual narration. Both narrators did excellent job. I just had to get use to all the “w” words starting with “v.” Vife. Varrier. Vild, etc. Ha!
I ha the opportunity to listen to this as an audio book. I enjoyed this listen very much. It’s not overly long or complicated but it is very good. Quality over quantity here. I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s a good listen with dual narration, which I really liked.
I have to say that this is one of my favorite books, I ordered it not knowing it was a series and now I will definitely be buying book 1 from this amazing author. Emmanuella de Maupassant is one of my favorite authors today! Her books, page turner, steeeeeeeamy and delicious characters. Her plots of the stories are on point! and always a SURPRISE ending! you won’t be disappointed with this amazing author.
Happy reading !
Fast-paced historical romance that sees two strangers marry and try to work through their differences. The story is brilliant, I loved the characters and there’s plenty of chemistry and steam between the main characters.

Reluctant Viking 4 ½ stars – What guilt and self-punishment does to Magnus. Even though it’s a short story, it is packed with emotion, violence, and events that affected the outcome of the story. It is a well-told story which makes me interested in looking up the other Vikings that settled in Modwen’s village. [I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.]
Emmanuel de Maupassant weaves the most amazing stories packed with raw emotions, adventure, and intrigue, love and everlasting hope. “Magnus” is an exceptionally well written story by a superbly talented author of a Viking warrior and blacksmith, a man with a heavy heart who bears the guilt over the loss of his first wife. Modwen is a captive bride, a woman of strength who endeavors to hope in the future. Two people who have lost the ones that they loved, forced together by circumstances they can’t control. It’s a wonderful plot written with such sensitivity of the times and hardships, a beautiful story of love and forgiveness of oneself and hope for a better future. The author captures your attention from the start and holds you spellbound until the end. This is most assuredly a must read! Thank you so much Emmanuel for such a magnificent, captivating story.
Loved Magnus and Modwen
Magnus has been going through the motions of life since the death of his beloved wife at the hands of berserker a decade ago. His Jurl, need his skills at the forge for their new colony and orders him to take a wife.
Modwon husband had been their villages blacksmith. Widowed with a young son and daughter, she is to be married off to the Jurl’s blacksmith. Her new husband wants nothing to do with her. She doesn’t stop trying to be a good wife.
Marcus sees his attraction to his new wife as a betrayal. When she is in danger her realizes what she means to him.
Part of a multi author series, it reads ok as a stand alone. Fast paced a little steamy. A nice epilogue to wrap up their story.
Not over the death of his wife, Magnus accepts the marriage to Modwen, but he won’t consummate it; or will he?! I read this novella as part of the Vikings anthology. Kudos to Ms. De Maupassant, and the other authors for taking their readers into other worlds. To the heart-aches, the healing, the steamy interactions of their characters. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every book I’ve read by this author!
They are good people who can manage this…
At first Magnus cannot look beyond his own grief to see that he has more to do for the smith’s widow than he has so far delivered. Modwen needs a husband’s love and support, not just his income at the forge, to hold off the creepy brother of her dead husband. Step by step this miracle can happen; he can let his fixation on the past withdraw from him and the gentle weaver’s womanly virtues grow upon him, the two youngsters blossom in his care, until true danger forces both their hands.
Emmanuelle brings things to a climax at a realistic and yet absorbing pace, exemplary use of the hurt/comfort theme.

This book had me from the first page. Modwen was married to Magnus as part of the deal that was made. Magnus didn’t want a new wife as he was still grieving for his first wife who had been murdered.
I read this on one go, I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed it and it is a stand-alone but is better read as a series.
A good book from a good author who always manages to engage the emotions of the reader with her wonderful characters and depictions of time in an era long since gone! Magnus is still grieving the loss of his wife a number of years past and carries a lot of guilt over what he perceives as his cause in her death. Modwen, who also lost her spouse knows that she is required to marry again and is determined to be a good wife if only Magnus will allow her to. This book is as much about forgiving oneself, and finding new love as it is about the way of life for the Vikings so long ago.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
In this next match from the anthology, Magnus, a blacksmith, and Modwen are wed. Modwen’s deceased husband had been the prior blacksmith. His uncle was a little weasel and wanted Modwen for himself. Magnus had lost his own wife to the vicious attacks of the berserkers and did not want another wife or to love again. However, he does his duty to provide for Modwen and her two children, but physically wants nothing to do with Modwen, to her bewilderment. This is a bittersweet love story that is very well-written and packs quite a punch for such a short story. It is a steamy, emotional read filled with tears of sorrow blending into tears of joy. I hated to see it end.
Another good read in the Viking Saga. Though still grieving for his wife, Magnus is ordered to rewed. He tries to avoid his new wife, but life and fate gets in the way. I received an ARC of this book.
Magnus lives in a Pict village, his wife was killed, and he has much guilt about this,he is ordered by his Jarl to remarry, but he doesn’t want to. He agreed to marry Modern but avoids her as much as possible, she tries to be a good wife but Magnus makes it very hard. when danger happens, will be protected her. This is the fifth book in a series, and was very interesting to read, enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters of the story. Also people from other stories in the series, who also live in the village.I received this ebook as a ARC from Bookfunell, for a honest review.I think anyone who busy this ebook will enjoy very much. I plan on reading all the books in series. I enjoyed this book so much I listened to the audio version also, it has two narrative in it,which adds A lot to story. I recommend the audio version or the written version, both are excellent.
