**SPOILER ALERT
This story was short but well developed! Magnus has lost his first wife, his first love. In order to strengthen the bonds with Achnaryrie, the Norsemen must choose new wives to strengthen the bond between the two communities. Magnus is wedded to Modwen, but he is determined to ignore her. He can’t give up his memories of his first wife, Solveig. However, there is a very threatening person who desires to claim Modwen, and she must fight his amorous advances. I was not sure what to expect from this author but was very pleased with her character building and her marvelous storytelling and would read from this author again
Modwen, a recent widow, is commanded by her Jarl to marry Magnus, a widower who blames himself for his wife’s death. She wants to be a good wife. He fears that Modwen represents a temptation to betray his late wife.
That’s a pretty complex setup; not many authors could pull off a wonderful novel from that starting point. Fear not, because Emmanuelle succeeded admirably. The plot is well thought out, the characters are developed complexly and grow quite a bit during the story, and the dialogs are most satisfying. There is some very appropriate sizzle and steam that helps develop the characters and their story.
The Viking Surrender series is a multiple-author effort and I believe that this volume is the best one of the series. A prequel to this volume is available from Amazon for free and makes the story stand alone well for readers jumping into this volume without reading prior volumes.

Magnus: a Viking Warrior Romance (Viking Surrender Book 5) oh my word!! A fantastic addition to the Viking Surrender series. This one is of the broken hearted, Magnus Thorensson and the soft spoken widow Modwen. Can she help heal his heart and can he be the husband she craves. I definitely recommend this book and author. I highly recommend this series to you. One click it ASAP!!

This is a terrific book! The characters are well-drawn and interesting. They’re very three-dimensional and really make the story come alive. The plot has lots of little details that catch your attention and keep it focused on the story. So much so, that I hit the last page before I realized it! I can recommend it to anyone who loves a good book.

This talented author has written a splendid Viking romance with an “enemies to lovers” undertones & it is the 5th book in the “Viking” series. I found the plot quite intriguing & well-written with good world building & scene descriptions. The characters are strong-willed & have complex personalities with realistic flaws that are motivated by unwanted circumstances and/or contemplation of the past events.
There is: a viking blacksmith (Magnus) with guilty memories of his wife’s murder is ordered by his Jarl (Brandr) to marry a widow (Modwen) with two children & tries to avoid her while he battles to accept his new life, a manipulative uncle (Fecir), hot Viking warriors/raiders, Pict women, some twists, intrigue, suspense, drama, adventure, action, danger, threats, attacks, violence, reluctance, resentment, memories, contemplation, rejection, regrets, anguish, humiliation, confrontations, death, punishment, decisions, determination, seduction, some steam, love, contentment & a satisfying ending.
Book five in the Viking Surrender series, I know when this series is finished I want to sit down and read them all together. Valiant warrior Magnus is a widower who had no plans of marring again after his wife was murdered, but he has been commanded to do so. Modwenis the woman he has been told to wed.I enjoyed reading this story.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Love each and everyone of these books in this series. Mangus is required to marry as part of the bargain and he is determined to avoid his new wife. His first wife was murdered over ten years and he still mourns her. Modwen, who husband died two years earlier, has two children to raise and hesitantly agrees to the marriage. As times goes by and events happen that draw them together, love is found but it does take awhile. There is a lot of action in this book with some of it a heart wrenching, it is a great read and a great addition to the series. I would highly recommend this book.
Even though I’ve read this entire series, each story can be read as a standalone. The reader gets plenty of information as to the backstory. Magnus and Modwen are 1 of my favorite couples. They are both older characters, both have loved and lost their first mates, and each handle that loss differently. Modwen wants a future for her children and herself. Magnus is stuck in the past. Even though his Jarl insists he marry her, Magnus keeps to himself, sleeps and eats in the forge, because he doesn’t feel he deserves happiness again. As this fast paced read moves along through trials and challenges, these two grow together in a really natural way. I loved this book, I really love this whole series. Do yourself a favor, binge read these books, you’ll love them.
I recieved an ARC from Booksprout and this is my honest review.
Flawless as we’ve come to expect from this amazing author who delivers the most compelling reads…
Oh my, a fabulously crafted story, Emmanuelle de Maupassant writes with such passion & it shines through in her characters as well, both in the bedroom, (sexy as sin!) but also in the very fibre of their being. Their history is rich & spellbinding. The care the Vikings consistently deliver to their women, their high work ethic, their respect for the larger community weaves a magic tale but take care, they are also renowned for their brutality. It was both raw & tender & I cannot recommend it highly enough. I received an arc & this is my honest & voluntary review.
This story is so sweet and caring. I loved every minute of reading this short story. Magnus is hurting and being forced into a marriage he did not want – who could object to his frustration. Over time he eventually comes to realize that maybe he can make a marriage with Modwen and that it is something he could make work. I love their interactions and the understanding of each other and the maturity that comes with second marriages. My only wish, I wish it were longer.
I received a complimentary copy from the author.
Incredibly fascinating and STEAMY historical romance. GREAT entertainment, a MUST-READ!
MAGNUS is the fifth book in the Viking Surrender series, and I have to say this series has captured both my mind and my heart. With each book written by a different author, the stories within this series are varied and as fascinating as the last one. With one exception, MAGNUS like all of the stories which make up this VIKING SURRENDER series take place in the same Pict village. And all of the women within this village, many of whom are widows, agree to marry one of the men in the group of Vikings who the surviving women expect have arrived to conquer and pillage their war-torn village. Agreeing with the plan, the men and women who are to marry, do so right away, and the rest of each Viking’s story is written in a book from this series. MAGNUS, like all of the others, is well written, descriptive and STEAMY. The obvious chemistry between Modwin and Magnus is unexpected and does much to help Magnus who is fighting the relationship part of this marriage to which he agreed. Despite the attitude adjustment, trials, and personal failures author de Maupassant has ROCKED the story of Magnus and Modwin. MAGNUS has all of the feels that romance readers look for before purchasing their next romance purchase, with suspense and page-turning action to boot! I voluntarily read an early copy of MAGNUS and this is my HONEST and VOLUNTARY 5-STAR review! Purchase your copy today.
Oooooooooh!!! I looooooved Magnus and Modwen. I felt that Emmanuelle de Maupassant poured so much angst and feeling into this novella. Magnus was the perfectly moody broody hero… and Modwen was totally what he needed to heal his heart. I was a little worried because they didn’t have that much words exchange between them, but it all worked out.
This was fantastic when I read it the first time as part of the Vikings anthology. But I fell in love with the story AGAIN when I re-read it separately. That bonus epilogue had me freaken bawling!! Honestly, Magnus and Modwen gave me all the wonderful feels. This novella has my heart, y’all!! Loved it!!

This was a quick read for me this afternoon and I was so happy that Magnus got his second chance at love, as well as Modwen. My heart ached for Magnus, still feeling so guilty after all the years since his wife had been killed. He’s vowed never to marry or love again but he soon finds himself wed to Modwen, a widow with two children. At first, he wants nothing to do with her, even after she’s shown him that she’s willing to consummate their marriage. As they get to know each other, even with the language barrier and different customs, the ice around his heart shatters and he realizes that he does indeed deserve Modwen’s love.

When a group of Vikings seek shelter on the coast of Scotland they find a village that is struggling to survive. Most of the men have been killed or wounded from attacks by neighbouring tribes. The Vikings decide that some of their men will stay, marry some of the women & help restore the village. Magnus is a blacksmith & weds Modwen widow of the village’s blacksmith. Magnus is still tortured by brutal memories of his wife’s murder & struggles to move forward.
A well written very well paced book that I read in one sitting. The characters have depth & most are very likeable. Magnus & Modwen struggle with their marriage but as time passes they both begin to move forward. Magnus is forced to reassess his feelings & actions when Modwen is threatened & it’s a turning point in their relationship. Whilst the Vikings could be ruthless the story also showed a different side with their strict laws & loyalty. I thoroughly enjoyed rereading this lovely story & the epilogue rounded the story beautifully
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

My review :
Will a man still longing for what he has lost, be able to see his future lays on someone new’s hands…
I feared at first as I haven’t read any book in this series I might be lost, why I wondered if it was right to review it, if it would affect my rating but I so loved Mrs Emmanuelle de Maupassant’s novella in the amazing Once Upon A Christmas Wedding anthology, I decided to not let pass this short read.
And hopefully I did.
Firstly, to not get lost, I had to download the prologue which is free on amazon :

After it is up to any reader to decide which tale to read.
Magnus still bears so much guilt for his late wife’s death, he was never really able to let her go.
Why he is angry to have to marry again and while following his Jarl’s orders, he will have nothing to do with this bride he was coerced to take.
Yet, she reawakens desires he thought buried with his first wife. And he will have to face a near failing to realize his new wife needs him much more than the one in the ground.
Modwen has accepted her village’s demand, and she will be a good spouse, if only her new husband would return the favor.
Whatever she does, he avoids her, evading her presence.
But when danger lurks in the corner, will he be the protector he is meant to be?
The heroes in this novella are awesome characters, they must do with what life throws on their path, but when Magnus lives with anger and regrets in his heart, Modwen has hope, hope for a better life.
And like many stubborn persons, it will be by smashing his skull to bits, that Magnus will be able to see what was in front of him all along.
A lovely tale of optimism with such a moving epilogue.
5 stars
