Thor’s hammer is missing again. The thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon–the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn’t just lost. It has fallen into enemy hands. If Magnus Chase and his friends can’t retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. … Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer’s return is the gods’ worst enemy, Loki–and the price he wants is very high.

I really liked how adventurous it was but made it relatable to real world problems we are facing today and Magnus’s comments are hilarious along with jack the sword of the summer’s comments
Magnus Chase is an endearing character and I’m happy to spend time with him. His crew expands to include Alex in this book and s/he is intriguing. Following which Norse god is which has been very uphill work for me; I haven’t read up on them since i was about 13, although I’ve read MUCH more about Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods. New quest, lots of trials navigated but we’re still not sure where it is leading us.
By the end of the book, we know what the next step will be, and I’m very much interested in the next book. I found the first book in this series…not so compelling as the Percy Jackson books but now I’m more invested in the series and anxious to continue on!
In the second adventure of Magnus Chase series, the fate of the 9 worlds depends on a misfit band of Norse supernaturals…again… Together they take on another impossible mission to stop Loki from triggering Ragnarock, which is pretty much the end of the universe.
Riordan has done a good job of creating character diversity and challenging traditional stereotypes. Magnus Chase himself was a homeless teenager, his friend Samira is a middle eastern Valkyrie, Hearthstone is a deaf and mute elf, Blitzen the dwarf would rather sew fine clothes than blacksmith and craft like his kinsmen, and a new character named Alex identifies as gender fluid.
The story itself is totally original and unlike anything I’ve ever read. The series makes fun of the Norse gods and makes them just plain weird. Even with the teenage humor, it is obvious a lot of research went into creating the world of Magnus Chase. There are a lot of Norse characters and lore that I had not heard of which is refreshing in the age of Marvel’s superheroes (hunky Thor and company).
This is definitely a high school & young-adult fantasy series. As I stated in my review of the first book, Sword of Summer, I may have liked this more if I was a teenager. As always, happy reading!
alex is introduced!!
Genuinely one of the best books I’ve read!!! I absolutely love this series, and the only bad thing about it is that there’s only THREE books. I need more of these awesome character please!
I enjoyed the addition of Alex to the team.
The old myths took on a fresh spin in this one – even about the dwarf and his treasure.
As always, Hearth is my favourite.
I do wonder a lot about what’s really going on with Randolph and how Loki’s magic works.
A LOL funny book. I’m not planning to go bowling any time soon…
Can’t wait for book 3.
i think it was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It really gives a twist to everything I know about Norse Mythology
I thought it was a great book, mostly because of the fact it’s from my favorite author but I also liked that they added new characters and it was kinda funny
I could not stop reading.
The best book in the world!!!!!!!!!!
Love it
Thor the Blond Useless Thunder God. He Drinks, Farts and Loses his Hammer All the Time. Magnus go Fetch My Hammer. Loki also plays a role in this book as Usual. Given a Mission the Group Must Find the Missing Hammer, Save the Day and prevent Loki from getting free. Well 1 out of 3 ain’t bad. As I said Thor is the Useless Blond Thunder Dolt.
