Well written story with some entertaining ideas. Enjoyed the New Orleans setting and the stuff about magic and witches. The story was just a bit too slow and nothing really wowed me. Sweet romance between Miri and Phillip. Miri finds herself moved within a couple hours after her mom announces they’ll all be moving in with her boyfriend. Miri and her siblings are less than thrilled; especially when people in their new neighborhood treat them poorly, and their mom’s boyfriend seems to be a bit shady. Miri is also worried about some surprising information surrounding her family and witches, and about her brother; something is definitely amiss with him, so she makes plans to find out what is up. Along for the ride is Phillip; a guy at her new school that she feels a connection with. Miri finds herself on an interesting adventure that could prove quite dangerous. I’d say 3.5 rating for this story, but I rounded up since the writing is good. Overall, interesting elements, but a bit too YA for me and a bit too much of the same thing going on for too long in the story.
I enjoyed this story and it’s magical elements. I did get a tad annoyed with Miri’s naivete and lack of common sense at times but overall I like how her character grew through out the story. I look forward to more in this series & from this author
Good YA Story, but I will say the beginning was slow. I really was not getting into the book, until about half way in. Mira lives with her grandma, sister, brother and mom. One day her mother says they are leaving grandma’s and going to live with her boyfriend Caleb. Not everything seems as it is. What secrets are being kept from her? Why is her brother Mike always taking off? What is this with Bella, is she magical? Why is Miri not magical like her sister and brother seem to be? Why did their grandma not want them to move out? Why is she having nightmares? Can Phillip her new friend help her?

Fabulous! I’m a sucker for paranormal books set in Louisiana, especially involving witchcraft. Ms. Kristi started this series off very well. I only wish the story moved a bit faster but I also understand why it didn’t. I can’t wait to see how Mirri’s powers will grow.

This is good beginning to a promising new series. There is great character development, engaging characters and a good plot with plenty of twists. There a few gaps in the storyline that I think would do good with a bit of tidying up. But, overall a fun story that’s off to a good start.

Well. written story, fast paced with mystery, magic, action and a hint of romance. Miri is the main character though we get to know the rest of the family quite well. Great setting in New Orleans, always conjures up magic and the supernatural in one’s mind. Looking forward to the next chapter in this adventure.

The story seems to set in the ’90s, in New Orleans. Miri is living with her family in grandma’s house. Even though she sleeps with her sister in a bunk bed and tiny bedroom, life is never been better. Until their mother drags them to the new home of her newest boyfriend, in the French Quarter. Unbeknownst to her, the magical community is plotting a plan to get rid of her because they fear her powerful magic. Miri had a rude awakening of who she really is, when she encounters evil red head girl. Luckily a local hero saves her from dangers, but she gained more questions then answers. Do witches and vampires really exist? Does magic exist? And what is going on with her brother?
I like that the story is set in New Orleans, that lends a hand in the mysterious things that is going on and happen in Miri’s life. It is full of mystery, danger and adventure with a pinch of romance and magic. Again, a female character lead that has potential for something greater, but if she really wants it, that is another question. In here, you submerge yourself in the paranormal, the strangeness of New Orleans and hidden history that can make you or break you. Very entertaining and at times very suspenseful, will she give in to the voice in her head?
Well written paranormal with great characters and storyline. An adventure that will keep you turning pages. I really enjoyed this read from start to end with the mystery, drama, magic, suspense, witches and vampires. A wonderful start for a series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in this new series. Miri, her sister Belle and her brother Michael, have always been told by their grandmother that they come from a bloodline of strong witches. Her mother claimed that it was all nonsense. Eventually her mother took them and moved in with her boyfriend, Caleb. That meant a new area, a new school, a new everything. The only saving grace was Miri found herself a lovely guy who was now her boyfriend. Caleb tried to control everyone, behaving as if he were their father. The whole situation ends badly, but their mother still can’t see that Caleb is to blame. What hold does he have over their mother? It was something they would need to find out and get her out from his control.
This book was a good read, you know the saying curiosity killed the cat, well Miri better watch herself because her curiosity keeps getting her into trouble. I only gave four stars because you only get tidbits about her family and not enough to know why things are happening. There are still questions at the end. Maybe in the next book you will learn more. I would recommend this book as the story gets your attention and keeps it.

A great start to a new series! The first book is the new Gifted Girls Series gives the reader all they could hope for. Each time I start a new series it is with the thrill of something new and different. Of course, it has been said there are no stories and, to an extent, it is true; however, as with the musical scale the elements can be shifted into unique combinations. I feel that Magical Miri manages to do just that. I like to keep my reviews as spoiler-free as possible; however, as has been stated elsewhere the titular character has grown up in New Orleans with her grandmother, mother, and siblings. Suddenly the mother decides to move away from the familiar and the result is a story with a great plot, great characters, and a well-developed world. I recommend the book. I received an ARC of the book and I not only wanted to leave a review but also bought a copy.
I loved so much about this book! The characters are well written. The story moves at a fast pace and keeps you wanting to see what happens next. The high school romance is sweet and G rated. Once I started it I didn’t want to put it down. Miri is not the typical main character, quite refreshing! I loved the hints of the underside in New Orleans, the relationship with her Grandma, the mystery of Michael, and her relationship with Philip. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

The first book in an extremely promising series! Wow with everything from witches to vampires to strange happenings, combined with denials, a dysfunctional family dynamic and you have the beginnings of a storyline that only makes you go WOW! Miri, her sister Belle, her brother Michael and their mother all live with their grandmother, who hints at magic and bloodline much to the annoyance of Miri’s mother, so much so one day she comes home from work and tells the girls to pack their things, they’re moving out of grandma’s house to Caleb’s house, their mom’s boyfriend. That means a new school, new friends, new location and to boot the house is so close to being in the French Quarter where grandma kept telling the kids to make sure they don’t go in there it is too dangerous to them because of their bloodline. Caleb’s house isn’t too bad we each got our own room at least. But there was something off about Caleb, Miri couldn’t put her finger on it and then there is Michael who can’t stand Caleb and stays out as much as possible to the point that Miri thinks something is wrong with him and is concerned. When Miri decides to sneak out and walk through the French Quarter and gets into trouble with witches and vampires although Miri believes they are all faking. When she gets rescued by Phillip a boy she saw in school, she still was not convinced of the “witches” and “vampires” were real. With Phillip now being her protector while he shows her around, she enlists him to help find out what her brother is doing. Things go from bad to worse and strange events are happening even in her home. She needs her grandma to help explain things – to help her find her true self. Her mother told her that her father left the family before her sister Belle was born, but why? So many questions plague Miri and her most curious mind. Wow, I just can’t wait to see what happens next! A must read! I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I really liked this book it was such a captivating read. I was sucked in from page 1 onward! I think I read this book in the span of 3 days in between my busy schedule. Im keeping this a little vague to avoid spoilers, but really y’all should give it a shot!

High School can be tough. Changes like moving and leaving close family ties only complicate things. Rumors of magic in your family bloodlines when you live in New Orleans can make your wonder, and weird occurrences can make you question what to trust.

Magical Miri is a novel written by Debra Kristi and the first of the Gifted Girl series.
When I first saw the cover of this book, something told me that I had a pressing need to read it, and boy was it right. It may have been the cover that initially hooked me, but it was Miri’s story that kept me hooked and reeled me in all the way to the last page.
The story follows Mirabelle who from initial appearances is just a normal girl living with her grandmother, mom, younger sister, and older brother. Miri has grown up with stories of her family coming from a powerful line of witches, but she has never witnessed anything magical. Her mother hates her grandmother even mentioning anything about witches or magic.
Almost immediately the family dynamic set up in the first chapter is shattered by the mother who moves herself and the kids in with her boyfriend, Caleb under the guise of wanting to make a stronger family. I didn’t like Caleb from the first page he was mentioned. Maybe it was me projecting my own upbringing from a home in which one parent was gone, but he just rubbed me the wrong way. I would be proven right later in the book, but I was in lockstep with Miri’s distrust of him.
Miri was closest to her sister, Belle and her big brother, Michael and through the book experiences strange occurrences she cannot explain. She tries to deny the nature of the occurrences but eventually comes to accept that not only are they magic, but that she has the ability to wield such powers too.
Miri’s constant companion through the book is her new boyfriend Phillip who literally worships the ground she walks on. At first, he humors her by going along with her seemingly crazy schemes and helping her out of a few jams she got herself into. The two come to genuinely care for each other, much to the consternation of Caleb, who hates Phillip because of who his father is.
At the end of the book, a new normal; is established. Belle goes with their mother to help her recover from whatever Caleb did to her, Michael stays with the group teaching him to use his own powers, and Miri returns to live with her grandmother to learn how to control her powers.
I really enjoyed how Kristi described the various powers at work in New Orleans, and how each of them had their own plans for Miri and what she was capable of. You can tell that Kristi really did her homework on witchcraft. As a former Wiccan myself, it excited me to read someone who took the time to handle the subject with the respect it deserves.
I loved this book and I want to read the rest of the books in the series now.

Books involving magic are usually quite similar to one another. This one is a lot different than any other magical themed books I’ve read. I did enjoy this book, and it did keep my attention. I found the beginning and middle not very exciting. It told a story, as it should and it kept me wanting to read, which says a lot. It’s not that it was boring, it was uneventful… but I liked it that way because the last few chapters were jam packed with tying up loose ends and was more eventful. There were a few gasps and heart pounds, to say the least. I’m not sure how much I enjoyed the vampics. I like vampires but it kind of seemed just thrown in there for no reason. I suppose that is why this is a book series and not just one book. All in all, I do look forward to following Belles story next and I would recommend this to anyone who reads YA and likes stories about witches.
Why is Miri all of a sudden seeing ghosts and having nightmares. Miri has always felt kind of the odd one in her family. Her father left when she was little and she doesn’t really remember him. There is a mystery why he left. Since then she, her older brother, younger sister, and mom have lived with her grandmother, who says their family has magic. But neither her mom nor her or her siblings have magic. Or do they? When her mom forces them into moving in with her boyfriend Caleb in the French Quarter strange thinks start happening. Something is wrong with her brother, she swears she saw her little sister move objects, and her mom’s boyfriend is acting strange and lying about his whereabouts. Wow I read this in just one sitting! From the very first chapter I was intrigued by Miri and her mothers sudden decision to uproot and move everyone ignoring grandma who we all know you should never ignore!!! There’s secrets, mystery, intrigue and magic, vampires and witches, familiars, action and even a little romance making this a captivating start to this series and I cannot wait to read more! Love the storyline, love most of the characters!!! And I loved the fact it was based in New Orleans!
*minor spoilers* Miri has lived with her grandmother, mother, brother, and sister in New Orleans for almost her entire life. When her mother gets a boyfriend and moves them into the French Quarter, Miri finds out she’s not just a typical teenager.
Debra Kristi keeps you on the edge of your seat while exploring Miri’s past and present. Kristi skillfully works in descriptions of the French Quarter with Miri’s background. And leaves you guessing until close to the end.
Each of the characters; Miri, her mother, her brother, her sister (Belle), the new boyfriend, and a new friend for Miri are interesting and rounded out nicely. Although more time is spent on Miri, the other characters still add to an intriguing story.
All in all, I’m looking forward to more from Ms. Kristi.
