This is a good continuation of the series, it moves the story forward on multiple levels. I have always been very annoyed when books in a series just mark time with no purpose but this is not the case for this novel. New bad guys are introduced (and dealt with) the main characters experience life changing events and the relationship of the Curran and Kate gets interesting. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
OMG, I could not put it down. Could not turn the pages fast enough. So many unexpected twists!!!!!
When Derek is discovered nearly dead, Kate is determined to bring down the assailants. Her investigations lead her to the Midnight Games, a deadly fighting tournament, where she has to work with the Pack, and Curran, to stop a dark plot.
“I gave him a smile. I was aiming for sweet, but he turned a shade paler and scooted a bit farther from me. Note to self: work more on sweet and less on psycho-killer.”
Since it’s been years since I have read this series, it’s like I am reading this for the first time. I didn’t remember anything about this book except the deal Kate made with Curran for a date. Kate is just as badass as I remember her being. I can’t get enough of the tension between her and Curran.
“Despite all his growling and threats, his arrogance, I liked being next to him. He made me feel safe. It was a bizarre emotion. I was never safe.”
Curran finally starts getting more aggressive in his pursuit of Kate in this book. The tension between these two, especially after Kate lost the bet and has to cook him dinner now! I can’t wait to read that scene in the next book because I know it is going to be steamy!
This book was nonstop action from the beginning. So much is going on but it is all so fascinating I didn’t want to put the book down. I love that we are seeing more of Andrea, Derek, and Jim because they are my favorite side characters from the first two books. I really enjoyed seeing them work together to bring down their enemies. It was intense, bloody, and badass!
As I said, I am loving this world and can’t put the books down. I am immediately jumping into the next book because I can’t wait to find out what craziness is going to happen next.
Kate’s new exercise in chaos for the week is dabbling in blood sport! In a borderline illegal gladiator style fighting tournament, the prize is a giant topaz that apparently keeps shape shifters from shifting or healing. So naturally this appeals to Roland, the big bad sociopath that Kate has been training her whole life to take down. He hires a team of monsters to compete in the games and win the gem, and while they are at it disrupt and injure as many shifters as they can. Competing in the games is illegal to the Pack. Lying to Curran is illegal to the Pack. Letting Derrick float in a pool of green goo until he snaps and goes loup (rabid) without having Curran on hand to put him down is illegal. Luckily Kate has her boss’s blessing to be hip deep in this mess! Unfortunately, Curran has decided that Kate is his mate without having any clue who’s daughter she is. I think this is the book where the whole series turns the corner. Everybody lays their cards on the table, and then you get left in horrible anticipation for the reactions in the next book. Cliffhangers man!! Happy Reading!
Love all the Ilona Andrews work.
Exciting series
i’ve discovered that ilona andrews is worth buying. i have alll of the books in several series. anyway, this series is about the return of magic to the world. and it hasn’t returned gently, but with a catastrophic “bang”, so how do we handle it? this is how. one of a series with shape shifters, witches, guns and magic. only fantasy, no sci fi, but, wow! what fantasy! and there is love. if you liked the original beauty and the brast series, you should be a fan. but there is more. can you tell i’m enamored of these books? yes. read. then go get the rest
I have read the whole series and have loved all of them. I strongly recommend the all books be read in order they were written and published. I loved all the players in the books. I love the world created and the main characters relationship with her father and the many other great characters. Great series. Read them all from the beginning.
Love all of the Kate Daniels books, have them all and have read them three times. Can’t wait for the next Hugh book. When you open the book it’s like Ready, Set , Go and you don’t want to put it down
The Ilona Andrews team never disappoints!
More insights into the people in the Kate Daniels world and more clues to Kate’s mysterious past and powers. We get a steamy hot tub scene, arena combat, magic and swords, sneaking, and scheming. Great point in the series.
Another great Kate book!
Quite simply put, one of my favourite writers (or two, I should say, as they make a wonderful team!). The world-building is amazing, the characters brought to life so that they become a part of yours, and to top it off it’s funny and witty, you just can’t put it down.
Kate Daniels great series
I have all their books and this one is as good as any of the others.
I love this series. Excellent writing.
I just finished reading this book again for the umpteenth time and I love it as much now as I did when I read it for the first time! I was up until 1:11 AM this morning reading it because I just couldn’t put it down – that’s how good it is! I love Kate Daniels because she’s tough when she has to be and yet, she’s achingly lonely. She’s willing to die for the people she can’t help but care about and yet, she wonders what it would be like to have someone she can really trust in her life to come home to. Kate’s entire life, from the time she could walk, has been spent training for one purpose and we get a glimpse into what the training was like in this book. Kate becomes more multi-dimensional with each book in the series. The world building is phenomenal and all the characters, whether primary or secondary, just leap off the page because the imagery is so vivid and alive. Kate stretches herself to the breaking point in this book, shaking hands with Death and is snatched away from Death at the last moment. The explosive chemistry between Kate and Curran finally comes to a head in this book and it’s just as hot as you could hope for and touching at the same time. There aren’t enough superlatives to use to rave about these books. I sincerely recommend them to everyone who loves urban fantasy with a strong, female protagonist.
I found this futuristic look at an apolitical world believable & fascinating. The dialogue between the heroine & the hero is very clever & at times laugh out loud funny. I enjoyed all the various preternatural creatures involved as well as the plots twists changed every time magic & tech shifted. I greatly enjoy everything this husband & wife writing team produce. This another example of very intelligent & believable writing.
Audiobook: Narrator – Renee Raudman
I’m starting to adjust to this narrator and in doing so, I’ve found that her voice for Curran or other male characters does not grate on me as they did in the first book. There are still a few times I cringe, but overall I’m beginning to enjoy the way she performs this book. The action sequences are truly amazing as she pumps some serious emotion into her voice.
It’s official, I’m definitely being pulled into this series! I had some technical difficulties with my listening device after I started this one so I had to put it aside and hated every minute of not being able to listen. When I was able to get back to it, I started from the beginning again and holy heck! This book, series, world is completely captivating!
This has so many twists and turns and all kinds of unexpected surprises. I’m settling into knowing this world and recognizing the words which is more difficult with an audio. But it’s getting easier to do and that’s making it all the better to enjoy.
I loved that we finally get Kate’s background and I have to say, I’m worried for the girl. Along the way, we also get more about Curran and then we just get more OF Curran. I’m not complaining about any of it.
Once more this is filled with action, drama, danger and angst that will have you biting your nails.
