In this novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series, war-plagued Atlanta has never been so deadly…Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job. Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought … more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name. Plus, many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.
So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. But it turns out that this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her may pay the ultimate price…

Magic Slays – Ilona Andrews – Kate vs. the magic hating equivalent of the KKK. Yeah this is a strange one. The whole book is trying to answer the question: If I can do the impossible, level cities, change fate, end the status quo, should I? I had the Moana song “How Far I’ll Go” stuck in my head because all these characters are willing to cross the line for the people they love. And Kate’s crazy family just gets better and better! Someone give her the day off to just process her trauma! As always, I’m grateful my day at the office is going better than Kate’s! Happy Reading!
You can NEVER go wrong with any Ilona Andrews book — yep, that is my experience.
I LOVE this series. Kate Daniels and friends are well developed. Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite authors. I own most of the books in this series and the other series.
Love this entire series
This is one of my all time favorite series!
The Kate Daniel’s story continues at a breakneck speed. As usual for this series the action starts in the first few pages and just increases from there. I love that the Kate and Curran relationship develops and Julie moves more into the central story as opposed to being a support character who is occasionally called on to provide support to the action. As usual the book was fantastic and I am going to read the novella that follows it and then the next book. Ilona Andrews has a rabid fan that is happily moving though her backlist.
Kate Daniels has opened her own business but hasn’t had any clients yet. But her first job turns out to be a lot more dangerous than she ever expected and everyone is in danger. Now it’s a race against the clock to stop the enemies and save Atlanta.
This is the fifth book in the series and it was amazing! This series gets better with every book. I was addicted from the very beginning and couldn’t put the book down until it was finished. Kate is struggling to get her business off the ground. She has the experience but her former boss has tarnished her reputation making her clientless. This first job for Cutting Edge Investigation turns out to be a lot more dangerous than she planned.
As with all the books in this series, this was nonstop action and suspense, with some romance in between. I really enjoyed the Kate and Curran interactions in this one. They have only been mated for a little while and still are working out the kinks in their relationship. But they are working them out and becoming a very strong couple. Also I love how much chemistry these two have!
“If I fought for them and was crippled, they would all say nice things, and then they would replace me and forget I was ever there. You would stay with me. You would take care of me, because you love me. I love you too, Kate. If you ever became hurt, I would not leave you. I’ll be there. Wherever you want ‘there’ to be.” – Curran
In this book we also learn more about Kate’s family and what they can do. The confrontation between Kate and Roland just keeps getting closer with every book, but first she has to deal with Hugh. We also have some changes with Julie in this book and it was intense. I was expecting a confrontation between Andrea and Raphael but I assume that will be in the next book.
I love this book! I know I can always count on Ilona Andrews to create a wonderful world that will make me forget about everything going on in the world.
So much happens in this book, I’m not sure where to begin. Kate is no longer employed by the Order. She quit in order to try to save members of the Pack. Curran, via the Pack, gives Kate her own business, which she names Cutting Edge, and she specializes in magical hazmat cleanup. Kate is also now living at the Keep with Curran as his mate. She is called the Consort. We find out why and where Andrea disappeared to at the end of Magic Bleeds. She becomes Kate’s 1st employee. Julie runs away from school and is tracked back to Atlanta by the Pack. Ascanio, a young Bouda male, is introduced to the storyline. He becomes Kate’s intern at the request of Aunt B. Derek becomes Kate’s 2nd employee when he quits as the head of Curran’s private security because he wants to learn more about investigating. The heart of the story is about a group of people who see anyone with magic as a threat, regardless of whether that person is human or shifter. There are some very timely things in this book, given what’s going on in this world today. Dr. Doolittle explains how dangerous it is to think of people as The Other. These people are so filled with hate that they target children and condition them, like sleeper cell agents. One of those agents is one of the Pack’s renders. Kate, Curran and Pack, along with all the other magic groups in Atlanta, excepting the Order, must join together to battle this foe. During the course of the book, Kate learns some brutal truths about the man who raised her and the woman who gave birth to her. It ripped Kate’s heart out to hear these truths and made her question why Curran really wanted her. He answered that question in the best way possible and cemented his and Kate’s relationship forever. Every person should be so lucky to have a Curran of her or his very own. Another thing that happens is that Julie and Ascanio are attacked by the render I mentioned before. Terrible things happened to Leslie when she was a little girl, and the “Lighthouse Keepers” used that to turn her against herself and the Pack. In the attack, she bites Julie, who immediately begins to shift. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll say that Kate does something to heal Julie that almost takes Kate into forbidden territory and, afterward, she promises Curran she’ll never do it again. These books continue to get better and better, deeper and deeper, more and more meaningful. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve read these books – I will keep reading them over and over again because I love being in Kate’s world, no matter how messed up it might be.
Outstanding paranormal romance/urban fantasy series.
Audiobook: Narrator – Rene Raudman
What more can I say about this narrator that hasn’t already been said? She’s amazing in her performance of this book/series. Yes, I had to adjust to her in the first book or two but now I can’t imagine anyone else doing the voices as she does. She has literally brought these characters to life for me!
I’m so invested in this series! And holy heck! This book had me on the edge of my seat like none of the previous books. I was frustrated each time I had to set it aside because I needed to know what was going on, and more importantly what Kate was going to do next. It really gives us a lot more of her background, things she didn’t even know. I have to admit my heart hurt for her regarding some of them.
We have a lot more of Kate and Curran time and I absolutely LOVED that! There is also a lot of heartbreak, uncertainty, fear and drama as well. With warnings from book buddies, I worried that the worse that could happen would happen. As the layers peeled back with each step forward I wanted to both shut my eyes/ears to it all and thrust forward as quickly as possible to reach the end.
Like before, as soon as I finished this one I was ready for the next! I need more Kate!
BEST BOOK IN THE WHOLE DAMN SERIES!!!! At this point, Kate has had several significant changes in her life, both professionally and romantically. It’s really, really fun to watch her dance around all the fires and jump through all the hoops and try to come out unscathed. She such a solid character and although completely confident in her ability to kick the best of ass, she’s a little emotionally retarded, much like myself. I think that’s why I love her character so much. She’s got all these people in her life now inspiring various spectrums of emotion and she doesn’t quite know how to handle it all.
For the record, I probably wouldn’t either.
Now, the other reason I say best book in the series is that there are two arcs in this book’s plot that will rip your heart out of your chest, drag it through a pit of white hot coals, stomp on it wearing football cleats and then cram it down your throat. Literally, right up until the LAST SECOND of this book, I thought that something VERY BAD was about to happen. I wont say whether or not something bad happened but I will tell you that I cried. A lot. It took me the better part of a week to get through this audio book because it was a touch too emotional at times. Not in a bad way though.
Magic Slays gets 5 stars from me! This is one of those moments where I wish the Pure Textuality scale went higher than 5 stars because Magic Slays would get it!
Funniest quote ever. Almost fell off my chair laughing. Seriously.
“I know it’s late, but could you find a book for me? It’s called The Slavs: Study of Pagan Tradition by Osvintsev.”
Barabas sighed dramatically. “Kate, you make me despair. Let’s try that again from the top, except this time pretend you are an alpha.”
“I don’t need a lecture. I just need the book.”
“Much better. Little more growl in the voice?”
“Barabas!”
“And we’re there. Congratulations!”
It was totally awesome ,this series just keeps getting better and better.
I loved Kate ,she was totally awesome ,her scenes with Curran are just always so awesome ,I find myself looking through the book to see how long I have to wait until their next scene ,I liked the story and I loved getting to see her use her magic in a different way then she has ever done before ,I loved when Curran was all pissed off because he wanted Kate safe and she just keeps putting herself in harms way to save people ,it’s one of the reason’s he loves her but it totally drives him insane at the same time .
What is there to say about Curran that I haven’t said in my other reviews ,he’s just such an intriguing character and you just want more and more of him ,he’s a total badass ,he’s the perfect match for Kate ,they were made for each other ,I love that he would do anything for Kate, even give up the pack .
I loved getting to see old friends and meeting new ones along the way ,I loved Derek in this book and then getting to meet Ascanio was great ,he’s so funny , I wish they had showed a little more with him .
Overall this book kicked some ass ,the plot was great and the new characters we meet are totally cool,i can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen next with Kate and Curran . This whole series is a must read 🙂
Another great Kate Daniels novel! And once again, our favorite couple saves Atlanta just in the nick of time. I have to be honest about one thing though. While I love almost all of the characters in this series, I don’t really like Julie much. I rarely like some of the kids in the series I read for some reason. Otherwise, awesome!
The whole series is great
