After breaking from the Pack, Kate and Curran are adjusting to their new life. When the Pack offers them the Mercenary Guild, Curran jumps on the opportunity and is determined to make it better than ever. But first they have to deal with ghouls, a missing pack member, and giants.
This is definitely a changing point for the series. Kate and Curran are no on their own and have moved into a suburban neighborhood. We are finally seeing just Curran and Kate not the Beast Lord and Consort. I really like Curran without the politics of the Pack weighing him down. He is happier and has more of an attack first ask questions later kind of person.
I loved Kate. She will always be my favorite but in this one she isn’t so indestructible. She gets beat up pretty badly and it becomes pretty tense for a little bit. It was a bit of a wake up call for her that she isn’t invincible and needs to be more careful, especially since all of Atlanta is relying on her now.
The creatures in this one were very interesting. The ghouls and giants were quite fascinating in this one, as well as the creature creating them. We also have another meeting with her father, who is trying to appear harmless but we know it’s an act. This was just another nonstop, action packed adventure for Kate and Curran.
NI love this sere and the protagonist, Kate.
I’ve read all of the Kate Daniels books twice and they’re each equally fantastic. Love Ilona Andrews books.
Kate and Curran have discovered that living in suburbia comes with its own battles. The mailman is petrified of Curran and there’s that one cranky neighbor who complains about everything they do. Of course, when the monsters follow you home and are ripped apart on the front lawn, it might just push some neighbors over the edge. Despite settling down, Kate and Curran have their work cut out for them. Ghouls are roaming the city in packs and strange reanimating monsters are popping up around town. There’s even a giant or two thrown into the mix. Normal will never be in their lives, but if it were normal then I think the two of them would die of boredom.
Ilona Andrews never fails to create an action-packed story where Kate is constantly pushing past her limitations. I devour each of these books, unable to put them down because they are sheer adrenaline filled action. And don’t forget the sarcastic humor thrown between Curran and Kate that makes it all the more entertaining. They are the only fantasy couple I know that argue over simple household things while covered in blood and fending for their lives. It goes to show just how different their lives are and that they’ve come to accept the constant upheaval as their version of normal.
The mythology surrounding each book in this series is fascinating. Each book brings in another culture and its mythical creatures. There are so many new creatures I have learned about from this series alone. And of course, they have their imagined ones that are based on the culture they are focusing on. And despite the new concepts developed as the series progresses, it never feels like there is too much in the world. Ilona Andrews doesn’t leave loose ends and slowly brings back familiar sights along with the new encounters, weaving them all together to create a whole story.
I don’t want this series to end, but I know at some point it will. And I will rush toward it because I can’t stop reading these books. I highly recommend The Kate Daniels series for fans of urban fantasy.
Have read the entire Kate Daniels series
Great author. Very well written series!
This is a great series. I highly recommend.
I don’t know how Ilona Andrews keeps each book getting better and better. Yet, that is exactly what happens. Again, the is SO much that happens in this book, you almost need a sitemap to keep track of it all. It doesn’t take long for the action to take off and, when it does, it’s almost not-stop to the very end! Talk about a page-turner – WOW!!! This time, Kate and Curran are battling an ancient entity that is entirely too close to Kate’s own type of magic and it almost kills Kate, literally. I was afraid for a while that she was going to be killed off. Fortunately, she wasn’t. There are some moments that made me laugh out loud, cringe, get angry, cry, cheer…I was exhausted by the end of this book, in a really good way. Kate and Curran are two of my all-time favorite characters and it was so much fun to read this book because they spent almost every moment together, working and fighting side by side, to save themselves and others. There was a really interesting plot twist that was thrown in and I loved it. It has to do with Curran and that’s all I’ll say. Because there’s so much that happens, it feels like the book should be a thousand pages long – it’s that good! I recommend this series with every scintilla of my being! Way to go, Ilona Andrews!

Audiobook: Narrator – Renee Raudman
As always, this narrator brings this story and most importantly, these characters to life. I was especially moved by her portrayal of Mitchell and the pure emotion she evoked within me due to her interpretation of his voice and mannerisms in speaking. So much so, I was tearing up. She does a spectacular job and when I’m reading the books, I hear her “Kate” voice in my head.
What an emotionally charged, drama filled, addition to the series! This one left me gasping and teary eyed at times. It was also quite humorous when you consider that Curran is trying to live a “normal” life. Loved all the little secrets that popped up along the way. I’ve become so attached to these characters that they feel a part of my life now and I’m going to miss them when I reach the end. But then again, that’s what rereads and re-listens are for!
Great!
She is a good writer. Her characters are realistic. I find her plots inventive and riveting.
Very predictable tale. I had read the first 2 books in the series and then scooped to this book. Not much has happened. Easy to fill in the blanks.
I love the magic series and find the world the Andrews team has created to be very entertaining — although it’s sure not the Atlanta I know!
It did not move as fast as most of her other booms.
Absolutely love this series!
This is another great book in a great series. Characters and plot very compelling.
The world building is extraordinary! If you like alt universes this one is a real page turner. Magic has come back to our world and is breaking down technology. People are learning that what we thought were fairy tales can and are real. Both scary and exciting.
Kate Daniels is on the case. Curran is defining his role outside the pack. The couple’s dynamic is great. Both are supernatural powerhouses. Favorite series that I have read more than once. Definitely recommend BUT start at book 1.
The Kate Daniels series is one of my favorites, and it never fails to delight, amaze, and enthrall me with it’s mix of action, danger, interaction among dedicated friends, and the deep connection of family. I feel like I’m right in the middle of a real person’s life, with all of its frustrations, pain, determination and love right there for me to experience along with Kate. The little family of Kate, Curran and Julie are now living apart from the pack in their new home, and the interactions with their new neighbors is decidedly amusing, even though Kate doesn’t think so. The story involves an ancient enemy who can only be stopped by Kate and Curran, along with some help from their friends, old and new, which is par for the course. It’s the mystery to be solved the urgency of saving a kidnapped friend and all of the fight scenes that drive the story forward, and of course the authors put our favorite characters through the wringer before the very satisfying conclusion. This is one another one of those stories that I want to read quickly so I find out how it all ends, and then I’m sad because it ended too soon and I have to wait again for a new adventure.
