This four-book set is fantastic purchase, it includes the first book from each of the four acclaimed Fantasy Series by Ron C. Nieto offering a wide overview of the different series and characters.
Each Series has characteristic elements that set them apart from each other, while all of them have in common Nieto’s love for (and broad knowledge of) Mythology in general and Celtic Mythology in particular, paired with an excellent writing style, multidimensional characters, carefully crafted urban fantasy worlds and a always fresh twist on century old myth and legends that keep the reader immersed in the plot and invested in the characters. A veritable gift that will provide some hours of pure bliss and enjoyment.
The Wild Hunt (Faerie Sworn Book 1)
In this version of “The Wild Hunt” we follow Lily Boyd, who sometime ago (for her almost feel as some “lives” ago) wanted to become a faerie doctor, a warden to keep the balance between the human world and faerie, until human pragmatism and the stern intervention of her mother drove faerie away from her life. But faerie has a way to ingratiate itself in the lives of thus “sworn” to it, and thus as Lily grandmother ends up bedridden after breaking her leg, Lily moves back to Scotland to take care of her, a job that somehow overwhelms the sixteen-year-old. Looking for some solace she wanders out in the woods and become acquainted with the Fair Folk.
As Grandma Mackenna (which is in fact a faerie doctor) goes missing, all hell finally breaks loose, as without Mackenna the balance between the human realm and faerie is distorted. The plot develops nicely into a search for Grandma Mackenna that mirrors Lily search for her own destiny.
The characters are likeable and very well written, Mackenna is very enjoyable, the depiction of Lily between willing caring great-daughter and sometimes useless teenager, which should really pay a little more attention, when receiving advice about stay away from the forest, as well as when trying to cook… but is exactly this kind of errant behaviour that gives the character the realness necessary to counterpart an otherwise full magical tale. The faeries are many and diverse, which is much appreciated and showcases the knowledge of Ron C. Nieto on the material and… there are kelpies… what do you don’t know what kelpies are?…. What are you still doing here? Pick up the book and enjoy the tale
Fianna’s Awakening (Warriors of Myth and Legend Book 1)
A very fresh new take on Irish Mythology. The first book “Fianna’s Awakening” follows Aisling as she comes to term with her own destiny as a Fianna, one of the legendary warriors tasked with protecting Ireland from the creatures of Evil. Aisling is just a young student going to the motions of breakup, when she comes into her powers and has a bit of hard time accepting her fate.
As Aisling come across the legendary Spear of Lugh (one of the four mythological relics of the Túatha Dé Danann), she seeks the help of a professor of Celtic studies to verify the authenticity of the artifact. The chemistry between Aisling and Roman is hard to ignore for the very beginning but the slow burning is fun and credible, both characters are equally lovable and the romance well enough dosed as to not distract from the action. The story develops nicely with the right amount of real Celtic mythology interwoven in the action plot of an urban fantasy tale with Dublin and Ireland becoming characters of their own, while Aisling slowly comes to terms with her heritage.
Fall from Grace (Exile of Angels Book 1)
After centuries of imprisonment in Hell – yes, the one and only – the former Archangel of the Secret Knowledge, wishes for not more than a little me-time away from Hell’s misery. And as wishes have a tendency to come true, he finds himself inhabiting the mortal body of Henry Black, but as wishes also have a tendency to be anything other than the expected, live a Henry Black is not exactly the time of bliss our Archangel was hoping for. On one hand, he feels somehow guilty to have been gone away while his brothers and sisters remain in Hell condemned for eternity. On the other hand, humans are not exactly what he has learned them to be and in the middle of everything some undisclosed fraction is hunting angels. Henry Black has all hand full and while he endures his new mortal existence and fights to free his brethren, we rejoice in a tale that is as old as humanity itself, with a fresh new approach to the biblical myth of the fallen angel.
Nieto’s characters are perfectly drawn, Henry Black is a fantastic study in what it really means to be human, and how the supposedly monster ends up being the hero, as century old misconceptions are ripped apart to show another version of the truth. A veritable wonderful timeless story about what atonement really means.
Silent Song (Ghostly Rhapsody Book 1)
Alice, self-appointed Queen B, has keeping a secret that could catapulted her into the deepest pits of High School, his infatuation with Keith, the school outcast, is a sure one-way ticked into the looser. Well, strictly speaking is not so much Keith as his music, what is really keeping Alice in its bane. Thus, when the school play brings both of them together it seems like a heaven given gift, Alice can hang out around Keith and his music with none the wiser. Meanwhile Keith cannot seem to get the melody out of his mind. Unfortunately, they lack vital information, as the melody is in fact part of an old curse, as Keith and Alice friendship grows so does that power of the spell Keith is being put under, and the danger to Alice increases.
This is first and foremost a love tale, about the sacrifices someone is willing to make for love and the consequences of them. Ron C. Nieto characters (both main and secondary) are multidimensional and feel real even when throw down into a very fantastic situation. The writing is impeccable, the choice of secondary plots, such as the High School plays, carefully done to complement the main plot. A beautiful modern take on a Gothic tale.
A must read for every fan of the genre and any reader looking for a fresh take on fantasy.
