Here in his first non-Shannara novel, Terry Brooks has written a gripping story of mystery, magic, and adventure—sure to delight fantasy readers everywhere.Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was in ruin. The … kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.
Ben’s only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow—but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.
To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective Kings of Landover to duel to the death—a duel which no human could hope to win.
The task of proving his right to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn. . . .

I own a copy of this and have lost count of how many times I’ve listened to it. I never get tired of it. If you like fantasy, adventure, and clean romance, this is your book!
Another great series from Terry Brooks! If you are looking for something that is not quite as serious, with insurmountable odds that the stories in the Shannara series triumphantly give the reader, then the Magic Kingdom of Landover is for you. With its quirky characters and a fun sense of humor, it still delivers with the mystical fantasy, …
Terry Brooks is a master of description. You can visualize the fantasy kingdom of Landover and explore it with a unique and humorous cast of characters. It’s got everything you want in a fantasy novel – dragons, witches, and even a bit of love interest. If you’ve never experienced Terry Brooks’s easy and engaging style of writing, do yourself a …
My husband wanted me to read this book and it’s ok. It’s an interesting concept. A lawyer named Ben buys a magic kingdom out of a holiday catalog for $1 million only to find out that the kingdom is falling apart!
Good book but I’m not sure I’ll read the sequels any time soon.

I love this book. Unlike the Shannara books, this is short, light, and filled with humor. The characters are amazingly vivid and varied and the Magic Kingdom is delightful and not at all foreboding. If you spend an afternoon in the Magic Kingdom, you’ll long for a return trip.
Really caught my interest and I read the entire series. Loved the characters, the setting, the story.
This book may have been written over thirty years ago, but it holds up well. Ben Holiday’s crazy adventure after purchasing the throne of a fantasy kingdom, Landover, shows that some things never change, no matter what world you’re in.

This was my favorite book growing up, for lack of better word it was “Magical.” The story telling, the world, the Idea to leave behind our current situation and escape to a whole other world was so fun and entertaining.
This book is an absolute classic that I love to reread occasionally. It really pulls you into the lead character, feeling his struggles, emotions and drive. Then, when you think you have it figured out, the plot twists. What a great series!
I loved this series and have been back several times. Very original
If you like a good fantasy novel that takes your mind to another world then Terry Brooks creates the images and characters to send you their awesome and page turning fantasy novel that will have you up all night great read!!!!!!!
I stumbled on this book years ago in a used book store. The catchy name is what drew me in, and by the end of the first chapter, I was hooked. That first used book store purchase caused me to seek out the rest of the series, and I loved every one of them. By the end, I felt like the characters were old friends that I still have to go back and …
I absolutely loved this entire series!
One to read and reread.
It was a good story.
I first read this book many many years a go… no, I’m not saying HOW many, but I was a LOT younger, and still have the book club edition on my shelves. Some of it reminds me of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld- the same sort of skewed view and considerations. After all, if *you* bought a Magic Kingdom, found out to your shock it was REAL… and then …
I have long preferred the Landover books to Shannara. Fans of time travel stories are likely to enjoy this series. Terry Brooks makes you feel for the ‘hero’ on the very first page, which makes the adventure he sets upon all the more endearing. The not-exactly-Camelot quirkiness of Landover will keep you smiling, even amidst the peril. The ‘modern …
The author reminds me of me…if you like this, check out Toto’s Tale – the dogs version of what happened in Oz
I would totally read this again. It was a really fun fantasy. As I was reading this book I was wanting to be whisked into this world of adventure.
