Magic in the mountains, the debut novel from aspiring Paranormal romance writer, Donna Kunkel is an enjoyable read. When Alex becomes stranded in a severe Colorado blizzard, she ends up on Steve’s front porch. Both are drawn to one another, though neither one wants to admit there’s an attraction. Both also have secrets they would rather not share. Has the heavy snowfall renders the roads unpassable, they are stuck with each other until the roads can be cleared, which could take weeks. As the time goes, by the attractions become harder to deny, and the secrets harder to hide. What I find most enjoyable about Mrs. Kunkel story is her ability to write and develop characters that the reader can become fully invested. Whether it be an adult, a child or an animal, her characters truly come to life through the magic of her pen. The only suggestion I can make is that at times she tends to spend too much time describing scenes and situations that pertain very little to the story line. This causes the story to stall in places. Over all though I found her story to be interesting and eagerly await its continuation.
Magic in the Mountains is a paranormal romance I truly enjoyed. The Hero and heroine are well rounded and sweet. Alex, a witch decides she’d rather live without the use of her magic than put up with the problematic wizards she’s dated.
Caught in a snow storm, she winds up snowbound at a reclusive prospector’s cabin with a demonic hen, a really entertaining cow and dog that act human. Then there is the unicorn, need I say more? And there is more to the reclusive prospector, Steve, than Alex can imagine. A fun entertaining read I recommend.
Couldn’t put it down kept me pulled into it. Loved it so much. Great book to read.
Five star book (feb 2021)
Update review. Still love this book and I couldn’t put it down at all. Still a five star book. Highly recommend. (July 2021)
City witch Alex is giving up magic, due to her dealings with some very trying wizards. So when she ends up stranded in a cabin with sexy human prospector Steve, her promise to not use magic is put to the test. It’s getting harder to deny her attraction to Steve and even harder to not use her natural magic abilities, especially when she encounters a demonic hen, a cow that acts like a dog, and a dog that acts human. When a unicorn arrives, she hits her limit. But Steve has secrets too, even though she can’t ferret out what his secrets are. Will these two scarred souls accept one another when the magic is unleashed and realize how strong their love can be or will they crash and burn?
Magic in the Mountains is an unusual paranormal romance. From the beginning, I was drawn into the story with very descriptive narration. I connected with Alex right away and I enjoyed her vivacity. Steve, on the other hand, is a tortured hero and his complexity drew me to him. The romance moves at a good pace with a fair share of angst. The plot, though, seems to go at a good clip then stall over parts of the story. A little less description and more action/emotion/dialogue would work better. What I loved most was the magical realism plus the animals. Who doesn’t love a story with a unicorn in it? If you love paranormal romance, pick up Magic in the Mountains. Are you looking for an escape? If so, you’ll be transported to the Colorado mountains in Magic in the Mountains.

My Rating: 4.5 stars
Never had more fun stuck in a mountainside cabin with such a cluster of characters!!! Grab yourself a mug of hot chocolate and hunker down for this lovely bit of magic, mayhem and surprises galore. Who says being away from society is a bad thing?? Well, ok, at first Alex did, but she learns to love it, even the tough parts!!!! Amazing what you never knew you’d always missed!!
An engaging plot that I found to be a fun read. Intriguing characters and great interaction between them. Loved the interesting animals and their antics. Written so I was able to totally become immersed in the story and its characters lives. First time reading this author and glad I found her stories.
this was a first book of yours i read and i really enjoyed it! she is a witch who decides to put her magic on hold a live a normal life. caught in a storm she ends up at his cabin. not use to seeing people he is shocked. both keeping secrets. read to find out what happens.
Danna Kunkle is new to me. She did a fantastic job writing this book.
It was well written and I really enjoyed the characters.
This was an easy flow read.
I highly recommend this book.
I really loved the magestic setting that captivated me and drew me into the story. I liked Alex from the very beginning she’s warm, sweet, funny and just a little kooky. The journeys of discovery that the characters go on interweave into a wonderfully readable and magical story that you could go back to again and again.
Alex Klein is really, really tired of magical men that is why Jason the human account is perfect for her or so she believes. Having given up magic for a month Alex is determined to live like a normal human being or die trying. Good luck with that!!! Stuck in a Colorado mountain valley during a blizzard Alex is thrilled to stop at Steve’s remote cabin. Steve is a somewhat antisocial miner who is not exactly as he appears for that matter neither is Alex. Yet the longer they are forced together by the impossible weather conditions the more attractive they become. Will they be able to continue to hide their secrets from each other? Will love conquer all? We will just have to see. “Magic in the Mountains is” an entertaining paranormal story and a delightful read.
I gifted was gifted this book by the author and I decided to volunteer to read and review it.
A fun story full of intriguing characters, crazy animals and so much more. I enjoyed the magic and dash of romance as well. The story was a little slow moving for me though.
