From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Kate Daniels series comes a tale of darkness, desire, and werecats. Alpha Pack leader Jim Shrapshire has always been the strong, silent type. But something has come over him—a magic force currently residing in one of the Pack’s headquarters. Were-tigress Dali Harimau has always wished she could get Jim’s attention—but now he needs her help. … now he needs her help.
Stricken with a magic-sickness, Jim needs Dali’s flair for magic. And to save him, she must challenge a powerful, dark being to a battle of wits.
Magic Dreams originally appeared in the anthology Hexed.

This novella focuses on Jim and his potential mate, it is fantastic and once the action gets started it never stops. I really enjoyed that non Anglo Saxon paranormal entities are included, vampires, were-wolves, banshees etc. are not the only big bads in the world, all cultures have mystical and evil creatures and Magic Dreams included some of the Asian ones. I enjoyed the solving of the mystery at the heart of the story and look forward to reading more about Jim and Dali in the future.
Alpha Jim Shrapshie is the strong, silent type who tries to handle everything himself. When a magical force overtakes one of the packs headquarters he has to rely on weretiger Dali Harimau for help.
This was such a great novella! I need more Jim and Dali stories now! Ever since Dali was introduced in Magic Strikes I have wanted to know more about her and her magic. We get to meet some of her family, her neighborhood and see her wield more of her magic. She is just a fascinating character that I wish had more page time in this series.
Jim was just as protective and alpha as I expected. He has been one of the main side characters from the beginning and it’s great to see him finally admit his feelings about Dali. I really hope we get more novella’ with these two because they are just a great couple!
FYI this novella was originally published in the anthology Hexed.
One of my favorite series!
Magic Dreams is a short story set after Fathers and Sons (Curran’s POV, Volume 2) and Magic Slays. It’s focused on Jim, the Head of Security for the Pack, and Dali, a member of Jim’s clan in the Pack. Jim shifts into a black panther and Dali shifts into a white tiger. Because of her eyesight, Dali is legally blind with the stereotypical Coke-Bottom glasses to prove it. She’s also a vegetarian who gets sick at a the sign of blood. It makes for some humorous moments. This story is called Magic Dreams because Jim has been affected by a curse and is having a hard time staying away. If he sleeps, he’ll die. He turns to Dali for help. Dali can sense magic better than Jim can. Working together, they free someone from a horrible underground market who will play a roll later in the series. To save Jim, Dali has to confront what cursed him by herself. This was a short (less than 2 hours) read and it was fun to see Jim’s and Dali’s perspective on Kate, who’s not in this story at all. It’s a wonderful addition to the world of Kate Daniels.
The writing team of Ilona Andrews is one of my favorites. Love their writing, and this novella enriches the Kate Daniels series.
Audiobook: Narrator – Renee Raudman
Oh my gosh!!! I LOVED this performance! Ms. Raudman did a superb job as Dali! I can’t imagine this character sounding any other way than how she is portrayed in this audio. This narrator took this short story and made it her own!
Dali has always been a bit peculiar to me, but then again, I thinks she’s supposed to be that way to everyone. I often wondered what her background and motivations were and now I know and oh my! I loved her so much! This is a fast, intense read/listen and it has a great balance of thrills/chills and suspense, along with a bit of romance. I’m all about the romance but too much can kill a story and not enough can make me lose interest. This had the perfect ratio for me. And lordie! When this wraps up, let’s just say Jim turned me into a swoony mess!
In order to get to this one you’re going to need to read the other before it but I gotta say that this has been my fave…it’s all about the geek to me!
It was so awesome getting to see more of Jim and Dali ,they are both cool characters
I loved this little story ,the only thing I would change is that it so needs to be way longer then 68 pages ,I’ve been waiting to see their story and this is all she writes ,I really hope they get another story because I loved seeing them get together .
Dali is so funny ,I love that she’s a vegetarian even tho she’s a tiger shifter ,I love how she drives Jim crazy ,they make a great couple .
I loved Jim from the start of this series and I was so happy that we got to see a little more from his character ,he’s so dark and broody ,I loved at the end of the story that he made Dali dinner ,that was so sweet 🙂
It just needs to be longer ,why why why is it so short ? ,but still an awesome read 🙂
Excellent story about another two nifty characters from the Kate Daniels series. These two were awesome and this was a great, quick read.
