The fourth Kate Daniels novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author who “defines urban fantasy” (Fresh Fiction).Kate Daniels works for the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle—especially if they involve Atlanta’s shapeshifting community. When she’s called in … community.
When she’s called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar midway between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers there’s a new player in town. One who’s been around for thousands of years—and rode to war at the side of Kate’s father.
This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, to handle. Because this time, Kate will be taking on family…

Wow this series just keeps getting more intense with each instalment and every book moves the story forward. I love how with each book the stakes are raised as more and more are revealed about the characters and this one relationships are developed, both romantically, professionally and personally. This is action packed and never lets up, I recommend this series for anyone who likes urban fantasy, but start at the beginning or you will miss the full effect of what the author intended.
When Kate Daniels is called to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, she discovers there is a new villain in town. One who has been around for thousands of years, and has fought by her father’s side.
I was addicted to this series by the end of book one, but this book is where I really started loving it. I think this series gets better each time I read it! This book was just nonstop action, suspense, and romance!
Kate is such an amazing and deadly female. I love her so much! She always puts everyone else around her first, especially her friends. In this book, she finally admits that she doesn’t want to be a psychopathic killer like her stepfather wanted her to be. She wants a life, a mate, and her friends. When those things are at risk, she fights with everything in her to protect them, even if it means she dies.
Kate and Curran start off on the wrong foot, again, in the beginning but they finally put their pride aside and admit their feelings. I really fell in love with Curran in this book. He acts like an ass for a little bit in this one but it’s all because he is super territorial of Kate and afraid of losing her. He is just a great alpha male who I know will get better as the books continue.
This book is definitely a turning point in the series because so much changes in a short period of time. Kate and Curran finally become a couple! There are changes regarding her work and she is definitely no longer trying to hide from her father. This was an excellent book and I can’t wait to dive right into the next book.
I dove right into this one after reading the story before it. This series is just so incredible that I can’t help but binge read it to catch up even the short stories between and the alternate scenes in the Gordon Andrews’ Curran POV volume.
This book was a pivotal one in the series. Things have been building themselves to a boiling point when it comes to Kate’s relationship with The Order where she works, with her relationship with Curran and with his Pack and with her secrets unraveling on her. Each book also provides a worthy opponent for her to face bringing things down to an exciting end. I wish I could give this one a spectacular rating that exceeds what is offered.
I love that while Kate is tough, street savvy, snarky and witty. She is also vulnerable. She is also stubborn in her vulnerability so that she actually makes things harder on herself. She has a strong sense of justice and right and wrong, but has always gone her own way. Now, justice has been challenged when the Order wants her to see anything as not pure human as less than human and disposable and her friends and Curran are challenging her to let people into her life and her heart- to not always go it alone and remain aloof. I loved seeing these dynamics at play even as she faced a truly formidable foe.
All in all, this was fantastic and I can’t wait to read more of this series and stay immersed in this world.
I had to get up really early this morning to work a double shift (yeah overtime pay!), so I decided to reward myself with Kate. She is guaranteed to have a worse day at work than me even if it all goes to pot in the hospital! How about battling your psychopath of an aunt while she tries to bring Babylon leveling chaos to Atlanta in an attempt to do your father’s bidding? Aren’t you glad that your family is less megalomaniacal? Unless you are the child of a crazy dictator in which case Kate’s suggestion seems to be try and kill your crazy family before they kill you and everybody else.
Update on Curran and Kate’s slow burn romance: the first chapter made me want to throw the chair at the wall the first time I read it. Still made me do an internal dramatic moan and face pull the second time. They are just such a weird but wonderful mess together. Honestly, this is the book where I got almost to the end and threatened to take them away from the Andrews family and put them in my pocket where they will be safe from not living happily ever after.
Gore warning: This book has major eww! Blood, vomit, dislocated or severed bones, crawling pestilence puddles. I’m all for them making my favorite books into moves most of the time, but this one would make me so freaking nauseous!
And on that note: Happy Reading!
My love for Kate Daniels just keeps getting deeper and deeper. She was taught to be tough and unfeeling as she was growing up. Yet, she’s anything but. She can’t keep from caring for people and, when she cares, it’s bone-deep. Her love even extends to a dog who she adopts after rescuing it. The foe that she battles in this book scares the you know what out of Kate because she know this is the toughest fight she’s ever faced. Kate has said foe cornered, TWICE, and is stopped from taking out that foe by someone else on another person’s order. Kate is so frustrated, she wants to scream. Her feelings for Curran have also deepened to the point that she can no longer deny them. She tries to, she can’t keep from doing so. Kate knows that the instant she gives in to her love for Curran, that a huge target will be placed on him AND the Pack. Because she loves him, she doesn’t want that to happen. She was taught that friendship and love tie you down and make you weak. Yet, over time, she’s learned that the opposite it true. When you have real friends and real love, it makes you stronger than ever. Kate is forced to do things in this book that break her heart and make her see herself as a monster. Yet, what she does is ultimately compassionate. It also sets the stage for something that will happen in a book later in the series. In the last battle of the book, Curran fights nearly to the death to save Kate, who is finally able to defeat her foe. The cost of this to Curran is that he becomes comatose for 11 days. During that time, Kate is challenged by shapeshifters almost everyday, being forced to prove she has the right to stay by Curran’s side. When Curran wakes up and discovers this, he feels like he’s been stabbed in the heart. His sense of betrayal by the Pack is very deep and it infuriates him that his mate was challenged while he was helpless to do anything about it. Kate triumphed in every challenge and proved that no one was going to move her from Curran’s side for any reason. By the end of the book, Kate and Curran are a solid couple and they are both determined that nothing and no one will come between them. Kate is no longer lonely. She madly in love with Curran and now she has to deal with all that that means. She’s fought for the Pack and nearly died for them. Something else very significant happens in the book, but I don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t say what that something was. It does have lasting consequences as the saga continues. I cannot recommend this series highly enough!
I’ve read every book in the series and could read them all over again – love it!
Audiobook: Narrator – Renee Raudman
This narrator has definitely grown on me and now I can safely say that I am completely enjoying her performance. She does a wide variety of voices and actually performs them rather than simply reading them. Admittedly, there are a time or two that a character’s “voice” will grate, but I’m totally forgiving of it as there are so many characters and each one has their own distinctive rhythm and sound…that’s a lot of variety for this narrator.
Wow, this book totally kept me involved, even more so than any of the others previously! We learn so much more about Kate and meet some very interesting other worldly characters. And we also get so much more of Curran as well as Kate and Curran together. Oh yeah! Things are definitely heated to boiling in that department. I gotta admit, the case she works on in this one had me totally glued to my earbuds. I didn’t want to miss a thing!
So glad I let book buddies talk me into listening to this series!
Ok, so in Magic Strikes we got a better picture of Curran’s back story. In Magic Bleeds, it’s Kate’s turn! And what a back story she has!!! We got bits and pieces of it throughout the first three books but this one really unveils the bigger picture.
This book is also the first book that takes a real dark kind of tense turn. I think in the previous three books, I have never questioned whether or not Kate was going to pull out the win. Magic Bleeds really made me question how far this would go before she swooped in and saved the day. Great job on writing in the tension!!
Magic Bleeds gets a 5 star rating from me!
Ok, I have a couple favorite moments from Magic Bleeds. Here’s the first:
“Are you out of your mind?”
It’s not polite to lie to your best friend. “It’s a possibility.”
And another:
“What’s that?”
“That’s my attack poodle.”
And another:
“It seems that the young woman made some indelicate suggestion of a threesome…When I got there, Miss Nash was standing by the hot tub in a small bikini, pointing the business end of a SIG-Sauer P-226 at her fella and concerned members of the hotel staff, while dunking the scantily clad female’s head under the water and asking, “Who’s diving for clams now, bitch?”
This series just keeps getting better and better with every book 🙂
Oh my god I felt so bad for Kate at the beginning of the book ,When Curran stands her up ,I almost cried because Kate was in so much pain ,but I loved when they finally see each other and everything for the most part gets put right ,Kate kicks so much ass in them book ,i loved the storyline and it was so awesome getting to see more Kate and Curran scenes .they make this book so much fun and i am always waiting to see what’s gonna happen next between the two of them 🙂
Curran ,what is there to say about him besides that he is such an amazing character and a super hottie ,i so enjoy reading his scenes with Kate ,they are totally meant for each other ,he’s such a fun character and i can’t wait to see more from him 🙂 he’s just so Mmmm (Swoon fan’s self )
This book was pure awesomeness, everything from the characters to the plot is kick ass ,you can’t go wrong if you read this series ,this series has got it all from action, magic, steamy scenes and it’s always brings the witty/funny remarks 🙂 It’s a must read .
I love Curran. I want him for my own, even. Who wouldn’t want a prehistoric lion shifter who is quite crazy? Though, I do think Kate is perfect for him. This book was brilliant and couldn’t have gotten better!
Great series! One of my favorites! Love it!
