Fab book, fab series, plus it’s complete so you can binge it! If you like your urban fantasy with more action than romance (yes!!!) and kick butt heroines with dark and deadly secrets (OMG! Even more yes!), check out this series.

Slow and uninteresting. I usually like urban fantasy, but this one fell short. I made it about halfway through before losing interest.
The Kate Daniels world always comes with a high body count and way too much aggression. I choose to read this duo’s other series. I am also uncomfortable with the back story of the major players. sorry but this is not my cup of tea. Like my heroes and heroines with a higher ratio of moral fiber to survival at all cost skills.
Loved it couldn’t wait for more and still waiting

Favorite Quote: “Have you ever met someone and felt . . . I don’t know how to describe it, felt a chance at having something that eluded you? I don’t know . . . Forget I said anything.”
I knew what he meant. He was describing that moment when you realize that you are lonely. For a time you can be alone and doing fine and never give a thought to living any other way and then you meet someone and suddenly you become lonely. It stabs at you, almost like a physical pain, and you feel both deprived and angry, deprived because you wish to be with that person and angry, because their absence brings you misery.”
Review:
I hate saying this, I really do, but this book was bad. It was really bad. I wanted to dnf it so many times. Ask my friend Jessica, we where reading this book together, I was complaining so much. I only pushed through because it was a buddy read.
In the beginning I thought that the story just had to warm up or something like that. That it would get better over time. Sadly that wasn’t the case.
I didn’t like Kate at all. I couldn’t connect with her one bit. She annoyed me so much and I couldn’t see why people where so taken with her. She was suppose to be this bad ass hunter but she didn’t show much skill if you ask me.
Curran was a bit better but It was a little to late. I was already disliking the story so much that he didn’t make it better either.
We where thrown in the story without any back story what so ever. No explanation of the world we where in, no explanation of the creatures we encountered besides the name. That really didn’t help with wanting to connect with the story. There was magic being used with no explanation what so ever so we don’t know if it was good or bad or strong or what it does etc. Nothing. I hoped that it would all be revealed later on but no. I skimmed through allot of the book because hardly anything was happening. There was so much unnecessary inner dialog. There was too many things being described that didn’t need to be described for 2 pages. The balans was off.
I know lots of people love this series, and that they say it gets better but this book didn’t show me anything that makes it worth wanting to find out.
It’s funny that even the authors dislike this first book, and when a friend told the authors that she liked the first book, they looked at her questionably and asked her why haha.
I want to point out that just because I didn’t like this book doesn’t mean anyone else won’t like it either. I would encourage you to try the book if you want to and see for yourself.
Who knows I might give the second book a try but I highly doubt it. It’s sad because I wanted to like this book. If the authors spend a little more time setting up the world, explaining the magic stuff etc a bit better and introducing the characters better then it would be a great book.
Rating:
1 /2 I hated it stars
I love this entire series. 🙂
Great series, great book. I have read this more than once.
Exciting, absorbing, lots of action and quirky humour with kickass Heroine. My All Time Favourite Paranormal Series.
Another series of books that is so imaginative and well-written, as is everything I’ve read by Illona Andrews.
Anything Ilona Andrews writes is a five star book. One of my favorite writing team. The Kate Daniels books were great, and my favorite the Innkeeper series.
The first part of this review is for A Questionable Client. This is a quick introduction to the world of Kate Daniels, which introduces the listener to Kate, a member of the Mercenary Guild of Atlanta, Georgia. We also meet Mark and the Clerk of the Guild, along with some of Kate’s fellow mercs. We are also introduced to some of the magic wielded by the Russians who live in the area. Kate is given a bodyguarding gig for a client called Saimon, a being who can assume any human size, shape or gender. This short story sets the scene for the first book in the Kate Daniels series and was a lot of fun to listen to.
The second part of this review is for Magic Bites. Ilona Andrews has created a powerhouse heroine in Kate Daniels! She’s incredibly tough, smart/educated, funny/sarcastic and can kick butt better than anyone. She has a code of honor that runs soul deep and she’ll die before she lets anyone she cares about get hurt. Heck, even strangers receive the best Kate has. Kate can also be suicidally stubborn, achingly lonely and heartbreakingly vulnerable. I adore this character and this series because ALL the characters are so vividly described that the story plays out like a movie in my head as I read the book. Kate lives in what I think of as an alternate/parallel reality/universe where magic has returned to the world with a vengeance and technology is slowly being destroyed. Kate lives in Georgia around the Atlanta area and all matter of beasties have literally emerged from the woods, water and air. Kate takes us on an exhilarating thrill ride as she races to solve the murder of her beloved legal guardian, the last member of her family left in her life. Along the way, she meets uber Alpha Curran, the Beast Lord. It’s so much fun to watch the sparks fly between these two and Kate has some great zingers she zaps Curran with from time to time. Fortunately for the reader, Curran gives as good as he gets. I especially like this version of the first Kate Daniels book because it includes the prequel story to the series, 2 scenes of the book from Curran’s point of view, a question/answer section with Ilona Andrews and detailed descriptions of some of the major characters from the book. This is the version I’d recommend everyone read. I don’t want to give anything away here so I won’t go into details on this book. Suffice to say, if you haven’t read this book yet, you’re really missing out. I own all of the Kate Daniels in both mass market paperback AND now I have them on Kindle, too. You can’t go wrong with the Kate Daniels series! I’m waiting for the next book with great impatience which is one of the highest compliments I can give to any author. Take my advice and treat yourself to the Kate Daniels series. You’ll be happy you did!
I might have to shoot myself! This series is so good I really hate to see it end. Many, many shapeshifters, unbelievablely powerful god, lots of action, and everything leaves you wanting more.
Love this series and these writers. I’ve read everything this husband and wife team has written.
This is a great book. It has a strong protagonist and good world building. It is violent but you cannot have lions and tigers and bears and vampires without some level of bloodshed. The author does not explain every little reference made and tie up the everything with a bow, which is appreciated by this reader who likes there to be something to look forward to in the next book. I expect there to be lots of exciting interaction between Kate and Curran in the future as the mysteries around exactly what Kate’s origins are get delved into. This is an excellent fantasy and I went and got more in the series when I was only halfway through the book, two thumbs up.
