This husband/wife duo has created such a fun post apocalyptic world using the usual monsters (i.e. Vampires, shape shifters, etc) and then elevating them along with creations entirely their own. They have such an array of characters it makes it hard to have just one favorite. I enjoy that they insert such humor into their work and I love that. I feel it makes things well rounded within their world, so that I laugh, I cry, I scream in outrage. It’s a world that sucks you in and always leaves you wanting the next adventure.
There’s this cool TV show called Wynonna Earp about a woman how hunts supernatural creatures. And I’m not kidding when I say Wynonna and Kate are basically the same person. They’re full of sass and absolutely hilarious.

Today I’m reviewing one of my favorite book series. Magic Bites is the first book in the Kate Daniels series, written by wife and husband, Ilona and Gordon Andrews. Together they write as Ilona Andrews. Magic Bites is the first book in a ten-book series.
I wrote four pages about this paranormal romance in my book journal after reading it cover to cover in six days. I originally found Magic Bites through the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club book of the month.
Highlights:
This book is laugh-out-loud funny. A compelling blend of mystery, magic, paranormal world-building, and romance. I immediately wanted to read book 2, Magic Burns.
Magic is openly practiced in this alternative version of Atlanta, which is always an intriguing change from books where magic is forbidden and hidden. Kate is a multi-faceted, talented, interesting character who easily carries her title role.
Kate’s love interest is Curran, a lion shifter and leader with the Beast Lord title. They meet because they end up having to work together, and let me say, they show serious battle skills and mind-blowing battle scenes. There are some disgusting characters and moments that are written well and not in a gory, haunting way.
Magic Bites is a perfect beginning to the series. My star rating is 4 out of 5.
I recommend this book for readers who enjoy paranormal romance and urban fantasy.
The first half of this book was a bit hard to get into. It’s filled with info-dumping and too many characters. I’m sure it’s all going to be great to know in later books, but with this one it was a bit of a struggle to read about. I liked the characters. They’re definitely the star of the show, but I didn’t care for the setting or world. Nothing that happened mattered to me, which is a shame.
Not sure if I’ll continue with this series, but if I do, it won’t be for a while.
Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews –Kate is a mercenary in post-magical apocalypse Atlanta. In traditional human fashion, when magic reasserted itself and technology only worked part time humans (and not quite humans) adapted. Kate’s godfather Greg (and a knight) turns up murdered, and Kate goes to his office to take over the case he was working on. As she starts to piece together the evidence, Kate realizes that someone wants to create enough chaos in the city to get away with some pretty sick murders. Necromancers, shape shifters, and some pretty complicated humans are all at each other’s throats. By the time that Kate thinks she has the monster behind it all, she starts to worry that it may be more than she can handle. Not to mention the king of the shape shifters starts to realize that she is not as ordinary as she wants to appear. This is a great series!! Lots of quirky characters and multicultural magic mayhem. Happy Reading!
This was a great book! I don’t know how I have never read Ilona Andrews before!! Kate is a no nonsense kind of woman! She is a very relatable character. And I love the twist this book takes on the supernatural. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series and have already purchased the next 3 books!
Loved it. Loved the entire series. So original.
Just too many information and/or world building that the actual events and story line passed by without me noticing it. Too bad, I guess this series just isn’t for me.
A great series.
I think this book had a massive case of overhyping, and I expected better than what I got. This world is exciting, and an intriguing concept, but the characters fell flat. I can easily see it getting better, but this book was not exceptional.

I love the husband wife team of Ilona Andrews. They know how to take a great character and then develop her history her future and her world. They have done a great job NOT having any kind of love triangle, but also maintaining the love story between her and Curran. Just an all around excellent series. Love the stuff with her dad and the character growth, and what a unique world premise, too. Love love.
So easy to fall in love with the fully, 3 dimensional characters in the Kate Daniels’ world that I occasionally forget that they are not real people!
A great start to the Kate Daniels’ series. The world building is particularly well done and interesting. The characters were also well developed. The series is worth reading!
Excellent series – you cannot go wrong with anything by this author!!
Great read. I have read the whole series numerous times. To much sex thought (in detail)
I’ve read every book in this series. Great writing!
Great series. Exceptionally good writers
It took me a while to get through this first book. But the second and third books just flew by once I was familiar with the characters and the world. Fun reading!
A great series.
Fun comic read. I felt like I was in a video game.
