I love this series so hard! The world-building is phenomenal and the characters memorable. And yes, there is a great slow-burn romance in the pages. Kate & Curran forever!
I recently read Iron and Magic, which is set in the same world as this series, and the world building is SO cool I had to go back to the beginning to get Kate Daniels’ story! Set in an apocalyptic present-day (or near future?), technology gets randomly switched on and off by waves of magic. With the magic comes all sorts of crazy, powerful, and threatening creatures. Kate’s job is basically magical pest control, except the pests are truly dangerous and horrifying. She’s a very snarky, takes-no-shit kind of heroine, which I always love! Plus she has a giant magical sword, so that’s cool.
The first book in an incredibly complex and gritty urban fantasy series. Tech and magic are at war, and magic is winning. Vampires, shapeshifters, and monsters roam post-shift Atlanta. Enter Kate Daniels, a smart mouth mercenary with a special sword and a dangerous secret heritage. There is romance, a good one in fact, but that isn’t the focus of the books and it enhances the growth of the characters involved. Everytime a new book comes out I set time aside for it, and am sad when it ends. These are the best in the genre.
I cannot believe how I ever missed out on reading the paranormal romance novels by writer duo Ilona Andrews all these years. Now I’m making up for lost time by burning through the Kate Daniels books first. Excellent writing, pulse-pounding ploys, heavy on the paranormal world-building with a slow burn on the romance angle, these stories are just the way I love ’em. Highest praise for this series!
One of my all-time favorite urban fantasy reads! Love the world-building, love Kate, love the chemistry between Kate and Curran.
I told an author friend who reads as voraciously as I do that I was looking for new Urban Fantasy. Illona Andrews was one of 2 recommendations she made. I bought Books 2 and 3 about half-way through Book 1. I couldn’t stop reading. I think I read all 7 of the main series in less than a month. I own the novella now as well but haven’t gotten to them yet. These are really great reads that will definitely give a reader escape.
This Kate Daniels series is amazing. It started a bit slowly in this book but went on with amazing books to follow. It is my favorite of my favorites. Action, humor great characters. The theme with all my favorites is strong women, or really strong well-developed characters. I feel as though I know them personally; they are so real to me. They also make be FEEL.
This is one of my most favorite series ever. Anyone who is interested in paranormal and urban fantasy books should definitely check of this series. The Kate Daniels series is full of humour, action, a little drama and a lot of great banter between Kate and Curran, the protagonists. Kate is one kick ass heroine. She can wield a sword like no other and fight her way through anything. She is not your regular damsel in distress waiting for the white knight to show up.
My first entree into the Urban Fantasy genre and it did not disappoint! I love the fact that while she kicks butt, the main character, Kate Daniels, also takes her licks. She’s tough as nails but vulnerable without losing her edge. A fantastic entry to a series that just gets better with each book. The others, a husband & wife team, write as 1 so there’s no disjointed feel to the book. The passion, while lusty, doesn’t wander into Penthouse Forum territory the way the Anita Blake series has degenerated. A good escape read!
Magic Bites is the first book in what is (in my humble opinion) the best urban fantasy series. It’s true that the husband-wife writing team of Ilona Andrews can do no wrong, but the Kate Daniels series is their standout for me. The series follows Kate, a tough, smart-mouthed, and fiercely independent mercenary who, in this first book, must find who murdered her mentor and avenge his death. Along the way, she crosses paths with Curran Lennart, the Beast Lord of Atlanta, and sparks fly.
What Ilona Andrews does well: great action, good laughs, fantastic three-dimensional characters, organic plots, and one of the best worlds in UF. Bored of vampires? This series has the single most original take on vampires in any series, bar none. Kate’s world is very different from our own, but still recognizable in all of the important ways. Trust me: you’ll binge this series from beginning to end and then reread it whenever you get the chance. Simply brilliant.
This was the start of a wonderful series for me! The world building here is phenomenal, with a cast of characters (headed by the indomitable Kate Daniels), that immediately feel like family. Humor, romance, action, horror….this series checks all the boxes and more. Love, love, love.
Loved the story, the characters, and the world. The editing is excellent. Why only three stars? I wish it was less graphic. It seems (to me) to be over the top gory and bloody. Yes, I get it, it’s fantasy/adventure. There’s violence. I just don’t care for the explicit details. I made the choice not to go on. Disappointing as the rest of the story is so well done. If gore doesn’t bother you, I highly recommend this book.
I think this is my fave urban fantasy series. I’m sad it’s done but all Ilona’s books are good so there will be plenty more to read!
Everyone kept telling me I just had to read this series since it fits right in with the books I just love to read. Obviously I finally caved and worked it into my reading schedule and man did I wish I would have done it sooner. Kate Daniels is one in-depth fascinating character that can really hold her own. There are still lots of secrets I am dying to learn but this was a great introduction to one doozy of a world. The writing really brings the story to life and you find your self rooting for her to kick some butt and just plain survive. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Love these authors!
In this world, magic dominates in waves causing cars to stall and guns to fail. Then technology will take over when the magic fails and spells no longer protect you from the monsters. Kate Daniels lives by her sword. She is a mercenary for hire but when her guardian is killed she decides to hunt down his killer.
This is a solid start for the Kate Daniels series. There was a lot of world building and introduction of characters, all of which were fascinating. Kate is a tough as nails woman who knows that sometimes you have to face your fears to destroy the monster. We get some of her background in this book but there is clearly a bigger secret she is hiding from everyone, which does get revealed in later books. Kate was just a fascinating and deadly heroine and I quite enjoyed her sarcastic and funny comments.
The pack structure in this world is very fascinating because while there may be different smaller packs of shifters, there is a beast lord who rules over them. I found Curran fascinating and I can’t wait to learn more about him as I reread this series (I don’t really remember much). All of the side characters in this book were fascinating and well developed. I really want to know more about them and see more of them in the future.
Overall, a powerful start to a series. I love Ilona Andrews writing style and world building. I can always count on her to create a fascinating world with well developed, and likeable, characters.
I’m recommending first books of series that I love and this one is an all-time favourite! To me, Ilona Andrews is the gold standard of urban fantasy authors. (Also, I recently met them – the husband and wife team that are the author – and they were as gracious and lovely as I could have hoped!)
Kate is everything I want from a uf heroine: kickass, kind of a mess at the start, incredibly loyalty, and a strong moral code. The world building is off-the-charts original. If you haven’t read Andrews’ books, be prepared to put your life on hold and binge them all!
Love the entire Kate Daniels series (and pretty much everything Ilona Andrews writes). This is the first in this series and although it takes a little time to become fully immersed in the story, it is a world I am so grateful I stumbled into. Full of fabulous characters who are both likable (even the villains!) and endearing, while boasting a collection of mythological beings, creatures, and tales from across the globe. Magic Bites offers some pretty impressive world building to top it all off and is a must-read series for fans of shapeshifters, vampires, post-apocalyptic settings, paranormal romance, impressive magic, and snarky dialogue. One of my favorites!
I like a series of books where you get to know the characters – the only bad thing is when the series ends I feel a little lost until I meet some new characters.
One of my absolute favorite series!
