Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for what’s to come in this heart-stopping novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series. Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of … standing in the way of their walk to the altar.
Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in a never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.
The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

This is an epic book, that has a feel of finality, but it’s not the end. There is a lot going on in this book and it really digs in to what it means to be Rolands blood. This is a fantastic series and I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.
One of my favorite authors and favorite series. I love the world she has built, though I’m glad I don’t have to live there.
I love this series!
Huge fan
All the Kate Daniels books are wonderful. They’re well-written with plotlines that are entertaining without being too simplistic. The characters are engaging and relatable despite the paranormal circumstances in which they live. Youll want to read the entire series.
Ilona Andrews is an auto buy for me and this series is amazing. Excellent paranormal romance AND urban fantasy.
Every book in the Kate Daniels series is a 5 star read. Magical Atlanta rocks! The characters are wonderful, the villains are demented and the relationship between Kate and Curran is awesome .Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning with Magic Bites, you will not be sorry.
I love Ilona Andrews’ Magic series a lot. Each of the books does depend on the previous ones so I would strongly suggest reading them in order. And I also highly recommend the Innkeeper series, again, read in order.
I read ANYTHING Ilona Andrews writes. The Kate Daniels series was my introduction to this writing team and I have read and enjoyed every book in the series. I am a REAL wuss when it comes to blood and guts, yet I have been able to skip the really bloody parts without losing the thread of the action. If you haven’t read this author, and you like paranormal stories, I can’t recommend them highly enough. And after reading Kate Daniels, you will be find yourself compelled to read the Edge series, the Innkeeper series, and the Hidden Legacy series. . . . You WILL NOT be disappointed.
Love Kate!!!!
Another kick ass Kate Daniels novel and I’m crying that I’ve got to wait for another! I loved Kate and Curran, as always. Such a brilliant couple. I want to draw and quarter Jim. Slap Julie at first. I absolutely adored Erra returning for this book. I devoured it in two sittings. Abso-freaking-lutely amazing!
Magic Binds is a fantastic story packed with action, friendship, betrayal, a lot of knowledge revelation/ transfer, & a bit of intimacy. The authors did a wonderful job with the storyline from beginning to end and the ending sets the next story up nicely.
If there were half stars, I would have given this book 4.5. Don’t get me wrong. I loved it. But I missed Kate and Curran fighting as a team, always together. I know that they needed a bit of separation so that Kate could wrestle with a few inner demons, and I liked that struggle, but they felt SO separate, each of them doing their own thing, in this book, that it changed the feel of the book for me. Still one of the best writers I read, at the top of the book chain, but one of the things I look forward to when I read this series was missing for me. As for everything else, who can write beter battle scenes and more tension than Ilona Andrews? With humor, even.
I can’t believe I waited this long to read this book. I really need to start to read the most recent books in my favorite paranormal/urban fantasy series. I have been slacking so much the last couple of years. I have been mostly reading romance, and neglecting one of my favorite genres. When I started Magic Binds, I was sucked right into the story. Even though I read the previous book two years ago, it felt like I read it yesterday. I missed the characters so much and I loved seeing how all of them were doing. This author duo are still on top of their game. They manage to put so much in one book and not have it feel rushed or too much. It was just PERFECT. I just know lovers of this series won’t be disappointed with this installment. I am also glad that there wasn’t a cliffhanger, but there is still a lot to come. I especially adored the epilogue and I can’t wait for the next book to release.
Last night I sat down to begin reading this, read a few lines, thought “This sounds really familiar.”, but dismissed that feeling as a lot of Andrews’ books include the first chapter of the next book in the series as a teaser, so I may indeed have read the first chapter before. Then I read a few more lines and suddenly it dawned on me, I HAD read it, ALL of it, in the first few days of the year.
You see, stress/anxiety can really mess with your head and for some days leading up to Jan 4th I was suffering extreme anxiety about a holiday I was going on. I lost all appetite and became severely nauseous (which made my diabetes hard to control), and I had trouble concentrating on specific tasks – walk into a room and forget why I was there, put things down and ‘lose’ them, wander around in a daze, and it seems completely forget reading a highly anticipated book in my current favourite series. I thought I’d read a guaranteed five star book, that’d make me feel happy and take my mind off things (my psychologist recommends distraction as the best drug-free technique for relieving anxiety. Unfortunately, while I may have been distracted from my worries at the time, the book seems to have suffered from that tactic. The holiday (a South Pacific cruise) went off without a hitch (once I got to the airport most of my symptoms faded away), but I’ve almost completely forgotten what happened in the book I used to distract myself. I remember only four things about the book – thinking how unkatelike the blouse she’s wearing on the front cover is before reading and then after reading thinking that the blouse makes even less sense because at no point in the book is she described as wearing anything that resembles it, the opening lines I already mentioned and that final line (which I flicked to the back to check as a final test to see if I really had already read this book and forgotten it in an anxiety-induced stupor).
Now going back to it, knowing about as much about the plot as I did the first time, although it will probably come back to me as I read. At least I can say that this is my first guaranteed five star read of 2018. To be continued…
25/1 – Actually finished this on the 24th (noted for future reference when the read dates bug is fixed). Less humour/snark between Kate and Curran or Kate and Derek/Ascanio, but the gap left was handily filled with plenty of action, family drama and revelations. We also have the surprising reappearance of (view spoiler) who carried most of the snark in this one (everyone else was kind of busy and a bit more serious this time around).
Am I creepy for wondering if something’s going to happen between Julie and Derek? She’s 16 and he’s in his early 20s and they’ve been in life and death situations together many times, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Julie had developed a crush on Derek, but he’s a bit more inscrutable and I don’t think there have been any hints of him having feelings for her. But I can definitely imagine there being a defining moment for the pair, where suddenly he sees her as more than a rebellious girl who needs to be baby-sat for her own good.
So, Kate’s pregnant. All I can think is this is going to be a hard time for Curran. He definitely seems like the kind of guy who would get a little stressed if his pregnant wife was in any way involved in any kind of action, like the kind of action that Kate practically sees on a daily basis. And I’m sure Kate will be the kind of pregnant woman who doesn’t think she needs to spend nine months sitting with her feet up staying safe, especially if there is a threat to any of those under her protection. The next (last :/) book is going to be interesting and I can’t wait!
Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews is the 9th book in the Kate Daniels series. Can just “WOW” be the caption here? Andrews is clearly an unstoppable force in Urban Fantasy.
I am going to start by saying that if you are new to this series and have not read the previous books, STOP what you are doing. Go to your nearest dealer of all things books, put the rest of your TBR pile on hold and begin this journey from the beginning. Do not try to cheat! Do NOT try to see “if you will like it” by starting now. Just, trust me on this. The build up in each installment of the Kate Daniels series is unprecedented and I cannot think of anyone out there that is doing this better. The ability to ultimately change the dynamic of so many characters and still have the series going stronger than before…just mind-blowing. There is really no other way to describe it.
Kate and Curran continue to amaze me. The authors have retained the main characters individuality, allowing them to grow independently, all while their relationship continues to evolve. It is truly not only a work of art, but the authors have some kind of literary voodoo going on. (I am sure of it. I would place my money on a soul exchange.)
Magic Binds dives deeper into the world of crazy, also known as Kate’s father, Roland. Kate always manages to think outside of the box and put others first, even while battling her own demons. Magic Binds did not disappoint and I enjoyed every word of every chapter.
You would think the best books would be the easiest to review, but that is so not true. The books like Magic Binds are truly the great challenge in reviewing, even after 4+ years. I have no holes to point out, no inconsistencies to whine about and I feel like I should just bow down and say “we’re not worthy”. READ THIS SHIT.
Fans will be at awe. You will laugh out loud. You will likely shed a tear. And maybe you will be like me and decide to start back at the beginning with Magic Bites in audio, just because.
I am a true Kate Daniels fan. I can’t wait for the next book.
