Never again must another Arcanist rise… bestow his dark magic upon another. If they succeed, they’ll unleash a new terror upon an unsuspecting world.
It has been five years since I found out I’m a witch and, at last, I have taken the final plunge into the magical world: I moved. Now, I’m living with in New York with
my closest paranormal friends and interning at MES, the Magical Enforcement and Secrecy agency. Other than having to lie to my non-magic family, things are going great.
Except that magics keep going missing… Tasked with figuring out if these seemingly random disappearances are connected, my friends and I find ourselves on the edge of a huge breakthrough; there might be a cult of witches and wizards practicing an ancient, forbidden magic. Worse, it seems like one of them is inside MES.
There’s nobody to trust but each other and the deeper we go, the clearer it becomes that someone is trying to stop our investigation, even if it means using dark magic and deadly force.

I loved the More Than Magic series, so I was excited to hear about this new mystery-solving serial with all my favorite characters. This takes place five years from where we last saw everyone. This can be read by a new reader to the series, though reading the previous books would give you more background.
I liked that the gang was all back together in one city. I was especially happy to see Thomas and Jenn. What starts as just usual work turns into so much more. But what makes the mystery solving truly special are the characters. I love them all. And while this is a 6-part serial series, this book doesn’t leave off on a complete cliffhanger. I liked where things left off but can’t wait to see where things go next!
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of the MTM Trilogy and I am stoked to be back with my friends. This new series takes place five years later and while You do not have to have read the More Than Magic Trilogy to follow along with the new serial but it will add background on all the characters and their relationships.
Magic Betrayed is book one in the author’s six-book serial, Rise of the Arcanist. The new series is much darker and more sinister than the trilogy. Magics have been disappearing and it is up to our group to figure out why. Part fantasy, part mystery, all awesomeness, I flew threw the pages of this story. And that ending! Edge of my seat! Of course I can’t go into detail because of spoilers but trust me, one-click now.
I sure missed these characters. This a great first book of the series. As with other books by Elizabeth Kirke, the characters are so well written, it like they are one of good friends. The stories all have a great flow, with just the right amount of humor and suspense that you forget about time.
I have been a fan of the More Than Magic world for many years, so I was super excited to see another addition to that world. But before you start thinking you couldn’t possibly start reading this book without reading those, Kirke does an amazing job of filling you in whilst also avoiding a massive information dump to get you up to speed. So you can jump right in (but seriously, if you can read the others too then you should).
Magic Betrayed is the first book in the Rise of the Arcanist serial series. Because it is a serial book it is shorter than you may be expecting from a book, but don’t let that fool you. This packs a punch and hits all the requirements needed for a good read.
The characters are some of my favourites ever, and while I hate seeing them in danger I LOVE the action. This book is packed with action, mystery, love, friendship and betrayal. This is the reason I was able to devour this in one sitting, and the reason why I instantly pre-ordered the second in the series which releases next month.
This is a fantastic story about magic that was very surprising and a very good listen with the narrator really bringing out the feelings and personalities of the characters
Received as an audio review copy narrated by Sarah Hutchton, this is an honest review. This is just an amazing story populated with people possessing the abilities to turn into animals or control the natural world; and for Jen Maddox, she is only just wrapping her head around it. By embracing her magic skills there are loses of the life she’s known but despite it, Jen finds a new “family” guiding her to find a place in the world where magic is a weapon as it’s a protector. Sarah Hutchton gorgeously transports you into the brilliant world this author has crafted that keep you coming back to listen to over and over again. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed the story. It had great characters & a good plot. I have not read books 1 – 3 so I am picking up in the spin off series. Magics are vanishing without a trace. Jenn Maddox works for the Magical Enforcement Agency. She tries to unravel the mystery. So many twists and turns it will keep you turning pages.
This is the first installment in the Rise of the Arcanist series of new adult urban fantasy by Elizabeth Kirke. Part of the mystery is solved in this volume, but you’ll need to read the entire six-volume serial if you want a complete resolution. This is a spin-off of the More than Magic series, and you will miss out on some of the character history and world building if you haven’t read that series, but the author provides enough explanation that you can still follow this story.
This story introduces an intriguing mystery involving magical creatures disappearing from a park. I loved the portrayal of diverse paranormal creatures and the unique mythology developed for them. I liked the characters, who are all smart, resourceful, and quirky.
This is basically a police procedural, where all of the police are paranormal. I love that running computer reports and analyzing data was an important part of the investigation. The action scenes were suspenseful and kept me reading to find out what would happen next. The tense moments are broken up with humorous exchanges between the characters, who are clearly a tight-knit group.
I enjoyed the narration by Starla Huchton. Her pace was a bit slow, but that allowed me to catch little details of the story that I might have missed otherwise. She is easy to understand, and I loved her distinctive character voices during dialogs. The one downside is that the story is told from multiple characters’ point of view, and she uses the same narrative voice regardless of which character is narrating. That was confusing, and made it difficult at times to follow who was thinking.
I own the Kindle book but was given a free copy of this audiobook by the author; I volunteered to provide an honest review.
The narrator did a great job of bringing this story to life. The author did a good job with both the character work and the story line. I enjoyed listening to this story.
I received an arc of this audiobook and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
this one is a spin off (which you really don’t need to read but in my opinion if you do) Jen is now an intern at MES and is looking into people missing which leads to coverups.
The book reads like a slice of life. You get a view into the life of a group of supernaturals working for an investigative organization.
The book left me very confused. I think part of it, was because this was the first book I have read by this author. I wish that it would have started with a description of the world and organization it took place in, and who the characters were. The fact that I started out with the audio version also added to the confusion. The narrator wasn’t very good at differentiate between the different characters, and at pointing out, when a chapter started with the view of a new character. This made me confused as to who’s point of view I was listening too. About half way through the book I switched to the ebook version, which made it easier to follow along. I think I would have enjoyed the book more, if this was a world I was familiar with, so I will recommend that anyone wanting to read the books, start out with one of the previous books, even though this one states that it’s the first in a series. It might be the first in this series, but it’s not the first in this world. I got the audio version for free, and borrowed the ebook version on kindle KU. I am now leaving a voluntary review of both.
To be completely honest, I did NOT read the entire book. I read up to 30% and I was totally bored, but that’s where they were just hit with blood magic. The blood magic interested me, so I started skimming pages to see if it captured my attention. It did not. Even in the first 30%, I was getting confused as to who was what. This one’s just not for me.
I haven’t read this author before, so I’m not familiar with the previous series. Even though it stands alone I feel like I walked into the middle of a story and it took me quite some time to get all the character sorted in my head. Having each chapter written first person and each different I was overwhelmed. It’s probably not a series I will continue with, I just couldn’t find a connection. I’m glad it has a lot of wonderful reviews, each reader has their opinion and love of stories.
Wow, wow, wow!
I was late to the More than Magic party, so these characters where still really fresh in my mind. That being said this is 5 years later, so you really DON’T have to read the MTM series. I do recommend it though, because well, it’s awesome.
Back to THIS book. Miss Kirke killed it. There was just enough back story without rehashing everything. So much mystery and suspense. Then the ending. UGH! Thank goodness these are being released every month until the end.
I haven’t read this author before and although there are lots of references to another series you don’t have to read it to understand what’s going on here, but it would help to know the characters better. People are disappearing and now it’s up to them to find out why. Of course it’s never simple so we have plenty of action to help us get there. There really isn’t a main character but the team as a whole work well together and through team work they will survive. Plenty of action and reason to go on with the series. Love the characters and how they interact, magic, shifters it’s got it all. Can’t wait to read more of this author and the next book in the series because even though one part of the mystery has been solved there is more to come.
