“A literate exploration of why we use—or mangle—our native tongue.”—USA Today Bill Bryson celebrates America’s magnificent offspring in the book that reveals once and for all how a dusty western hamlet with neither woods nor holly came to be known as Hollywood…and exactly why Mr. Yankee Doodle call his befeathered cap “Macaroni.”
Always wonderful Bryson!
Really good read. Hilarious and so very true and factual.
As much a history commentary as a discussion of words. Interesting – but I was more impressed by Bill Bryant’s Dictionary for Writers and Editors – the only dictionary I’ve read completely from beginning to end.
learning on every page. Very worthwhile.
Good,, haven’t finished it yet
He is always a good read
The little known origins and anecdotes surrounding the words of American English are offered up in an irresistible smorgasbord of information.
Enjoyed this, but it is a-bit dated.
Every Bill Bryson book is great. This book really made the naming of our country come alive.
Not one of his better books
Everything Bill Bryson writes is brilliant!
