Three Book Boxed Set – Perfect! Having read these wonderful stories several years ago, I took advantage of a special offer to re-read these three books all in one sitting. Thorn, ex-Special Forces, now custom motorcycle shop owner; Del, now the Sheriff of Burnt River; and, Boone who chose to remain on the family ranch, with the help of his brothers. I smiled and loved the dedication of these men; I cried my eyes out at disasters that came their way; and, I loved the romance these men found. There are special people like Tyler and Carly that make these books even more special in every way. It’s great writing, excellent story-lines and amazing characters.
The Macklins of Burnt River Trilogy by Shirleen Davies is a fun read. The oldest of the 3 Macklin brothers, Thorn is the hero in the 1st story. After the death of a beloved high school teacher, Thorn leaves his position with the Army Special Ops Unit and returns to his hometown to open a custom motorcycle shop with 2 of his pals. He’s never forgotten his high school sweetheart, Grace, or how she disappeared from his life right after graduation. Much to his surprise, Grace has also returned to town and works alongside her father in his outdoor company. Grace has never forgotten Thorn, either, and always believed he walked out on her, ditching the plans they made for a life together, until a talk with her father reveals the truth. As Thorn and Grace navigate a path back to the love they once shared, trust doesn’t come easy, and with Thorn still having a lot of questions, Grace is uneasy in sharing the answers.
Del Macklin is the hero in the 2nd story. He’s the local sheriff, and like his brother, has never forgotten the girl who snagged his attention in high school. But Amy left town with her mother several years ago, and Del never quite understood why. Rumors abounded about Amy’s father, and now, as a police officer, Del is unraveling truth from fiction when Amy finds her way back to town and is a suspect in an apartment fire. Shy, quiet Amy has always liked Del. Problem was she believed he never noticed her. But none of that matters now as Amy tries to piece together if a car accident that took her mother’s life was indeed an accident or murder. Running into Del, she has little choice but to trust that as the sheriff he’ll help her solve the mystery. Trusting her heart to him is a whole different matter.
Boone Macklin has kept the family ranch running since the death of his parents. In his personal life, he’s known as the town playboy. An old friend from school surfaces, and Boone learns she is a single mom who doesn’t have long to live. He takes her situation to heart and adopts her son, and when former child mate Willow catches his eye, Boone remembers a time when he loved Willow and handled their relationship wrong. Still smarting from what should have been, Boone sets out to win Willow’s heart while learning the rope of parenthood.
This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Davies and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Light-hearted stories intertwined with mystery, old high school flames, and real-life situations that tug at the reader’s heartstrings; the Macklin brothers are sweet, caring, and sexy, with just enough bad-boy in them that you can’t help but root for the heroines to step in and tame them. Grace, Amy and Willow bring their own heartbreak and mystery to each story, and watching them find the inner strength to go after what they want without being snotty is a plus. Each could easily be your BFF.
I recommend you add the Macklins of Burnt River to your reading list.
