With a new foreword: The New York Times–bestselling biography of President Lyndon Johnson from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Team of Rivals. Featuring a 2018 foreword by the Pulitzer Prize–winning political historian that celebrates a reappraisal of Lyndon Johnson’s legacy five decades after his presidency, from the vantage point of our current, profoundly altered political culture and … altered political culture and climate, Doris Kearns Goodwin’s extraordinary and insightful biography draws from meticulous research in addition to the author’s time spent working at the White House from 1967 to 1969. After Johnson’s term ended, Goodwin remained his confidante and assisted in the preparation of his memoir. In Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, she traces the 36th president’s life from childhood to his early days in politics, and from his leadership of the Senate to his presidency, analyzing his dramatic years in the White House, including both his historic domestic triumphs and his failures in Vietnam.
Drawing on personal anecdotes and candid conversation with Johnson, Goodwin paints a rich and complicated portrait of one of our nation’s most compelling politicians in “the most penetrating, fascinating political biography I have ever read” (The New York Times).

The first really good bio of a president based on extensive interviews with LBJ. Kearns (now Kearns-Goodwin)no doubt received help from Dick Goodwin who was speechwriter to JFK and knew that era from the inside, but is LBJ’s remarks that are best for his character and complexities.
Great insight to LBJ. I enjoy the writing style and content of the author
Kerns is an outstanding author/historian

I never knew a President could be such a dirt bag.
LYNDON JOHNSON AND AMERICAN DREAM IS AN OXYMORON !!
Having lived through these years, I have come away with an ” insider’s” perspective on why Johnson behaved the way he did. This shaped American government and politics, and ultimately the lives of millions of Americans, ans still does to this day. Fascinating!
very readable; a very positive look at him and his accompishments. you may change your perception of him, It definitely changed my assessment.
Great overview of a complicated man.
Really shows all of LBJ – the good, the bad and the ugly. I gained great insight into this complicated man and his impact on America. Would recommend for anyone interested in history or politics.
Insights into significant character and his powerful personality and life
Very in-depth. Takes you inside LBJ’s mindset during key decision making.
Even though this was written by one of my favorite authors, I had a hard time getting into this book. Thought President Johnson did not come across in a very good light, which confirmed a previous opinion of him.
Excellent and informative
historical truthful
For the history buff abd devotee of LBJ and D Goodwin
I thought Goodwin’s insights into LBJ were excellent and they helped me understand him and his era better.
