A Contemporary Sci-Fi, Techno-Thriller, by Salvador Mercer, Author of the Claire-Agon Fantasy World Books. When a Chinese rover discovers an alien technology on the dark side of the moon, it is up to Richard ‘Rock’ Crandon and his NASA team of scientists and engineers to devise a way to return before the Chinese and Russians.Forced to deal with bureaucratic oversight and a complex team of … complex team of personalities, Rock Crandon pushes his team to their limits.
With pressure mounting, the world is pushed closer to conflict and war as the NASA team finds itself seriously behind in the newly initiated space race. The future of mankind, its ideological and technological advances are at stake, as the world’s super powers race to discover what lies on the dark side of the moon.
Who will get there first, and at what cost?

Author’s note:
Many people use the phrase “the dark side of the moon” to describe something mysterious and unknown. The dark side of the moon is supposed to be the side we never see, the side that faces away from Earth. This side of the moon faces the cold, black expanse of space. What could be on this side of the moon? (As taken from “science.howstuffworks.com/dark-side-of-moon.htm”
Dark side is used as a literary term and a metaphor for the alien’s artifact and intent. Any similarity to any popular album by any group is purely coincidental.

I have a bad habit of not finishing a book when I think it will be utterly predictable. That was almost the case with ‘Lunar Discovery:Let the Space Race Begin’ by Salvador Mercer. I would have missed out on a great story! Mercer takes the world as it exists today, jumps a few years into the future, and builds a thoroughly enjoyable and suspenseful tale based on real-world technology, character-types, and scenarios. An alien device is detected on Earth’s moon, and a race begins between the world’s superpowers to reach it first and claim it for their own. The characters are believable, likable (for the most part), and engaging. The scenarios he posits are realistic, even likely. He builds suspense throughout the book to the climax. The ending is satisfying and the solution original. The science is well-presented so that even the layman can follow it. If you enjoy ‘hard’ science fiction set in the 21st century, you’ll enjoy this book. I will happily read more of the author’s work.
A very good representation of what would likely happen under such conditions.
Excellent space race story with good ending.
Interesting theme and characters. Enjoyed the book.
A happy ending is good.
If you are looking for hard technical sci-fi… this is not your book. However if near real-time adventure with a hint of aliens then read on.
I am not a fanaticical S/F reader but I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. the plot was well constructed and held my attention. I found it was a really good read and would recommend this book to anyone.
Building a foundation for increased character development, leading to great inter – personal relationships.
A very good read
In the near future a first contact event leads to a space race.
A very good read, great story
Nothing original here, but competently written.
Great story ripped from the headlines. It could be true. Great characters and a good ending. I highly recommended this book. There are 2 more in the series but this book stands alone.
It seemed strange that the three nations with space programs would compete rather than work together over Alien technology. But it made for a good story.
Near future sci-fi. Easily believable.
There was too much detail about how to get to the moon and not enough about the artifact that was on it. It was really boring to me, so I skipped to the end to see if it would be worthwhile to read. In my opinion, it wasn’t. On the other hand, my brother would probably like this book because of all the engineering talk.
Boring. It’s mostly conversations. Nothing is going on.
Too heavy in the scientific background. Too long and drawn out. I tried but finally just stopped reading.
Good guys start last. After overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, good guys finally arrive at destination, save bad guys and help others. Fairly predictable but that doesn’t diminish its readability.
well thought out plot & world. very enjoyable to read
