She was only curious…Cori has always been a bit on the strange side, but when a gate to Hell—literally—pops up in her backyard, she tumbles down, down, down in to a place filled with beasts waiting to reap her soul for the Devil himself. Lucky for Cori, she meets Rigel and his gang of misfits who have been trapped for quite a bit. Together, they must formulate a plan to escape, or risk … escape, or risk remaining down below for all eternity and burning forevermore.
Perfect for fans of Labyrinth and The Gate. Lullaby of Flames is the first story in a series of addicting stand alone short tales that you don’t want to miss.

Cori is your typical teenager who’s struggling with making friends at school, wishes she could be more like her TV idols, and loves music. One day, while strumming along on her guitar, something weird happens outside her house… before long, she’s plummeting to the depths of hell. That’s when her troubles actually begin!
Lullaby of Flames is a short story by Candace Robinson due out just as 2020 approaches. I was able to snag an early copy and enjoyed this one immensely. Not only are we treated to the hilarious mind of the main character and the author, but we get to know a few other seemingly innocent young folks stuck trying to find their way out of the Devil’s grasp. Playing on some stories we’ve read from the Bible regarding Adam, Eve, the apple, and Lilith… we learn things aren’t what they appear. Lilith can help Cori escape, but one by one, many of Cori’s merry gang of new friends begins to drop off the face of the… well, it’s not quite Earth, is it?
Robinson twists what we know, adds in a few crazy moments, and tickles us with some humor. toss in a few suspenseful moments, a worry that Cori won’t make it, and a surprise or two in the ending, you’ve got a little re-appropriation of a classic. It’ll take you less than an hour, costs less than a dollar, and will make you smile and cock your head a few times. Did that really happen? Hmm… I wonder if we’ll get to meet Cori again, that is, if she actually survives what’s about to consume her near the very end! Kudos for a well-written short story to show off the author’s writing chops.
Lullaby of Flames is a short story by Candace Robinson. It’s short enough to read in one sitting. The book kept my interest. But, the ending left me wanting to know what happens next. I think Candace could make this a great book or series.
A unique short story with lots of action, twists, turns and surprises. Written skillfully, with originality and imagery that pulls you in and doesn’t let you go until the end.
I had so much fun reading this short horror story. I honestly could NOT put it down. I love Cori and Rigel.
A fun adventure in Hell! I love when books are set in the Underworld! It’s a favorite of mine; love the demons and fire! Cori is a quirky girl; beat of her own drum type of girl. Some how she ends up falling into the Underworld; she’s trapped, but luckily she’s not alone. There’s Rigel; he’s a sweetie, and a few other ladies trapped down there; each from a different time. Cori and the others try to find a way out of there, but it’s definitely not easy. Cori is in for more than she could’ve ever expected. Entertaining story the whole way through!
I went in completely blind on this short story, which is how I prefer to experience a story to be honest, so I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t expect our teenage lead, Cori, to fall down a pit into Hell.
This story took a number of unexpected twists and turns, and had a number of characters I really enjoyed, such as Rigel and Lilith. Cori was great from beginning to end though despite her big mistake, and speaking of, wow this ending!
Candace Robinson’s stories are always so creative and this was no exception. I seriously don’t know how she dreams up these stories, but I’m here for them!
This is a great read for fans of the 80s films of Legend or Labyrinth! Especially if you enjoy being taken by surprise.
My Rating: 5/5 stars… that ending!
Lullaby of Flames is a twisted tale that yet again shows off this author’s amazing ability of being able to take a story we know well and making it her own. Many different things you’ll recognise are weaved into the magic she creates and her stories always flow so seamlessly. I love how this author’s mind works and her unique storytelling has me excited for each book she releases. Lullaby of Flames needs to be included in a collection of short stories that I think this author should write. I’d love to see what other stories she could take and twist to showcase her amazing talent. This short story has left me craving for more.
*I voluntarily reviewed an advance complimentary copy of this book
