Lucky Me by Kathryn Shay is the third book in The Lucky Lady Casino series. It is a love story between two people who come from different lives and finding each other in spite of it.
Cy Conklin is the head of security at the casino where Stacey and Sammy Steele like to spend time together gambling and catching up when she is in town. Cy and Sammy connected right off because of their military backgrounds and Cy couldn’t help being attracted to Stacey, but that is never going to happen because Cy thinks that she is way out of his league.
When circumstances change and they find themselves spending more time together, Cy and Stacey’s relationship changes in more ways than they ever expected.
I’m looking forward to reading more books in this wonderful series!
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
Lucky Me is my favorite novelette in this series so far. I’m intrigued by the casino romances and Cy and Stacey’s heartfelt, growing relationship will not disappoint the reader. I found it refreshing to not have to learn about so many different characters as well. After reading Kathryn Shaw’s letter to the readers concerning her close relationship to her late sister and how they visited casinos as a routine “sisterly” adventure, I can appreciate this casino series even more. I would have enjoyed reading Cy “rocked” Stacey’s world before the story ended!!
This is the third short story in the Lady Luck Casino series. This story focuses on Cy, the head of security at the casino and visitors Stacey and her twin brother Sammie. Stacey comes home for the weekends taking care of her brother, who suffers from PTSD and make Friday evening visits to the casino where she gets to know Cy. Cy has many insecurities but after getting to know Stacey, tries to overcome them.
I took the story on the line of Beauty and the Beast, it’s what’s inside your heart is what matters! This is a quick read but a packed full story that you can read in one sitting. Is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is the third book in Kathryn Shay’s “Lucky Lady Casino Short Stories” series. It is loosely based on two stories – Cyrano de Bergerac and Beauty and the Beast.
Stacey Steele is a model who comes to the casino twice a month with her twin brother Sammy
Cy Conklin is in charge of the security at the casino. He considers himself ugly because he has a big nose. He certainly does not believe he is worthy of someone as beautiful and as successful as Stacey.
Even though this is a short story, the author creates complex three-dimensional characters. They all have had to face obstacles that have prevented them from reaching their dreams.
This book may have a simple plot, but it is filled with complex characters and a lot of heart!

Lucky Me is the third short story in ‘The Lucky Lady Casino Short Stories’ series. This story revolves around the lives of Cy Conklin, Stacey Steele and her twin brother Sammy Steele. Cy is the security manager at the Lucky Lady Casino. Stacey and Sammy are frequent visitors to the casino, usually visiting bi-monthly. We soon learn that Sammy suffers from PTSD and Stacey is a New York super model. Both siblings have befriended Cy. Cy has a negative self image and feels that even though he is crushing big time for Stacey, he is not good enough for her romantically. Cy, having prior military experience, relates to Sammy and the story begins with Cy helping Sam when he has an attack while at the casino.
From this small introduction – I was sucked into the lives of these three people and wanted to know where the story would go. This is crucial as it takes a well written short story to grab me and never let me go, at least until it has all been read!
As the story continues, the lives of the three become more intertwined. I will not say more as I think each reader should experience this story for themselves. However, I will say there was some interesting side journey’s where Stacey has major decisions to make on more than one front. I really appreciated how she handled herself… and the outcome. It was gratifying to see Cy’s generosity towards another vet and where his small but crucial help played out for the better for Sam. And Cy – wonderful to see his big heart at play. We must not forget the trials and tribulations that may not end for a vet once they are back home. Nor must we forget the in-saneness that is the modelling world.
The story was fast paced and totally complete. At the end of the story I was satisfied how everything came together. I was able to experience a number of emotions, root for various scenarios to come to fruition and most important… be taken away by the storytelling for a little while. All really good things when I read.
I look forward to reading the remainder of this series.
The books in the Lucky Lady series are short stories or vignettes of the individuals that either work in the casino or are patrons of the casino. All somehow interconnected .
This time it’s Cy’s and Stacey’s story. Cy is the security manager of the casino and Stacey, with her twin brother, are patrons that visit the casino every couple of weeks.
She’s a model and Cy, though attracted to her, considers himself a sort of Cyrano de Bergerac.
This is a story that at times reminds us of the effects of war on the troops. At other, it’s about body image created or perceived.
All in all , an entertaining short story for an afternoon of leisure in which you get to “visit” some of the characters of the casino.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
