Everyone Has a Hidden Talent
For Lucky O’Toole it’s murder…solving it.
Surviving in Sin City takes cunning, a pair of five-inch heels, and a wiseass attitude. Lucky has mastered them all and has a pair of legs she uses to kick butt and turn heads.
As the Chief Problem Solver for the Babylon, Las Vegas’s most over-the-top destination, mischief is in her job description.
She’s good at her job.
She’s less good at life. But who has time for a life when there’s a killer on the loose?
Light, funny, romantic mysteries providing a Vegas escape appropriate for anyone looking for a good laugh.
AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBORAH COONTS
Why did you decide to write humor?
I’m not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky, books, specifically to Lucky’s own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I’ve found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good—or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her.
The Lucky O’Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design?
When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works.

Great characters! This is a double book continuation of Debra Coonts’s first book but can be read as stand alone novellas. Lucky is head of public relations at a casino in Las Vegas. She is in charge of minimizing any bad press for the casino and the 1st book opens with a person being thrown out of a helicopter owned by the casino into the casino’s pond in the middle of a pirate show. (not exactly good public relatIons for the casino) also in the 1st book we are introduced to her best friend who is a female impressionist (later becomes her lover), her boss (who secretly is her father) and her mother (who is a whorehouse madam in a nearby town).
The 2nd book deals with a reality TV contest being held at the Casino and the various contestants. Needless to say, all is not as simple as it looks at the beginning and it turns into a publicity nightmare for Lucky. Very entertaining & light reading. Would love to find continuing books in the series.
I have enjoyed reading about Lucky O’Toole and all the situations that arise throughout her long days at the Babylon. In addition to the daily fires she puts out all over the hotel she manages to solve murders as part of a normal day. I love her mom Mona. I enjoy all her regular characters almost as much as Stephanie Plum’s regulars in Janet Evanovitch novels. Keep them coming !
My intro to the LUCKY series. Fantastic! Love this character & can’t wait to read more.
Love the Lucky series.
Nice for a “quick” read – entertaining!
Two great stories; interesting and unusual characters.
I read this one and another of the series. Really enjoyable reading.
A fun series to replace Janet Evanovich, who has become repetitive. This may not last, but so far it is fun and entertaining.
I love this whole series. Lucky O’Toole is an interesting main character and her loves are all delicious. The setting of Las Vegas makes the series even more interesting. Read all 9 books in the series and sad that there are no more.
Debra Coonts strikes the perfect balance between character and plot development, suspense and comic/witty relief, grit and romance, and reality and fantasy in a Las Vegas setting known for the latter. Lucky O’Toole and her female employees and relatives will strike a responsive chord in the hearts of any woman of any age who has, by choice or necessity, found herself having to face and do more that she wants to meet her own expectations as well as those of others. The only difference is that, if Lucky or those she cares about become overwhelmed and have a moment to spare, they can take advantage of all the perks a luxury casino has to offer. Often at greatly reduced rates. But rather than feel envious, I found it fun to tag along for the ride. As far as Mr. Right goes, these two books give that concept a balanced but unpredictable twist too.
It’s also another book I enjoyed that made me wish BookBub had a “Satisfactory Ending” in its list of ratings. Like all books in a series except for the very last one, there’s never a “Happily Ever After,” and sometimes not even then. But there are endings that satisfactorily resolve the bulk of the critical plot elements that the reader is content.
Because of all this, these are two books I’ve added to my list of those to reread when I’m too tired from dealing with real life events to risk disappointment.
An excellent story line. Captivating and entertaining.
