A retiring K9 Tophat was accidentally sent to Canada in a batch of rescue dogs and Lucas agrees to look for him during a visit to his sister (who leaves near to his ex-fiancee too). However, he finds that he was handed over to a trainer who deals with aggressive dogs and when he arrives at the property he finds himself in the brutal world of dogfighting. Tanya used to share her flat with her two best friends but one has been killed in a hit-and-run and one is badly injured and in a coma. As part of re-evaluating her life, she realised how much she had missed – including Lucas. So seeing him there again has completely flipped her world. As Lucas tries to find Tophat the dogfighting world starts to protect their own.
This was both a heartbreaking story with all the danger and abuse that the dogs were going through but heartwarming as well as Lucas fought to do the best he could for them ensuring they had medical attention and freedom. It was also sweet to see how Lucas and Tanya worked to resolve their differences talking through everything that had happened and trying to keep each other alive in the face of such sustained attacks from the dogfighting world. Well written and very enjoyable it was a charming story with a HEA at the end. You did not have to read the previous books in the series.
What a story! Volunteering to check on missing war dog, Top Hat, gave Lucas a welcome opportunity to visit his sister Meg, who had married the son of a farmer in Medicine Hat, not too far from Saskatchewan, Canada. Top Hat was at risk because he had been wounded in action and then attacked by a pack of wolves while waiting for help. Deemed by his adopter to have an unsafe temperament, he was turned over to a local rescue. Lucas, who himself suffered from back injuries and had lost a few ribs in an accident, could tell from the photo that Top Hat was intelligent and not so much out of control as suffering from PTSD.
Planning to leave for the Fur & Feathers rescue the morning after his arrival at Meg’s, Lucas didn’t count on hearing from his ex-fiancée, Tanya. The two had split up over his desire to have a family and hers not to after having spent her teen years raising six siblings. Tanya’s life had taken several bad turns recently as she had lost her career position over an error that wasn’t hers, and her two best friends had been taken from her, one dead and the other left in a coma after being hit by a car. When Lucas accepts Tanya’s offer to drive with him to pick up Top Hat, they embark on a journey that left me as the reader alternately hopeful and hopeless over the events and deceptions and threats they encounter. Wow, what an emotional trip! As a lifelong lover of rescued dogs, I absolutely love this series.

I impatiently wait for the books in this series as I love the story lines and I love that the books center around war dogs who have been released from military duty for one reason or another. In this book, Top Hat is the dog and I fell in love with him as I have with every dog in this series. I loved the interaction between Tanya and Lucas and how they put aside everything to search for Top Hat. I did not like reading about the dog fighting rings but know that they do exist and this story opened my eyes to how it happens and how the dogs are treated. I hated that the dogs are abused but again, I know this is happening in our everyday lives yet most people are not aware of how often it does happen. Dale really hit the nail on the head with this story and made me more aware of this situation. I loved reading this book and could not put it down as it pulled me in from the start and I sure did not want to put the book down to deal with everyday life. If you love dogs, and action and suspense you will love this book. Waiting impatiently for the next book in the series!..

Lucas is sent to Canada to find a Military dog, who was sent up with some rescue dogs. Top Hat was not meant to be part of this group. Luckily Lucas has family up there, so it made sense to send him. But also up there is his Sister’s best friend and his former fiancee Tanya. A lot of bad stuff happens to Top Hat, he’s been taken but a dog fighting ring, that is causing problems. Tanya meanwhile, is not living a life, there is something going on surrounding her and her friends and things escalate for her too. I think this was my favorite K-9 story from Dale!
Another ex SEAL finds the one and this time it’s a past fiancée and all about second chances. Lucas and Tanya broke up because of differences but they still love each other very much and still both hold out hope that they will be together again. When Lucas is sent to Canada to look for Tophat, a K9 who was mixed up with other dogs, he encounters Tanya and the two set out on a road trip and finally have a chance to get closure…or do they.
A great read with some steam, some action and suspense and second chances. These two were it for each other and I liked the way they work through their problems and are open and honest. I also liked that neither were with anyone else and never fell out of love. Their journey has some twists and turns and I liked the action on the farm…can’t wait for the next one.

Another K9 is missing. This time it is Top Hat who has been shipped in error to Canada. As Lucas has family living there he is tasked with looking for him.
He finds much more than he bargained for when he arrives at his sisters home. Lots of action, an old romance, dog fighting and mystery to be solved as well as finding Top Hat.
This is once again an excellent story, well written and extremely enjoyable.
If you’ve read the SEALs of Steel series you’ll recognize the guys doing the match ups for the K9s. Geir, Badger and Jager discuss who they’re going to ask to find TopHat in the prologue, and actually compare themselves to Levi and Mason from the Heroes from Hire and SEALs of Honor Series respectively and their matchmaking skills. That had me giggling.
Lucas Scott is the one they bring in and he agrees right away. He decides that at the very least he’d have a good visit with his sister and maybe even get some sort of closure on his relationship with his ex Tanya.
Now Tanya has gone through a lot recently, she lost her job over something that she didn’t do and was exonerated. One of her best friends was kidnapped and murdered and Alice the other part of the ‘Three Muscateers’ was in an accident resulting in her being in a coma. She’s been thinking about Jake and how they broke up and when she hears from his sister Meg he’s coming home for a visit and to find a dog, she wants to see him.
She wasn’t sure he’d even talk to her, but when he does, she volunteers to go with him to the shelter that has Top Hat. A rather long round trip, with some interesting conversation.
Of course it couldn’t be as simple as getting to the shelter and picking up the dog, apparently they moved him to a trainer who could handle him better without notifying Lucas. Where he had escaped from his cage. What happens next puts Tanya and Lucas in the middle of the horrible sport of dog fighting and trying to stop the rings.
Hold your breath scenes as things come together and they find Top Hat. A rekindling of romance, a loving protective dog, family and mysteries solved.
I love this series, the avenues to find these ‘misplaced’ Military Dogs have been exciting, dangerous, romantic and suspenseful. I can’t wait to read the next book!
Yay!
I just love these K-9 stories! They tend to pull the heart strings a little more than the other stories and they can get quite emotional at times too!
I love how fiercely Lucas searches for TopHat and his determination to stop the entire dog fighting practice all around the area including the small community where they find the War Dog. Dog fighting is an ugly pastime that I can’t even begin to understand the sense of. How can anyone find any kind of thrill or enjoyment hurting a dog let alone watch one dog tear apart another, all for money.
I found myself getting agitated while reading about the many dogs being held. I was silently urging Lucas to hurry and find these poor, helpless souls. I also felt empathy for Tanya’s grudge against her mother for her lost childhood. The one thing she gained was the knowledge brought by being forced to learn how to care for a home and young children.
This story is jam-packed with emotion and satisfaction of doing the right thing for the numerous, helpless animals. I enjoyed the bully being taken down and the successful outcome of this adventure!
I loved it!
Dale Mayer has a way of reminding us of ongoing issues by telling a story about people who are brave enough to fight these problems.
OK, so the Navy Seals are amazing, the K9 dogs are special as well and the combo defending each other is something to see.
Lucas (Navy Seal) has volunteered to go to Canada to search for Tophat a missing retired K9. Lucas has additional reasons for returning to Canada as his sister and her family live there as does his ex-fiance, Tanya. Lucas and Tanya parted ways as their ideas about raising a family didn’t match well. Now Tanya has lost two roommates, one killed in a hit and run and the other in a coma after being badly injured in a separate incident. Tanya at the same time had issues at work forcing her out. All this has made her wonder about life choices and why these things have all happened so closely together.
Meanwhile Tophat has been given to a trainer with questionable ulterior motives possibly bringing in the scary world of dog fighting. Tophat escapes his prison and Lucas arrives to put all the pieces together and protect the ones he loves while accomplishing this.
Once again, well done Dale Mayer!
This is the first time I have read a story by this author and felt an underlying theme of hopelessness. Lucas is going to Canada to visit his sister and also try to find a missing War Dog. He has no idea where to begin looking for Top Hat the K9. He hoped he didn’t run into his ex-fiancee, Tanya, while looking for the dog because he still loves Tanya. Thankfully I continued reading and I hope you will also. It’s a great story.

This latest book in the K9 Files sees Lucas going back home to Canada to find Tophat, a missing K9 dog who was accidentally sent to Canada. It helps that Lucas has family in Canada, although there is also an ex-fiancee there too. As Lucas tracks down what has happened to Tophat, he finds out a dogfighting ring spanning multiple cities.
He also reconnects with his ex, Tanya. As they spend time together, he learns of her being disgraced at work (even though she was innocent), the death of one of her roommates and the other one being in the hospital.
There was more action in this book that the previous ones in this series, and the suspense of who was/wasn’t involved in the dogfighting (including some cops). Wish there would have been a little more romance woven into the story.
Absolutely Outstanding .
I really enjoyed reading Lucas . This is book five in The K9 Files . Lucas is sent to Canada to search for and hopefully find Tophat a military war dog that was mistakenly sent there . Lucas has family and his ex Tanya there . Soon Lucas and Tanya find themselves knee deep into an illegal dogfighting ring . Those involved come calling . This story is fantastic , suspenseful , and Intriguing , very intense . So action packed throw in some romance , outstanding . I highly recommend taking the time to read and enjoy .
I am a fan of our deployed and a huge advocate for Dog rescue. All 3 of my dogs are rescues. That being said I was so on board with this K9 War Dog series. It makes one think even though the author does her best to make it a story of fiction and not assign blame anywhere. Dog fighting is atrocious. This was handled gently. Facts were provided of the nature of dog fights and possible end results, but its more about man kind being the evil perpetrator. Lucas goes to Canada where his sister and his ex girlfriend lives to locate TopHat a warrior K9. TopHat goes from one rescue group, to another, to a third that handles aggressive dogs. Dog fighting is a huge business in this area and shady dealings come to light. Unfortunately along with some shady cops, which sadly makes sense. He ends up connecting with his ex girlfriend Tanya, who is still good friends with his sister Meg, and they go on this endeavor together. There is murder and a hit run that take place before hand which land Tanya in a precarious position. The back story provided for Tanya explains a lot and Lucas patience and understanding is enviable. A serious subject handled as a gentle reminder to the viciousness of man. Thank you for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were unsolicited.
I was kindly provided this book as an ARC; in exchange for my honest review. This is book 5 of 6 (so far) in The K9 Files series. This book centers around Lucas and Tanya; and TopHat The K9.
Tophat is one of the missing war dogs that Lucas has been assigned to locate. Tophat was erroneously/accidentally sent to Canada with a group of rescue dogs looking for adoption.
Upon arrival at the rescue organization Lucas discovers that Tophat was deemed “aggressive” and given to a trainer who deals with aggressive dogs.
Upon learning of this additional mishap Lucas is suspicious of the situation; and even more so after arriving at the trainer’s property and discovering Tophat had “escaped.”
Lucas and his ex-fiancé Tanya are suddenly in the middle of a horrible dogfighting ring.
This is NOT a romance, but follows a suspense/mystery format. There is zero profanity and sexy-times. Heat level zero. Violence and action level a 4.5 out of 10 (ten being the worst.) and violence is not graphic. This is a fairly decent series that is loosely linked to Ms. Dale’s SEALs Of Steel series.
Tophat is also not aggressive as claimed (*spoiler), but he’s still a pretty bad-a$$ doggie.
Not a “page-burner”, But is a well written, fast and easy-read; which can truthfully (in my opinion) be read by teens (14+) and adults.

Breaking up a Dog Fighting Ring…Since Lucas, a medically discharged former SEAL, has family in Canada where a war dog was accidentally shipped, he has agreed to find the dog. When Tanya, his ex-fiancé hears that he is in Canada and looking for the dog, she asks if she can accompany him. They soon realize that the dog is probably ensnared in a large dog fighting ring. As they try to keep the dog safe, Lucas and Tanya draw closer together. I received a free copy of this book from the author through Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a very suspenseful book, especially because it was hard for them to find people to trust. Dog fighting is a very brutal illegal sport and I didn’t realize the extent of it in some communities. Adding to the story is Tanya and Lucas’s relationship and how they resolved their past issues. This book is an excellent addition to the story.
Top Hat a war hero who returns home to a new life of a slower pace ends up in a new and different country, far far away from home. Lucas wants to fix this wrong to Top Hat but to do so means returning to face his past. A long over due visit to his sister’s and family, see Lucas and family celebrate Lucas return after all the challenges Lucas and has Lucas face to face with Tanya. Tanya has had her own challenges after losing a good friend and another is left laying in bed in hospital hanging onto life. Together Lucas and Tanya set out to find Top Hat. This story shows just how small the world is how 2 people past comes together, that are joined in more ways than they think and the start of a new family of 3. A strong love story.
This is book 5 in the K9 Files series and it features Lucas and Tanya. In this story Lucas is looking for a military working dog who was mistakenly taken to Canada, with other rescue dogs, to be put up for adoption. Lucas goes to a little town in Alberta where his sister lives as well as Tanya. Tanya is the love of his life and they broke up because he wanted children and she didn’t.
There was NO smooth flow to this story line at all. The adventure with TopHat was great. The interaction between Lucas and Tanya was just plain weird. There was ZERO romance. Even the intimate scene towards the end felt too scripted. There was nothing sexy or appealing about either character, which was surprising because this author writes pretty great military romance. I felt more romance between Meg and Nathan, who are minor characters. I am a fan of this author but in my honest opinion, this book was disappointing. Awesome cover!
Lucas is great.and the series is even better. I love the pairing of the dogs and the men. I am hoping to see a woman who has been injured be included in this series as well. So far Titanium is batting a 100 when it comes to finding these brave war dogs and the guys that handled them. The men sent to find out what happened to them are our brave and wonderful military, and they either adopt them or get them to their owners and finding their partners as well. I love this series. This one like the others is great and so different. Dale Mayer is a wonderful author with a head filled with wonderful stories that are entertaining and informative as well.

This is Top Hat’s story, the next war dog to be found. He’s in canada somewhere and Lucas is going to find him. His sister lives there so he can kill two birds with one stone. His old love happens to live there as well. It was a bad break up because he wanted children and she didn’t. But her bad luck with her losing job and her two girlfriends getting hurt, one killed and the other a hit and run. Plenty of action and a HEA. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am just in love with this series. I am a huge dog lover and this series about going in and finding lost war dogs and giving them a great life after their service to our country – just awesome. Your heartstrings get pulled about what the dogs went thru but throw in a sexy alpha male helping to rescue them just makes the story even better to read
