USA TODAY Bestseller andAGATHA AWARD Winner for Best First Novel FULL OF SIMMERING SUSPENSE AND INTRIGUE… “Imaginative, empathetic, genuine, and fun, Lowcountry Boil is a lowcountry delight.” – Carolyn Hart, Author of What the Cat Saw “It’s a simmering gumbo of a story full of spice, salt, heat and shrimp. She had me guessing, detouring for a few laughs then doubling back for another clue right … laughs then doubling back for another clue right until the last chapter.” – The Huffington Post
PI Liz Talbot is a modern Southern belle: she blesses hearts and takes names. She carries her Sig 9 in her Kate Spade handbag, and her golden retriever, Rhett, rides shotgun in her hybrid Escape. When her grandmother is murdered, Liz high-tails it back to her South Carolina island home to find the killer. But when her police-chief brother shuts her out of the investigation, she opens her own. Then her long-dead best friend pops in and things really get complicated. As more folks turn up dead, Liz must use more than just her wits and charm to keep her family safe, chase down clues from the hereafter, and catch a psychopath before he catches her.
Praise for LOWCOUNTRY BOIL:
“Plenty of secrets, long-simmering feuds, and greedy ventures make for a captivating read…Boyer’s chick lit PI debut charmingly showcases South Carolina island culture.” – Library Journal
“I love this book. And you will too. Witty, droll, clever–and just a tad quirky! This light-hearted and authentically Southern mystery is full of heart, insight, and a deep understanding of human nature. Susan M. Boyer is a fresh new voice in crime fiction!” – Hank Phillippi Ryan, Anthony, Agatha & Macavity Award-Winning Author of The Other Woman
“Pulls the reader in like the draw of a riptide with a keeps-you-guessing mystery full of romance, family intrigue, and the smell of salt marsh on the Charleston coast. A welcome visit home with people you want to know and, in some cases, are glad you aren’t related to. A fun summer read!”- Cathy Pickens, Author of the Southern Fried Mysteries and Charleston Mysteries
“Twisted humor has long been a tradition in Southern literature (maybe it’s the heat and humidity), and Boyer delivers it with both barrels. In lesser hands, all the hijinks could be distracting, but not in Lowcountry Boil. Boyer’s voice is so perky that no matter what looney mayhem her characters commit, we happily dive in with them. An original and delightful read.” – Betty Webb, Mystery Scene Magazine
“What do you get when you cross a Southern mystery, a ghost of a warning, a love triangle and a savvy protagonist who will stop at nothing? Easy, you get a page turning read–Lowcountry Boil.” – Donnell Ann Bell,Bestselling Author of The Past Came Hunting

The Liz Talbot Lowcountry mysteries are set in Charleston and the island of Stella Maris. Liz and her PI partner Nate solve cases with a little help from a spiritual guardian who pops in and out. The author’s descriptions of Charleston and its southern society are right on. Read the whole series!
I love this whole series.
Wonderful series!
I was up til 2 am reading this book, had to make myself put it down. Woke early the next morning to finish the book! This story makes you wish you were Liz Talbot! Now i am ready for the next one.
I really enjoyed the southern mystery. The author does a good job of setting this series up. I enjoyed the characters and background. The mystery and the solution were good. I am looking for word to reading more in this series. Enjoy
I really enjoyed my first Liz Talbot Mystery by Susan M. Boyer. “Lowcountry Boil” was such a fun, entertaining Southern mystery set on the coast of South Carolina. I loved the vivid descriptions from the beach to the charm of the town. Even the fast-action car chase had me at the edge of my seat. I can’t forget to mention the endearing ghost …
Liz Talbot is returning to her South Carolina home after the death of her beloved grandmother. Her brother Blake, the local police-chief, confides that the death is suspicious which leads Private Investigator Liz to move into her nearly inherited home. From the minute Liz and her dog Rhett arrive on the island the hunt is on for a killer, against …
I love this series!
I LOVE Stella Marris. I am moving there immediately. The setting of the island is a character in itself. Not to mention the quirky Talbot clan
More of a 3.5 rating. Good blend of human interest, mystery, action, and storytelling; set in one of my favorite places—the Lowcountry of coastal South Carolina. Not as great as some of my favorite Lowcountry authors, but it kept me engrossed, and I couldn’t figure out all of the whodunit’s way ahead of time.
Loved it!
I tend to run away from books that involve ghosts but something about this book caught my attention a few years ago. I finally picked it up on sale not long ago and I am happy to say that I really enjoyed how she portrayed Colleen the ‘Spirit’ and have already requested the 2nd book from my library. I look forward to see what’s in store for the …
Liked the heroine and subsidiary characters. The setting was unique and very appealing. The romance was low-keyed and left the reader anxious to read the next book to see what develops
Love this series. This book got me started! Each is a specific death or mystery to resolve and Liz has unfinished baggage with a man in her old home town, an ex, and now a business partner in the investigation business. Thoroughly entertaining and a wonderful escape with totally interesting people and their problems, not today’s.
This is such a fun read and the first book in this series! I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. Liz Talbot is a PI who solves cases with her “friend” Colleen. All this is based in the beautiful Charleston, SC area. What else do you need? More than just a cozy mystery. A few twists and turns and some humor too. Highly recommend. Read …
I’m finally getting around to this series! What took me so long: this first one is awesome! Loved the characters, the location, the mysteries, everything. A good bit of wit and humor had me laughing. And there’s even a ghost! Can’t wait to keep reading this series!
Highly entertaining
Enjoyed the characters. I’m a sucker for murder mysteries with a benevolent spirit. Had the pleasure of meeting Susan M. Boyer and discussing the Low Country series; she was gracious, open and funny.
Good main character reminiscent of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Milhone…easy to like. Fairly complex plot keeps you thinking about characters and motives. Lots of murder and mystery without grusome details. Fun read!
First in the series, and do entertaining. Luz is a P.I. and is helped in her cases by her best friend, Colleen, who often has insights Liz doesn’t, due to her being dead for many years!
The characters are well-developed, there is plenty of himor and a great plot. Add the beautiful Charleston locale, and you have the perfect beach read!
