We have all come across that one person at least once in our life. The homeless guy you may pass everyday on your way to work, you know the one, he yells to himself and those that pass him by. The quiet girl from highschool that kept to her herself and didn’t dress to the nine’s. The college kid on your dorm floor that no matter how hard you tried he/she was just so anti soical they were immediately put in that Ahole box. How about that annoying co-worker that everyone tries to stay clear of, cause if they catch you in the breakroom by the time you get back to your desk/office your coffee is like warm if you are lucky.
At times we are so quick to judge instead of just stepping back and looking and really listening not only to what they are saying but how they are saying it. I have been guilty of this a few times myself.
In a Lover’s Flood that is pretty much how this character is judge. Byhis interactions with his fellow classmates. He can seem so emotionless at times. He also gives off this I don’t care about anything or anyone vibe.
His only real connection he seems to have is with photos of some random guy off the internet that he has developed an unstable fasination with.
His family life is something he would rather not deal with and the thoughts of going back for a visit just increases his irrational side.
His mind is a jumbled mess and he is not sure when it all changed. He knows that he should care, he should have normal emotions and be able to smile.
It only takes a crack in the armor for everything to fall apart. For things to click into place.
For secrets to unravel, subconscious memories to be brought to the surface, to finally let go of the darkness inside that is determined to drag one under.
This is a powerful book, more so on the emotional and psychological side then the dark side. I cried, laughed and understood the depths in which his pysche went through. I loved the friends that stuck by his side and the stalker that never left him alone.
Unlike any other book I’ve ever read. It’s a look into the mind and how one copes to his reality. Brilliantly written!!
This book is deep, sad, thought provoking, and truly amazing! Despite this story not being a fun rom-com like most expect from Daryl Banner, I am unsurprised that he was able to write such a profound piece of work. The lack of names some how made the story feel more relatable. I could see myself in a lot of ways within the struggles and thoughts of our main character.
My first experience with Daryl Banner books was Raising Hell. It had some definite light hearted funny parts. But, it also tackled some more serious topics related to coping with life’s changes and tragedies.
This book deals with notably darker parts of the psyche. Though it still causes an occasional chuckle or bit of embarrassment it is just as good if not better than all his other books. This one feeling much like wandering through a labyrinth, never sure of the next turn or path that the main character would go down. Almost like an Alice in Wonderland we’re all mad here.. wandering and wondering what could possibly pop up in our way now?
Our nameless main character suffers from unfortunate family and past relationships issues, combined with trying to find his place in the world. He seems to feel like he’s odd, weird, an unfeeling “soulless creep” compared to all these normal people around him.
It just takes some persistent people, strangers, friends, and one unprofessional mental health professional for our mc to change his perspective and to realize his contented happiness. One of my favorite lines in the book is, “want what you have, never have what you want”. I believe that’s a lesson in contentment, a key to happiness.
This book was so worth the read. It grabbed me from the beginning and I didn’t want to put it down. Through this story I gathered that we are all a bit weird, we all struggle, and mental health is extremely important! And I know if I read it again I would learn even more about myself.
Thank you Daryl for sharing this part of your mind.
This is not a comedy, yet I laughed
This is not a tragedy, yet I cried
This is not a romance, yet I loved
This story is everything. It is real, it is raw, it is emotional and it is amazing.
Lovers Flood is a though provoking tale about a young man and his journey to find himself, in a world where he thinks he is not normal. It makes the reader stop and think as it highlights how the struggles we go through, stories we tell our children, even behaviours of our parents, can have a profound impact on us as we navigate life and shape the way we think about ourselves and the world.
It is always difficult to write a review for one of Daryl Banner’s books and tell you what I loved without providing spoilers, so I guess you will just have to read it for yourself.
I wanted to read it cover to cover in one sitting, but life/work got in the way, but every time I had to set it aside, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. I found myself wondering about the plight of this character when I was meant to be working. If I learnt nothing else about myself, I learnt not to start a full length Daryl Banner book mid-week if I cant drop everything and read it till the end.
I have read many of Daryl Banner’s books and this book is not a romantic comedy, lighthearted love story or dystopian world we have come to expect from Daryl. It is so much more, and it quickly became one of my favourites. This has just reinforced what an amazing wordsmith Daryl Banner is. I will happily read this again and recommend it highly.
Lover’s Flood isn’t your typical romance book. Daryl has write some very sensitive subject matters. If you need an escape from reality this book may not be for you but if you can handle dark moments then you may enjoy Lover’s Flood. This book with put you through all kinds of emotions, hold on tight.
Lover’s Flood is one beautiful and thought-provoking read. Daryl Banner has crafted a story that is one man’s journey through the angst-filled and awkward college years. No names are used in this book for the main characters and it honestly didn’t matter. Showing that the hero could be any young person, trying their hardest just to survive classes, annoying classmates, puzzling roommates and not to mention a less than stellar family life.
It’s a subtle rollercoaster kind of book where our hero’s life is never what it actually seems to be. Overly caught up in his own issues, not fully comprehending what is going on around him until he does. And then perhaps with any luck he’ll actually start living instead of existing. Trying his hardest to fight inner demons, past indiscretions, and one particular dream boy who threatens everything he may want or even need.
Lover’s Flood is very interesting in the use of therapy and anything psychology-related as being completely abhorrent to our hero. But it becomes more than clear that his own psyche can either be his downfall or his savior. Especially for a deep thinker like he is, it’s the realizations that he has to face that often surprise him but there is that continued hope that maybe they will lead him to a happier existence, despite any pain he might deny he feels.
Remembering my own early college days with the same sort of indecision and chance, I applaud the Author for using a bit of his own life to write a story that felt at times raw and exposed. Those days of discovery were not easy but this reading experience is like none I’ve ever had and I fell into an easy reading rhythm almost immediately feeling every emotion like they were my own. I will say that things do get rough many times throughout this book and it’s certainly not a light read. But it is all truly worth it in the end.
Extremely glad that Banner decided to revise an earlier work of his, I happily give this unique and sensitive read a solid 5 stars!
This is a different kind of story from Daryl Banner and I love it when authors “stretch” outside of their norm. I feel at a loss trying to write a review for a story that even now, is still churning in my mind; I loved moments, I hated moments, and some moments made me uncomfortable. There are so many twists that I am not sure what is real and what is imagined, are the events currently happening or are they flashbacks. This story is raw and gritty, touching on many taboo topics. It is a reminder to not judge people because the observer does not know the psyche or the demons we each possess. Life is a series of comedies and tragedies and our own lives shape what we feel and believe but underlying all of that, is hope. Hope for a better tomorrow, hope for the kind of love we dream of, a hope for life. Bravo!
