#1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward’s thrilling new novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, seductive cloth as her brother. Imprisoned for eons by their mother, the Scribe Virgin, she finally frees herself-only to face a devastating injury. Manuel Manello, M.D., is drafted by the Brotherhood to save her as only he … save her as only he can-but when the human surgeon and the vampire warrior meet, their two worlds collide in the face of their undeniable passion. With so much working against them, can love prove stronger than the birthright and the biology that separates them?

So much happens in these books it is like a few books in one. The story of Payne and Manny was much better than the than I expected it to be. He was brought in to operate on her after she broke her back and had to be brought to the Mansion from the Sanctuary.
They feel a connection right away, but she is struggling with being paralyzed since it is like being imprisoned in your body, when she is a warrior and needs to be active. Plus she is finally free of her mother and Sanctuary, yet stuck in a hospital bed. Prior to the surgery she made V promise to kill her if she ends up stuck that way. Jane knows there is no way Vishous can handle that.
As it is, Vishous is spiraling. He is crazy angry at the Scribe Virgin (his Mom) already for keeping the fact that she was his Mom from him and giving him to the Bloodletter for all those years growing up, but now finding out that she kept a twin sister from him puts him in a rage. He just wants pain and doesn’t know how to deal.
Bloodletters other son, Xcor and his group of Vampires, after ridding Europe of Lessers, have come across the Pond to destroy the King. They are setting up a meeting with the Glymera to try to win favor over the Brotherhood. They have also hit the streets slaughtering lessers. Xcor has been searching for Payne ever since she assassinated the Bloodletter to pay her back for killing his father in cold blood.
Quinn is still pining for Blaylock and Blay is still with Quinn’s cousin, but Loves Quinn. Quinn thinks it is wrong for some reason. Stupid, really, since it seems to be fine to have sex with Men or Women, just not be in a relationship with a man. Crazy. But poor Quinn is so messed up from the fact that his family didn’t love him because he was not perfect and had different colored eyes. I fear it will be a vey long road for him.
One of the very best series out there!! Highly recommend these well written stories and characters!! JR Ward’s is outstanding at building and blending this incredibly sexy, paranormal world!
Interesting story with Payne and her other half. Vishous and his mate are also included. There are points that your heart strings will be yanked on as the couples don’t seem to see eye to eye. The narrator did a great job!
I love a book with a strong female main character and Payne is that character in this book. Jane comes in a close second. The way these two women handle Vishous is high-five worthy. The reader learns more about Vishous and his tragic upbringing and there are reasons he’s rough and gruff. Seeing him loosen up a bit and finally face his past (Thank you, Butch!) made me admire his strength and perseverance.
Payne is a unique female in the vampire world. She is a fighter and I hope we get to see her Xhex in action together at some point. I was a bit worried about Payne in the beginning and the way she interacted with Dr. Manello. She fell for him hard and quick. Manny ends up being a straight up good guy with an interesting family heritage.
I’ve about had it with Quinn and his “pity me” story. I wish he would just man up and tell Blay how he feels.
The high point is Payne and Vishous’s past. Xcor has been looking for Payne for centuries and he gets a big surprise when he finally finds her. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him, though. He’s not Wrath’s biggest fan.
I love this series; they’re all good, but Payne’s and Manny’s story was one of my favorites.
Best paranormal series ever. I highly recommend it!
Can’t go wrong with any of the books in this series.
BDB. Always a favorite. 5
Payne suffered from a terrible injury while training with Wrath. The only person who can help her is Manny, Jane’s old boss. They are instantly attracted to each other even though they know nothing can come from it but fate has other plans for them.
Payne is a strong, capable, and sheltered female. Her mother has imprisoned her for years and she is finally free to do as she wishes. I liked her but didn’t connect with her as much as I have with previous ladies. I knew Manny was going to come back into play and I think pairing him with Payne is a good choice. I think they will be a good couple.
There is also a lot of focus on V and Jane’s relationship in this book. They are having marital issues and it takes some help from Butch to get them through it. This was one of the slower paced books of the series because of the issues with V and Jane and the pace of Payne and Manny’s relationship. I still enjoyed this book but it doesn’t have as much of an impact as others of the series.
This book also introduces the Band of Bastards, who I had completely forgotten about. I am interested in seeing how their storyline progresses and their interactions with the BDB. There is also some development with Quinn with his feelings towards Blay. I cannot wait to get to their book!
The Black Dagger Brotherhood series is one of my all time favorites. Great series.
Lover Unleashed was awesome! I loved all the characters and the way the world keeps building and building. I was excited while reading and can’t wait to see what happens next.
I adore this series and can’t rave enough about it!
This is first one was exposed to and it blew me away! So powerful and addictive that I had to find the rest and start from the beginning. I love Manny and Paine, they’re so Real. Passionate, Steamy and Funny. I would love to see more of them as a couple in the other books, with their humor and sassiness together. Anything J R Ward writes is pure gold and I can’t put it down!
Love, love, LOVE this book! Vishous has a twin sister and it’s Payne! She and Manny are perfectly paired!
Love the entire Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
Black dagger brotherhood series are seriously fun, sexy and easy to get lost in.
Loved the book
I know this book was Manny and Payne’s story, but V and Jane stole the story. And I LOVED it, V is one of my favorite characters so I can never get to much of him!
This was entertaining read, and a very slow burn romance.
The story of romance between doctor Manello and V’s sister looses importance when V and Jane start to have some problems.
On the other hand a new band of Vampires is introduced in this book.
My favorite BDB book. Manny x Payne are perfect. Butch is golden and is the MVP of the book. What he does for Vishous is beyond what is called for as a best friend. Those two break my heart. Stupid Jane. She doesn’t understand the warrior she hitched her cart to at all. Honestly the scenes between V and Jane are cringey at times. PDA was vomit worthy. Vishous in bed was hot like always. But like every scene with them it’s all V and Jane is just there bored.
