#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward’s Black Daggar Brotherhood series continues as the cold heart of a cunning predator is warmed against its will… Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous, son of the Bloodletter, possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father’s war camp, he was tormented and abused. As a member of the … abused. As a member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time—until a destiny he didn’t choose takes him into a future that cannot include her….

Finally, my favorite Black Dagger Brother -Vishous. I love his attitude, his keen intellect and the fact that he doesn’t suffer fools. Plus, he loves a smart woman and isn’t afraid that she might be smarter than him. As with the other books, this is a re-read so I skipped the flashbacks and stuck to the core romance which is still excellent. One of the things that I appreciate about the Warden’s worldbuilding is that the characters aren’t in static bubbles in the later books. I know some fans don’t like it, but when re-reading the books again, the threads between the characters makes it more epic.
I was waiting for Vishous to get over his crush on Butch and fall in love with someone and when he fell, he fell hard. But of course there had to be so many roadblocks. First he finally meets his mother who turns out to be the God they have all been praying to. Which opens a huge can of worms for V as to why she left him with his father for all those years to be tortured and humiliated, which basically made him the messed up Vampire he still is today.
Then to top it off, she expects him to become the Primale, which means he basically has to mate with 40 of the Chosen females that serve the Scribe Virgin in order to repopulate the ranks of the brotherhood. He agrees since it is his duty and since the Lessening Society has a never ending supply of humans to recruit from. However, he meets he meets his mate a few day later which complicates things.
The story of John Matthew is also furthered in this book as he Lash transitions before John and keeps threatening him. Also John, Quinn and Blaylock start hanging out at the bar, ZeroSum where Xhex watches out for John.
One thing I was waiting for in the last book was for Zsadist to have a sex talk with John. That happened in this book but I was a bit disappointed. Z told John that he read his file and knew what happened to him in the stairwell. He told John that he didn’t have to talk about it if he didn’t want to and that nobody else needed to know about it. That he would burn the file before he let anyone else see it. But I was a bit upset that he didn’t tell John that the same thing had happened to him when he was a blood slave. He talked to John later about being kidnapped and being a slave, but it is obvious from earlier books that John thinks no brother has ever been raped by men, especially Zsadist. He even thought that at one point.
Another storyline that was furthered was Phury’s. He is still pining for Bella, and that is getting sickening. He tried to break his celibacy with a hooker at ZeroSum in the bathroom to get over her, but has a new plan now. I hope for his sake it works out. He, and his hair, are apparently really hot. These books keep getting better and better so I can’t wait.
Where To Begin…
So I absolutely love this series. The settings, the characters and their flaws…I adore flawed characters. When they are written well, it’s such a treat to see their growth throughout a story. JR Ward is a phenomenal writer-her work is very unpredictable, her narration and dialogue is raw, edgy, and so often hilarious. Though she name drops like nobody’s business, I adore virtually all aspects of the way she puts together a story.
With all that, it pains me to say that Unbound was not my favorite of the series so far. I have been intrigued by Vishous’s storyline since his introduction and couldn’t wait to see how Ward would write this drama. To say there were a few mind-blowing moments, is an understatement. I enjoy reading stories that are outside of the box. Unbound was that and more, but I felt like Ward took it a bit too far with this one.
I can’t say more without giving it away, but I can say you will love these characters, hate some of their destinies, agonize over their choices, laugh over their outlooks and shake your head (either in awe or aggravation) when it’s all said and done. I think I may take a break following Phury’s book (though friends have told me to break BEFORE his story) I can’t help myself, I gotta know!
This one is on sale today (11.18.19) and definitely recommended.
Review:
Excellent!
We follow Vishous, who is, let’s face it, one mixed up puppy; his past has made him who he is, and that is one freaky vampire with a huge chip on his shoulder and a penchant for BDSM. But he’s likeable and even more so in this book. We learn a lot more about his past, about his individual vampire mojo skill-set, and about his lineage.
The love interest is a capable female doctor called Jane. She is tough as nails, holds her own with all the big boys in her profession and of course, the most important part, stands up to Vishous. There is something to be said for a strong female protagonist, and Jane makes a very fine one.
Together they are perfect, so that’s why I like the fact that JR Ward didn’t end this book on the usual high note, but mixed it up with an unconventional finish. Brilliant!
Too much of a good thing can just get you down.
Lover Unbound was great. Read it!
V will always be my favorite.
One of the very best series out there!! Highly recommend these well written stories and characters!! JR Ward’s is outstanding at building and blending this incredibly sexy, paranormal world!

Review I love this series and I was really looking forward to listening to this book. Vishous the son of the Bloodletter and the Scribe Virgin who gave him to his father when he was a baby. He was not only the victim of brutality, at the he inflicted it on others as well. His scars are physical, mental and emotional. I felt so bad for him. Vishous is also the carrier of a power that he considers to be a curse. One of his hands is deadly to anyone it touches. He must always keep it gloved and hidden. I was also happy that John made it through his transition but, I was sad that he is still suffering from a past attack. Dr. Jane Whitcomb is a gifted surgeon, and her life is her work. That changes drastically, however, on the night that Vishous is brought into her operating room with a mortal injury. Jane is able to save Vishous, but she has to enter his vampire world in order to do so. The minds of the other humans at the hospital can be erased, but Jane is too involved. I think that Jane is good for him she had a smart mouth and she accepted V and with her he is able to find love. Jane is willing to explore his need for physical pain that no one else has understood. But happiness is still out of his reach. Because of his ancestry, Vishous is expected to take on the role of the Primale of the Chosen. His job is to further the Brotherhood and the vampire species by procreating with the Chosen females. The only way he can escape this fate is if one of his brothers is willing to go in his place. And even if Vishous is able to avoid his duties as the Primale which Phury volunteers for to get away from Bella and I think to give his life some meaning which I will find out in the next book. I also liked that V finally told Butch how he felt and they way they did it was very heart felt. This book was not as good as the last one but I still gave it 5 star because I love this series and this book had me laughing and crying. I also like how Z is taking time with John and talking to him and that he gave him Darius’s book. I can’t wait to listen to Phury and the rest of the rap music listening brothers.
If you like action, suspenseful, and steamy reading this is the book for you.
I love this series
Well, damn. I have a new favorite book in the series and a new favorite female character!

Love the Black Dagger Brotherhood Vicious this is his story His time to find Love. A great read as are all thBDB books.
I love this author, she is GREAT!
*4 Stars*
I enjoyed this one, but I was hoping for more form V’s book, to be honest. I love V, and especially his friendship with Butch. He’s quite an interesting character, and there were definitely lots of things in this one that I wasn’t expecting to learn, which threw me completely off guard.
I was also interested in following John’s journey and am curious to see how that keeps playing out in the following books. I like how we get bits and pieces of the other characters, as well as the main ones in each book.
Lots of unexpected twists in this one, and I look forward to continuing the series.
It’s hot And original. A new take on vampires. Great series. Read them all at least three times.
In the fifth Black Dagger Brotherhood book, Jane Whitcomb lives a solitary life as a head surgeon. Her only real friend is her boss, Manny. When a gunshot victim arrives at the hospital, she saves his life and learns right away he’s not exactly human.
Vishous is different from most vampires. He sees visions of the future and can kill with his glowing left hand, but his vision-seeing days are on the fritz. After he winds up in a human hospital, he has a vision of him and his surgeon being together. When his boys come to break him free, he demands Doc Jane come along for the ride.
I definitely liked Vishous. His past is horrible and heartbreaking, but I don’t think it’s as bad as Zsadist’s. Everything is a power-exchange with him. He doesn’t really love or care about anyone, at least until he met his best pal, Butch. V and Jane relate on so many levels. She helps him heal. For her, he wants to be a better, kinder man, but he still craves darkness and pain.
Jane is a strong, independent woman with her own depressing, neglectful childhood. I liked her, but she rambled a lot. For example, it took several pages to describe her sister’s funeral because she couldn’t stay on topic.
Butch is really the only person who understands V, other than Jane, and their bromance is one of the best parts about the series. V cares so much about Butch that he’s partly in love with him, but he loves Jane in full. I wish their sexual tension would’ve been further explored, but I would’ve been infuriated if either man had cheated on their women.
I really enjoyed the subplot with the Scribe Virgin, the Brotherhood’s deity. She demands V become a Primale—a selected member of the Brotherhood who must impregnate the members of the Chosen, the Scribe Virgin’s sacred followers. He’s angry but resigned to his fate until he falls for Jane.
Other than the main story line, the book focuses heavily on John. I absolutely adore him. He’s finally gone through his transition and has learned, yet again, life isn’t always fair.
Phury also played a big role. He’s still as lost as ever, but his act of kindness in regards to V will lead the way to his own story.
There are few inconsistencies/typos with the prior books, but they’re minor. For example: Wrath’s Louis XIV desk is now XVI, and John was supposed to be held up at knifepoint, but now it’s gunpoint.
There are lots of pop culture references in the series, which I’m often confused by. Why are there so many acronyms? I couldn’t decipher what SOP, AMA, BPOL, PFD, DSM-IV, plus more, even meant.
Anyway, it’s a good book with great characters. One of the best in the series.
5 Stars
Dark and steamy and fun to read. This series gets a bit heavy at times with the war to save vampire-kind but it’s new and different and sexy as hell. Great getaway read
