A warrior with inner demons falls for a woman who could save his soul in this seductive novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.Within the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Rhage is the warrior vampire with the strongest appetites. He’s the deadliest fighter, the most voracious lover, the quickest to act on his impulses. He’s also been cursed with two hundred years of … with two hundred years of hell. Possessed by a beast, he lives in fear of the times when his inner dragon comes out and he’s a danger to everyone around him.
Mary Luce has unwittingly found herself in the vampire world, and under Rhage’s protection. With her own life-threatening curse to bear, she’s not looking for love. Besides, she’s stopped believing in saving grace and miracles long ago. But when Rhage’s intense sexual attraction turns into emotional bonding, he knows he must have her for his mate. As their enemies close in, Mary finds herself praying for something she fears she’ll never have: life eternal with the one she loves.

Rhage is a vampire with strong appetites who is cursed with a beast. Mary Luce is a survivor. She is unwillingly thrown into the vampire world when she comes across a mute boy, John Mathew. While she isn’t looking for love, there is something about the vampire Rhage that she can’t stop thinking about. She wants to be with him, even if she doesn’t have a lot of time left.
Rhage and Mary’s story is very different from Wrath and Bellas. Both of them have their own curses that get in the way of their life. Rhage with his ability to shift into a dragon (which I hate how long he keeps Mary in the dark about). Mary is a survivor of cancer but it’s back again and more aggressive. This isn’t a happy book really. Yes it’s got romance, but most of it is pretty depressing because Mary is slowly dying from Leukemia. So expect a tense and emotional book from this one. This definitely isn’t one of my favorites of this series. I love this couple in later books, but the heaviness of the situation in this book makes me not love it.
What I did love about this book was Zhadist and Bella. Those two are probably my favorite couple from the series. I also really like John Mathew. I know his story is going to be very emotional when we do get to it and I can’t wait.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I look forward to seeing more of Rhage and Mary (and the Beast) in the future books.
“Lover Eternal” was completely wonderful!! I loved it. We still have pov switchs but it’s mostly the main characters pov in this one. Oh my gosh I am so in love with Rhage and Mary. God Rhage completely stole my heart. I love him with everything in me. He is so perfect. The way he loves Mary is so pure. I loved getting to know more about the beast and see Rhage react to it concerning Mary. Mary is tough and guarded and so incredibly strong. She is human and they way she handles everything is incredible. I do admit that she was very indecisive and tries to push Rhage away and it was kind of annoying but they are just so perfect that I got past it in not time. The love that both of them share is powerful. This entire book is amazing. It so full of love and heartbreak. It’s got insane action and I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. I enjoyed all the side character and the new characters J.R. Ward brought in. I loved this book and I can not stop smiling. The ending was so good. I am stuck between re-reading this and starting “Lover Awaken”. I’m so excited to continue on with this series. This book is everything. I am so in Love. I want you all to read this book!!!
This book ROCKS. I believe that this is the book of the series. If it is not, I apologize to J. R. Ward. Both “Dark Lover” and “Lover Eternal” lead deeper into their world. Even messed up (people?) You start to feel in your heart. Looks like I have a new author and a series to get my teeth into. I really suggest you read these as well. LOVE IT, LOVE IT LOVE IT!
HOLY SMOKES
This book… This series…
Please bare with me as I really want to rant and rave about this series. It makes me giddy. It makes me happy. It makes me excited.
Let’s start with talking about the series as a whole, shall we? But Whitney, you have only read the first two books. How can you possibly know that you love this series? I’m glad you asked. How many paranormal romance series do you know of that each book in the series can’t be read as a stand-alone? Exactly. I have gave up quite some time ago on finding a series like this that isn’t YA. This series is different.
But Whitney, vampires are not different. They are overused and abused. True, they are. However, that is the beauty about a paranormal FICTION novel; they can be altered and reborn. Ward’s vampires are different. They have their own society, beliefs, and enemies.
But Whitney – Let me stop you right there. What novel have you read that lately that is narrated by multiple characters? Even more shocking, the characters are so fully-developed that your mind will ebb and flow gracefully with the change. Their “interruptions” were welcomed and drew me deeper into the story. I loved it.
Alright, you got me there. What about their names? They are terrible. Wrath, Rhage, Zsadist, Vishous, Phury, Tohrment. Yeah, they are unique. Let me tell you a secret, though. They are supposed to be different. It is to help the reader separate them from the norm. And if you really think about it, how bad-ass is it that Ward took some awesome words, changed their spelling, and left us with different, meaningful names that we can pronounce. Thank you!
Okay, but isn’t their behavior odd? It is just plain weird. Like I’ve mentioned, they aren’t normal. They are ancient vampire warriors trying to protect their dwindling species. Not only are they centuries old, they are very animalistic. They aren’t human. They listen rap music… Seriously? THEY MAY BE OLD BUT THEY ARE LIVING IN MODERN TIMES. You can’t tell me that you don’t like multiple genres of music. And going back to the weird names, how come no one ever talks about how weird it is that the lessors refer to each other by Mr. first-letter-of-last-name. Mr. X, Mr. O, Mr. E…. Nope, all you all want to do is rip apart the heros. Let me fill you in – just in case you are curious. I believe they go by that because it is a metaphor for the person they used to be. Bravo, Ms. Ward
The insta-love is annoying, isn’t it? Love doesn’t work like that. Well, it is a good thing that this is a work of fiction, huh? This series isn’t even trying to be realistic at all. The heros treat their heroine so – Let me guess? different Once again, they are different. They are vampires. They are animalistic. When they find their mate, they protect her – cherish her. Until then, they give in to their animalistic urges. That’s how they survive.
(I had to get that out of my system. I have seen so many reviews with the above complaints. It annoys me. If you can’t be open-minded, you don’t need to be reading a fiction novel.)
Now, let’s jump into the book. This will have spoilers – obviously. So, do not read below this unless you want to be spoiled. (And you don’t, just read it. Come back, and then we will chat!)
Butch. Oh, how I love me some Butch. I must say I never knew that I would grow to love this character. I didn’t really care much for him until the end of the first book. Now, however, if something were to happen to him, I would be so upset. Butch is having a hard time figuring out where he belongs. He feels right at home living with the BDB, but he is human. So he doesn’t actually belong. He feels like their pet. But he doesn’t feel like he belongs with his people either. He has no job and no family. Not even a girlfriend.
Marissa. I don’t know what her problem is, but she best be getting over it quickly. Okay, so maybe I know what her problem is… Butch is human. She’s had a terrible nonexistent love life, and now she is in love with a forbidden human.
JM John Matthew. I adore him already. When he first showed up at Mary’s doorstep, I wanted to adopt him. Then I found out that he is only a few years younger than me and that would be quite awkward. LOL I think it is safe to say that he is D reincarnated. Torh and Wellsie taking him in was the sweetest thing. I hate to admit it, but I even broke down with JM at that table with Wellsie. That moment was just wonderful. I can’t wait to see them as a family and the rest of JM’s story.
Bella Oh, Bella. I don’t really know what to think of her just yet. I already know that she is going to be Z’s mate. (Book 3 is locked and loaded on my kindle.) I want to like her because I have been fascinated by Z since I found out he was a blood slave. They have some major chemistry that I am more than ready to explore, but then there’s Phury. Z and Phury’s story is already complicated and I don’t want them to be driven apart by a woman. I really hope I won’t have any hard feelings towards them when I finish book 3. Anyway, Bella was kidnapped by Mr. O when he went to find Mary. Z is frantic and he is determined to find her.
Mr. O As much as I hate to say it, I really enjoyed his character. Yes, I hate him – and all the other lessors. However, he was just so interesting to read about. He obviously has issues about being a lessor; it is stealing his identity. Getting to see him dye his hair while chanting in the mirror was brilliant. He definitely has issues with not being able to have sex since he is so caught up in his ex Jennifer. They had a very abusive relationship. He took Bella to fill that void for him.
Rhage Hollywood. Hal E. Wood. LOL I wasn’t sure I was going to love his love story, and honestly, I didn’t. (It didn’t take away from the series/book at all, obvi.) I think the beast picked Mary for Rhage. He was drawn in by the sound of her voice because the beast liked it. Although, he knew she was sick, he couldn’t stay away. I like that he had no idea how to date. The scene where he calls Bella, threatens her to set him up with Mary, and then asks where to take her on a date, was hilarious. He did compliment Mary’s character, though. He was patient and kind, but firm. He had to be since Mary fought their relationship constantly.
Mary Mary Luce. Virgin. I have seen that a lot of people didn’t care for Mary’s character. I did; I can appreciate that she was real. She’s sick. She’s dying. She has her own curse. She was prepared to die alone, when all of a sudden, Rhage marched in. After that, she didn’t want to die anymore. Because of him. Once she came to terms with that, she didn’t want him to watch her suffer – helplessly. Yes, it was frustrating that she fought him every chance she had. But she thought she was doing the right thing.
Beast Rhage’s alter-form. This whole relationship between Mary, Rhage, and the beast just didn’t do it for me. I did not like the beast, and I’m sure that Rhage influenced my opinion of it. He hated it. It made him do things he wasn’t proud of and put him through hell. The scene where he leaves Mary to go screw another woman infuriated me. I understand now that Ward had Mary to tame the beast so that it can stick around. I mean, it is bad-ass and it will come in handy during a lessor war. However, why did she have to be sexual? When V and Butch had to chain Rhage to the bed, I lost it. Really? Was that necessary? Yeah, yeah – it was to prove it wouldn’t hurt Mary. I don’t know. It just didn’t do anything for me. I feel like that could have been omitted and Mary could just have been enough to keep it at bay. I understand that it likes her, but… I just can’t get over that part. Ugh. The scene where Mary finally gets to see the beast was awesome. I do like the fact that she is the only person that can be around it. I guess there is pros and cons to the beast existence.
Overall, and I’m sure you can tell, I love this series. I loved this book. BRING ON THE NEXT ONE!

Love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Read it over and over and will read it again.
Continues the story of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
OMG! Such an emotionally charged and beautiful read! Rhage and Mary’s story has all the feels!
I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It’ was the waiting for the next book that propelled me to write my PNR series for The Night Warriors. Ward knows how to hook you with super sexy Alpha males that you wanna know more about. It was hard to choose one of the books because they are all awesome. Lover Mine is the first book in this series and it’s good to read in order. So more than recommending the book I’m recommending the whole series.
I love the Brothers . Rhage & Mary’s story is really good. Strong characters & a great story.
This series is gripping and a great read.
Handsome Rhage falls madly for a human. Will they work out when especially she’s human fragile? Lots of action and romance with dash of intrigue.
I love this whole series! The only one I couldn’t get into was the one about Butch; I wanted to read about hot, sexy vampire men, not a human, so he didn’t do it for me, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good book. Ms. Ward never disappoints.
What a Book. Thrilling, hot, exciting.
Love it!!
