Abigail McKinnie refuses to allow her sisters to be dispersed across the nation as mail-order brides. Even though the Union soldiers took everything from them during their march through Atlanta-their lands scorched, house burned, food stolen-she won’t give up. With a plan in place, she sets out for Kansas to her second cousin under the guise of marriage. But instead, she plans to convince him … that the seven of them can help run the homestead for him. Her plan is foolproof until she makes the arduous journey to discover he’s dead.
Owen Baker vows to never have a woman in his life again after the death of so many loved ones, but when Abigail McKinnie struts onto his land claiming ownership on behalf of her dead cousin, he’s dumbfounded by her drive and beauty. Despite her abilities and their attraction, he vows to throw her over his horse to deliver her to the first train home the minute she recuperates from her trip.

A very interesting, romantic read. I enjoy reading about settling the west. I had no idea that mail order brides played such a big role.
I really enjoyed this book and particularly liked the courageous older sister who was willing to risk and endure so much to help build a new life for her war ravaged siblings.
Easy reading romance…Happily ever after story.
This book is a fun quick read with a little bit of suspense as to the ending. The characters are people who could be alive today with the same issues.
I always enjoy these type books!! My favorites!!!
I enjoy reading books that end logically and happily!
I liked this book so much That I bought the series!
Times were hard; real hard. Often only the determined, strong survived. This is a story of what you often had to face and endear in the mid 1800s as you traveled westward to make a life and sometimes a new life for yourself.
Fun read
Very good
Romantic but highlights the spoils of war and the after affects. Moving
An easy, enjoyable read.
No steamy sex scenes – Yea!!!
Realistic picture of life in that time period. Sweet and unexpected coming to love each other and enjoy the goodness of friendship, nature, community. A story of finding strength and purpose through embracing all of one’s life.
I enjoyed this book. It could have been longer, but they want you to buy the next book in the series. I was entertained and will consider purchasing the next book.
I liked the twists and turns in the plot
This was a very Interesting book with a twist on the traditional story. I was excited and impressed until a bit over 2/3’s of the way through the book where it was really getting interesting, the author seemed to rush through the ending without fully developing the wonderful story she had built bringing the climax of the story too quickly, and rushing through the ending. Still a good story, but could have been so much better
The book was good for light reading, there was information about the past of the sisters, but you never knew who they were.
I love a good story line with a strong female character who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and do what she has to. That describes Abigail McKinnie completely. Life has thrown her a lot of devastation but she continues to hold strong and due what she has to for her sisters. She travels a long distance to marry a man only to learn that he’s already passed away. She quickly stakes her claim to the land and finds Owen Baker there. This book is full of historical moments about Native American attacks, war devastation, loss and of course love.
Not too racey but touching.
