Love in the Afternoon continues the Hathaways series by Victorian romance author Lisa Kleypas. As a lover of animals and nature, Beatrix Hathaway has always been more comfortable outdoors than in the ballroom. Even though she participated in the London season in the past, the classic beauty and free-spirited Beatrix has never been swept away or seriously courted…and she has resigned herself to … has resigned herself to the fate of never finding love. Has the time come for the most unconventional of the Hathaway sisters to settle for an ordinary man—just to avoid spinsterhood?
Captain Christopher Phelan is a handsome, daring soldier who plans to marry Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious flirt Prudence Mercer, when he returns from fighting abroad. But, as he explains in his letters to Pru, life on the battlefield has darkened his soul—and it’s becoming clear that Christopher won’t come back as the same man. When Beatrix learns of Pru’s disappointment, she decides to help by concocting Pru’s letters to Christopher for her. Soon the correspondence between Beatrix and Christopher develops into something fulfilling and deep…and when Christopher comes home, he’s determined to claim the woman he loves. What began as Beatrix’s innocent deception has resulted in the agony of unfulfilled love—and a passion that can’t be denied…

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This series can’t be over – it just can’t be!!! I loved it so much! The description of this book didn’t sound that great to me – yep, this story has been done before – but it was simply marvelous. Beatrix has been so entertaining in all the previous books. Her love of animals was so endearing, especially her hedgehog. …
As many of you know, Lisa Kleypas is one of my favorite authors. She writes such beautiful and flawed characters, and such sensual, poignant love scenes. Love in the Afternoon is probably my second favorite book of hers (Devil in Winter will always be my favorite because Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent…*swoon*…), but I digress…
My favorite …
I must admit that I delayed reading this book since I didn’t much care about Beatrix and worried that I would not like her happy ever after. I am glad to say that it was very enjoyable journey. I got to know Beatrix and found her vivacious, witty, funny and very intuitive. The way she regarded the world and people around her was very refreshing. …
This is the end of my Hathaways journey, and I don’t want to leave their universe . Beatrix’s story is the PERFECT conclusion for this wonderful ride. I’ve been waiting for her story over the course of the series, because she’s the one person in the family that I would LOVE to be friends with. She’s the most eccentric sibling in the eccentric …
This book was better than I expected! I enjoy letter-writing novels because it really lets you get inside the head of characters, and this was no different. Christopher and Bea were so sweet, and Bea really grew on me when originally I wasn’t looking forward to her story.
I really enjoy this author, and this is one of my very favorite of her books. I’ve read it at least 5 or 6 times. Beatrix (the heroine) has grown from a young girl into a special, unique woman. The “Cyrano in reverse” trope is great – we get to see how she and her hero (Christopher) open up to each other, and end up falling in love. Her love, …
I enjoyed this book and the story it told.
Christopher was in the service, fighting in the Crimean war He wrote to his girlfriend and wanted her to write back. She didn’t want to return his correspondence, so her friend wanted to respond to him, realizing how lonely he was. He falls in love with her. He returns from the war and realized she isn’t the same girl as the one who wrote to him. …
Great wrap up of the Hathaways and related characters. Always enjoy Lisa Kleypas novels. I don’t know why it took me 10 years to find it, but so glad I did. Wounded warriors – physically and psychically – is always challenging, and handled very well, identifying some of the characteristics and methods needed to assist with transition to ‘normal’.
Doesn’t disappoint8
Very well written & edited. A lovely, heart-warming story. I love that the MCs acknowledged & declared their feelings for each other near the halfway point in the story rather than suffering in long drawn out, angst ridden uncertainty typical of so many HRs I seem to find.
I had read this book in paperback back in 2010 when it was initially released and enjoyed it. When it was available on sale in kindle version, I snapped it up and fell in love with Beatrix Hathaway. This is book 5 of the Hathaway series, honestly Bea’s story was not as memorable as Amelia’s story in Mine Till Midnight or Win’s story in Seduce Me …
This is a keeper! Loved these characters!
I love this author and this is one of her best books!
I love love this author and have read all of her books. This book is part of a series that I read years ago these are books I’ll always come back too
Loved it.
Heartwarming and sweet, this story touched my heart as Beatrix and Christopher came together and fell in love. There were so many ups and downs, love, and emotion, and wonderful scenes with these fantastic characters, I adored it all. An exceptional conclusion to the series!
Who wouldn’t love Beatrice? She’s a peach!
There is so much to love about the Hathaway series. The characters are thoughtful and lovable. There’s wit and charm and amazing steamy scenes. Each Hathaway is unique and you can see them develop throughout the series. I recommend this series every chance I get.
Beatrice and Christopher are my absolute favorite Kleypas couple. They are both …
Love Lisa’s books.
