Love in Lead (Seven Brides of South Dakota #3) was a good read by Kari Trumbo. Eva Arnsby feels the need to draw the woodland creatures around her home, and it gets her in trouble. Especially with the stranger who steals not only her notebook but also so much more. Captain George Roth is a Ranger who is suspicious of the woman he finds sneaking around in the woods. He wants to find out her secrets and goes on an assignment to investigate. Eva is reluctant to work with him as he’s asking too many questions. I enjoyed reading this story and can’t wait to read more by the author.
Lead is a town near to where the family have settled and this is where Eva (the other twin sister) and a ranger by the name of George Roth slowly fall in love.
Theirs is a very strained love story with George believing that Eva is being treasonous and betraying her country.
The story itself is well written and kept me listening long past my bedtime. I just love it when that happens!
The main characters are quite believable and very endearing even though the both have faults, but these are forgivable as the story progresses.
The narration is what I have come to expect of Meghan Kelly. She is really a pleasure to listen to with her very good and recognizable voices (even the male ones), clear diction and emotions that come through in her speech.
I am very happy to recommend this third book/audiobook in the series and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
I requested and listened to an audiobook and my voluntary review above is unbiased.
Brain and Brawn
Funny how the stereotype persists of the working man being undereducated and the intellectual having a weak physique. My own life contains a contractor with a Masters from a prestigious university and we won’t even get into the variety of disparate activities and pursuits I’ve enjoyed. So I treasure the premise of this novel set in a mining town in South Dakota in the 19th century. This is the third of (at least?) seven stories and vague reference is made to the activities of the prior tales. Since some of the motivations in this one are predicated on prior actions, I found myself longing for a paragraph or two of summary to bring me up to date and had to roughly piece together some of the background. Nonetheless the instant plot is thoroughly standalone within itself and an interesting composite of ideas and characters. Indians, miners, rangers, the army, philanthropists, farmers and ranchers all co-exist within the “pages.” Meghan Kelly, a popular narrator, does her usual excellent job voicing characters from upperclass female to rough-hewn rancher, adding an additional layer of enjoyment to this saga.
Love in Lead is a charming romance in the Seven Brides of South Dakota series by Kari Trumbo. Although third in the series, it is easily a stand-alone story. I have enjoyed several other books by this author and was looking forward to reading this book and was not disappointed. The story moves quickly with a few twists and turns to the plot that helped to keep my interest. Eva is a naive young woman who loves to draw and often goes off into the woods to draw, not realizing the danger she puts herself in. Captain Roth comes upon someone he thinks is a man and is suspicious of the person being involved with the Indians in the area. What a surprise when he realizes the man is really Eva in men’s trousers. He is assigned to discover if she is a traitor and the adventures begin. The author has captured well the era of the setting and the emotions and actions of her characters. They are realistic and relatable and I was drawn quickly into their story and enjoyed watching the romance develop between George and Eva. Readers of historical romance books will not want to miss this one. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audio version of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own. Meghan Kelly does a great job narrating George and Eva’s story, which made the listening experience enjoyable.
I loved that Eva enjoyed nature and reading. I do too. I wish I was artistic like her and able to draw details so well. But knowing how detailed she is I was surprised that she thought Mr. George Roth and Captain Roth weren’t the same man just because they dressed and acted differently. George wasn’t happy being a professional like his parents wanted, but he wasn’t completely happy working as a ranger either especially after he was forced to go undercover to investigate Eva and falls for her. He had to overcome breaking her trust and she had to decide whether or not to forgive him.
He is certain she did it. She knows she didn’t…
I’ve been quite curious about Love In Lead since reading the back cover copy and wondering how in the world the hero would turn out to be ‘a chameleon in a suit’. Boy, boy did I find out in the third book in Kari Trumbo’s historical romance Seven Brides Of South Dakota series!
Captain George Roth is definitely a man wearing too many masks and there were times I positively disliked him, though, he had a habit of turning right around and disarming me with his kindness just as he does to Eva. I genuinely liked Eva, though she can be a bit stubbornly naive at times.
Love In Lead is a nice addition to Kari Trumbo’s historical-romance-with-a-little-western Seven Brides Of South Dakota series and I enjoyed the story. I can’t wait to find out what’s in store for the Arnsby sisters in the next books.
As with the previous books I listened to Love In Lead in audiobook format. And, like the others I found the sound quality and the production in general to be excellent. The narrator is very good, though she has a persistent habit of mispronouncing a very few words such as ‘hearth’. At any rate, Kari Trumbo’s novel was in good hands with this production and it was an enjoyable listen.
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
What a wonderful story and narration! Kari Trumbo creates magic with her words and descriptions to the point I can almost see the story unfold. Eva has been lonely ever since an incident her and her twin being separated and now she was married. Going outside and a little bit away from her home, she sketches nature and even an indian brave that came upon her one day.
Through a series of events she comes under suspicion of aiding the Indians by a Ranger, Capt George, who has been keeping an eye on the Indians and their movements
This is a story of building trust, finding the truth and the building of a love that will endure by two people who never expected it.
Simply beautiful and with the narration of Meghan Kelly, it was Perfect!
Beautiful!
What do you have to look forward to when all hope is lost? Find out in this tale full of twists, Indians, love, forgiveness, deceit and books! I love all the unexpected in this sweet book!! I hope you will too!
What a beautiful, exciting story. MS Trumbo has once again written a meaningful classy love story that transports the reader to the outskirts of a town called Lead. A beautiful young woman who chafes against the traditions of her day to pursue her hearts desires. We also meet a young man who becomes torn between duty and honor. As the story unfolds, both will be tested in ways they never imagined. I loved the way Ms Trumbo carries the reader on their journey, the highs and lows, the dangers each must face and the role faith plays as the hero, heroine and reader must answer their own response to the questions they encounter along the way. A beautiful faith based read that transported me in time I was sorry to see end. I cannot wait to read the next story Ms Trumbo writes as I know it will be just as exciting. A happy ever after ending for the characters and the reader.
