Twenty-seven-year-old Rachel Stern is in a rut. Despite her mother’s best efforts, she is still single. At two-hundred and forty-two pounds, she still lives at home, the victim of a constantly-cooking Jewish mother whose force-feeding techniques have become legendary.
As if that isn’t bad enough, Rachel’s Friday and Saturday evenings are spent with her parents and her Saturday mornings consist … mornings consist of wedding gown shopping with her also single best friend. She is clearly going nowhere. But at least she’s not alone. Until her best friend snags a boyfriend.
Finally, unable to stand herself and her weight problem anymore, Rachel signs up for Weight Watchers.
Finnegan Schwartz, a young man who has already been successful at the Weight Watchers program, having lost a hundred pounds, champions Rachel and becomes her impromptu weight loss coach and newest friend. Rachel soon learns there’s so much more to this funny and shy guy who she’d overlooked before.
Amid her mother’s overzealous attempts to fix her up, bizarre family dinners and crises that threaten to unravel the entire Stern family, will Rachel be able to find something she’s never thought was hers for the taking: self-acceptance?

My first read by M. Greene and I would have given it a 4 star but for the ending… I thought it was well written and enjoyed the relatable characters…but…all the crying and the abrupt end!! I ask… did she lose the weight, get married, kids, dog, etc?!?!
Loved it
Good book. The weight issue and mother’s constant pushing Rachel out of her comfort zone seemed realistic, as did Rachel’s growing relationship with Finn. There were other parts of the story line that didn’t seem realistic and were a bit maddening, like the family’s acceptance of the Uncle’s awful behavior. Would be interested in the rest of the story, so if there is a sequel in the works… :0)
Made me want to lose some weight.
This one was sweet.
This book should have been offered as an endorsement of Weight Watcher’s. It had almost no story line, except that joining Weight Watcher’s fixes everything wrong in your life. I do not recommend.
Sweet romance; very innocent if you are looking for a love story without graphic love scenes. I’d feel comfortable letting a teen read this. Characters were somewhat stereotypical (setting is a Jewish family) but still lovable and ultimately you were rooting for the protagonist to find love.
Best story I’ve read in a long time!
3.5‘S. I want Harry to be my dad. It was a good quick read. Some parts went on a bit too long and didn’t really add to the story. It was easy to skip Past those parts.
Ended too soon, I wanted there to be more!
I tried hard to like this, but the characters were one-dimentional and the writing was mediocre.
Just really enjoyed this book!
Could not even finish it, horribly written.
How would you like to find out your parents have signed you up for speed dating?
A funny but very real novel about a single overweight librarian living with her parents, trying to lose weight, and finding love.
Hilarious situations but so honest…who can’t relate to the horror of trying on a bathing suit or dealing with the relatives that just say what they think.
Rachel is looking for a good looking man and rejects Finn, a nice chubby man even though she needs to lose a one hundred pounds. Rachel then realizes her mistake as one man sneaks off on a date and leaves her with the bill. The agony of trying to eat right while craving ice cream is so right on. The humor is sweet and the relationship between the characters is great ……you root for this couple, you applaud Rachel as she loses weight but grows stronger as a person and you finish this book with a smile!!
This book did everything right. Great characters that you wanted to know and wanred to root for. Rachel is a girl who takes a step in bettering her life by joining weight watchers. With an overbearing Jewish mother who lives to cook and self control that could use some discipline she’s in her way. Through the book we see Rachel deal with being the best friend whose always a bridesmaid, the dutiful daughter whose always there to help her parents, and through will and discipline and a new friend someone who finally sees herself as someone worth loving. So through all that why 3 stars? To put it bluntly…the ending. Talk about a let down. I’m left with so many questions and seeing as this doesn’t seem to be part 1 of a series I guess I’ll never get them answered.
