(Better Date than Never series, Book #1)
Ellen may not believe in storybook love, but it’s about to rewrite her life . . .
Ellen’s figured out that finding the right guy is all about compatibility. That’s why she signs up for Detailed Dating—the local online dating scene in Sacramento. They ask men the hard questions, compare their answers with hers, then she filters through the profiles of … the profiles of each provided “match.” After numerous email exchanges, she narrows it down to two promising candidates she’s excited to meet in person.
When Ellen’s best friend asks her for a favor, dog-sitting leads to disaster and Ellen ends up at the local vet where she meets a man she can’t get out of her mind. Henry isn’t a logical choice, but she finds herself paying for dog obedience class to spend more time with him.
Ellen knows that in order to have a lasting relationship, she should take the safe route and go for one of the pre-screened guys. But, how can she think with her head when her heart keeps begging her to give Henry a chance?

Ellen is trying online dating so she has better luck than her mother, who married twice and had more boyfriends including her father. As she gets down to two choices, she has a surprise feeling when she meets someone at the vet where she took a friends dog as it was choking. As the two dates backfire, she keeps thinking about Henry.
The storyline is fun and heartwarming. The characters are well detailed, with great backstories, banter and sass. Loved the best friend who was so supportive. The Best Auntie In The World item was a great bit. The ending brought more tears to my eyes as the whole story was emotional and had great surprises, especially at the end. Well done.

This is book one of the Better Date Than Never series and tells the story of Ellen, who signs up for Detailed Dating of Sacramento, which asks a lot more questions about each person on the site and promises to compare prospective couples by their individual answers about themselves and what they are looking for in a match. Instead of the horrors of other dating sites, this allows her to whittle down those she is matched to, from both their answers, and then get to chat online before choosing a final two that she would like to meet up with in person. While she is preparing to arrange a first date with her two candidates, her best friend Rachel asks her a favour. She has a sudden blind date and needs someone to dog sit her little beagle, who she has only had for a short while, and totally pampers. Ellen isn’t too keen as Chester likes to chew on everything and anything, including her brand new boots! The night of dog sitting ends in a near disaster when Chester decides to chew on the contents of her purse and ends up choking on her. She rushes a couple of blocks to the nearest vets and a young man helps her stop Chester from choking on a hairball! He doesn’t look quite like a vet and is actually there with his dog Kenzie, who he rescued off the side of the road. Henry doesn’t reveal what he does for a living, being quite good at avoiding the question.
She can’t get him out of her mind when she gets home, even though she believes absolutely in her dating app to find her the man she is best suited to. Her own mother had a bad dating history, divorcing two men and not even marrying her father, noting him as not important, which hurts a lot! Her mother asks her to attend a new art gallery show, that she is going to with her current beau, so she agrees to go with Rachel, as payback for her favour. One of her first face to face date is a bit extreme and blunt, with a man who seems to be marking off points on a notepad, to see if she matches what was on her application. The other may also be exactly what she wants on paper, but why then, is she still thinking of the man she met at the vets and borrowing Chester, to keep seeing him at an obedience class? A case of going with a person who is your ideal match on paper and in person, but with no spark, or going with the one you can’t get out of your mind, even though you really know nothing about them and whether they should be an ideal match to you. A nice read, with a HEA ending and two main characters that are well suited to each other in the end. Dating isn’t something that you can programme or find on demand. Love will find you when you least expect.
Susan Hatler knows how to write a book that pulls the reader in. Ellen thought she would not get hurt if she was logical about her future husband. She met Henry when she took her friends dog to the vet. The sparks flew but he was not part of her plan. He was interested but did not think she would want him because of his career. She realized after talking to one of her dates and a customer that love is not about compatibility but about feelings. I love how Susan Hatler shows that our childhood has an effect on how we see things as adults.

I love stories where you can breeze through them because they are so fun, so well-written, and just plain easy to read. Love at First Date is exactly that. I loved going on Ellen’s journey to find love. Henry was a sweet guy, and while I wish we’d gotten into his head a little more, then ending was perfect. 🙂

I loved Ellen and Henry’s story, Susan Hatlers stories are very romantic, funny and sweet with underlined heat between the characters without going all out on sex scenes. This is a very good short story.

The Heart Wants What The Heart Wants
This is a very cute, novella length, romantic comedy. Our heroine has decided to chose a life-mate by compatibility. She wants to avoid bad relationships and only date someone she is totally compatible with. Just read this story and see how that works out for her. This is a very cute story with some cute dogs and some very cool characters. As with all of this author’s work, this story is sweet and clean, of high quality, and leaves you wanting more. I received this ARC book for free from Booksprout and this is my honest review.
I throughly enjoyed each page of this well written storyline. The characters are engaging and well developed and kept me entertained.
I loved this story. It is the kind that you can identify with the characters and immerse yourself in the story. Very well written and characters to win the heart make this book a must read.
Really enjoyed this laugh out loud, sexy, fun and action packed adventure filled with engaging and exciting charters, witty dialog, heart racing twists and emotionally thrilling passion. Great reading from beginning to end and so hard to put down.
Ellen is so sweet and so eager to find the right guy that she is going with statistics not passion for when she meets someone well that is until she meets the mysterious Henry after a scary yet hilarious dog issue! There are many laughs to be had while reading this and it doesn’t hurt there are some cute dogs, awkward dinner dates and conclusion jumping along the way as Ellen tries to find her perfect guy!

This was a surprisingly fun, well-written and lighthearted romantic comedy.
Ellen is convinced that the only way to meet a man is for him to fit a list of compatibility criteria. Falling in love on a whim and without knowing knowing anything about the person is crazy, right? She has two ‘perfect’ dates lined up with ‘perfect’ matches, but then she meets a man that knocks her off her feet and makes her question everything she believes in. Her foolproof date seemed like such a tool, as soon as I read his email I was screaming ‘don’t go on that date!’ I liked how strong she was, though, she didn’t pander to the dates nor waste her time.
I remember having such a list when I was internet dating, my husband contacted me on one of the sites, and he didn’t match any of my criteria. However, he had just eaten Cadbury’s tasters (hardly anyone knows what they are, but they are my favourite!). That is the only reason I replied, we met fell in love, and 15 years later we are still together, married and very happy. So I could really resonate and connect with this story. We all want to meet the perfect match, but sometimes the ideal man isn’t who you expect!
It’s a really feel-good, fast-paced and pleasant read. Really glad I took a chance on this when I saw it on Booksprout.
