I have spent time in Papua, Indonesia, and in the Baliem Valley where this historical event took place. I enjoyed learning about this episode during WWII so much! What an amazing encounter with the Stone Age people of that beautiful valley. While the loss of life was tragic, the story of the survivors is truly inspiring.
True story of survival after plane accident on island in the midst of WWII
A true story that is a great story!
What a wonderful true story. It highlights the true grit, stamina, team and group efforts that our military people develop and utilize no matter the circumstances they find themselves in. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Wonderful true WWII story. I zipped through this looking for a happy ending. The ending was great especially with the follow up on the characters more than 50 years later.
Interesting account of a real occurrence…
amazing story from beginning to end
Although some reviewers did not like the background information on so many characters which lengthened the book, I appreciated it to give a better understanding of the real lives of each of the people, where they were from etc.
You will have a hard time putting this book down. A C-47 crashes in a valley with stone age natives. Only 3 survive but the mountains are so high choppers can not get to the valley. Valley floor is too rough for aircraft to land but they are need ing medical help immediately. All of this TRUE. The rescue is due one man efforts with a daring idea.
Not much of a story
Just finished reading. This is one of those books that is hard to put down it was so interesting. Even though I am an avid WWII reader I had never heard of this area of New Guinea and the event and the book describes. Definitely recommend.
Lost in Shangri-La is a wonderful book. I really enjoyed all of the facts about WWII and the South Pacific.
An excellent telling of a true story that made world headlines. The author sets us up with the backgrounds of each of the participants and life on a south Pacific island during WWII. As a leisure gift, a small group are taken on a difficult air tour of this island paradise looking for the hidden “Shangri-la” valley…only to crash into an …
