What’s not to like: stone age people meet glider flying crazy white people. Nobody got killed (except in a airplane crash in the jungle. They must be gods!
Very old book.
This book kept my attention to the end.
very informative. a great read very enjoyable.
very dry and awkward rendering of what should be fascinating facts
Good story well told
True story….WWII military plane crash in New Guinea!!! The saga of getting the survivors out of the mountainous, dense jungle with cannibal natives and the relationship between the U.S. plane crash survivors and the local natives. Fabulous read, even if you are not “into WWII”!
Way too many details
.
I liked this book! Gives you a great sense of time… WWII…. in a fascinating place, the jungles of Borneo. The descriptions of the native population by the actual participants were balanced by the later observations and insights of the author. Given they did not speak the language , the participants were not far off the mark.
Interesting.
True story during WWII.
I am surprised that I had never heard of this terrible accident. I have read tons of books about that time in history. Amazing read about the fortitude of the people involved. It actually could be made into a very interesting and exciting movie.
Now I want to know about the many, many Japanese soldiers that were still in New Guinea at that time. …
I really enjoyed learning about a incident from WWII that was big news in the day. An essentially a sightseeing flight turned to tragedy when the plane crashed. The 3 survivors story and eventual rescue was a protracted process. The narrative is very good – entertaining without being maudlin or overly dramatic. A very good read
Historical and was pleased to find the woman was from a town very near and familiar to me. Learned interesting information about the second world war.
Very interesting read about a true incident.
This is a very good look at what some vets went through
Good book on a nearly unknown area of the world. A true story, altho tragic.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and bought it for three other people who also loved it. It was informative as well. There is so much I didn’t know about women’s roles in the Great War or the base at Guam. This book included real photos and letters and made you feel like you knew the characters. I can’t say enough about this great read…
What a great story and a great writer! Takes the reader back to another time and a new place. Could NOT put it down.
A wondefully written and very informative, well-researched true story of survivors of a plane crash in the jungles of New Guinea and their rescue during World War II. My father-in-law was a pilot based in New Guinea near the time of this story, so it holds extra meaning for me, as it gives me greater insight into a time he seldom spoke about.
