Lost in Shangri-la introduced me to the island of New Guinea. I knew of it geographically, but had no idea of the native people groups and its place in world War II. It is an incredible story of human character in the midst of unexpected adversity. The geographic descriptions are gorgeous…the character, strength, and wit of the military …
I haven’t quite finished it but I love a great survival story. True story’s are the best
My husband and I have lived not far from the crash site.
I just finished reading “Lost in Shangri-La” by Mitchell Zuckoff, and I must say that it was a fascinating read. Zuckoff is a former award-winning Boston Globe reporter who recounts the exciting, and true story of an dangerous World War II rescue mission, where a plane crash drops three members of the U.S. military straight in the land that time …
I personally think Mitchell Zuckoff does a remarkable job of describing real-life events in an engage the reader way. This story isn’t quite the “action-packed, page-turner” of a thriller novel, but by the end of the book I am very glad I read it. I can confidently say I learned something about an event that I didn’t know previously. I also like …
As someone who lived for a number of years in Papua, Indonesia, and who was generally familiar with the Shangri-La story, I was impressed by the richly detailed, careful research which comprise the foundation of the work. The characters, both the local tribes people, the survivors, and the rescuers all come to life in this winsomely written …
Very interesting survival story and nice to know the “after the story” details. In places it’s a little dry in the telling but well worth reading.
Normally I read only novels, but found Lost In Shangri-la informative about an era before my birth.
It was easy to read (even had pictures) and kept my interest. I appreciated all the research the writer did.
Lost in Shangri-La is the true story of three members of the U.S. military, including one WAC, who survive a horrific plane crash that kills 21 of their friends and colleagues, deep in the New Guinea jungle. I have a hard time putting my thoughts about this book into words because it is so impossible that it’s hard to believe it really happened. …
A great piece of American history few have heard of.
I loved this book because I’m a history buff. It was well written and keep me interested the whole time.
All new information to me.
Great read about military history
Too much background information took away from the plight of the characters. I got so tired of reading about subplots that I Iost sympathy for the characters. Poorly written.
Unfortunately it is a lesson in history with a tragic outcome. Told by outside party
Learned so much about this event.
If you are a WWII historian you will enjoy this book.
A well researched and well told survival story. Highly recommended.
Unbelievably true story. Good for book club discussion.
Great read and forgotten history.
