From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook—a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is… favorite—lost boy to his greatest enemy.
Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter’s idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword. Because it’s never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock—the kinds of playthings that bite.
Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever. Peter lies.

Definitely the most fun I’ve had with a book in a long time.
Peter Pan has always been quite the iffy story for me. He always struck me as a creepy kind of character. A super old boy stuck in a young boy’s body, dragging young children to an island. Super odd. So therefore, I was always intrigued by Captain Hook! And this was truly his story!
Jamie was relatable, completely relatable, even though he had done heinous things over the years. Yet, it was all because of Peter’s urge to “play.” I loved Jamie because he was like a daddy hen to a lot of the boys, especially Charlie. And there were twists and turns along the way. Since this is prequel, I’m sure you guys know how it all ends, but it is the character driven story that gets you there that is truly unique and horrific! And it definitely can be gruesome!
I’ve read a couple other books by Henry, and like the others, this one did not disappoint whatsoever! The world was terrifying with devious deceptions hidden in small places, and it was one that I couldn’t get out of my head, even after reading!
Love Peter Pan? Hate Captain Hook? Well then this book is NOT for you. Lost Boy takes the form of a dark twisted Captain Hook origin story. But unlike the usual retelling novel, Christiana Henry weaves a new story that doesn’t constantly spit out: HEY I’M A PETER PAN FANFIC. This is not that kind of story; it is something different and original (with tons of dark bloody violence, but I swear it’s tolerable). Within a few pages the island came alive and I didn’t want to leave. Though full of deathly secrets, this island is what dreams are made of and that’s exactly what it is to the Lost Boys, at first. Seeing through the eyes of a young Captain Hook will change your perspective on Neverland for good. By the end of the book you too will be saying: “I hate Peter Pan.”
“It is a fantastic lie.”
I’ve always been the devil’s advocate when it comes to villains because monsters are made, not born right? Well, when it comes to Captain Hook, Christina Henry gives us all the dark, bloody details related to how Hook’s hatred and vengeance gained its shape. It’s not a pretty story. Hook wasn’t always the villain. In fact, according to Christina Henry’s imagination, you may be shocked to learn who the true villain really was.
I love retellings and reimagined prequels, and Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook is an excellent one. If you’re in the mood for a fairytale with a high body count, check out Lost Boy. You may never watch the Peter Pan film the same way again.
Okay so wow just wow. This book was seriously something else. The plot was so well written. The characters had so much to them. Recommend this book 100%
Y’ALL! This is the Peter Pan re-telling I’ve been waiting for. It was so dark and delicious and completely perfect. I loved it so, so much. This is the book that pulled me out of my two year plus reading slump. I struggle with being an author and “reading for fun” these days, but LOST BOY reminded me how entertaining and gleeful reading can still be for me.
