Alexandra Winifred has played a supporting role in her cousin’s life since they were children. When Lauren Water’s parents are killed in a plane crash, Alexandra becomes her protector, and together they navigate their way through childhood and college. They’re both overachievers, but it’s Lauren who steals the spotlight when she’s discovered by a notable agent and goes on to become an … award-winning actress, leaving Alexandra in her shadow as her fledgling publicist.
Now Hollywood royalty, Lauren starts to cut those people out of her life who were responsible for her success. Alexandra fears she will be next on the chopping block. But her trepidation about her failing relationship with her cousin becomes her least concern when she’s identified as a prime suspect in Lauren’s subsequent disappearance. Detective Rachel Storme, who has a full plate taking care of a parent with Alzheimer’s and supervising a meth-addicted aunt, is eager to get her hands on a challenging case, but nothing could prepare her for the dark secrets and lies that she uncovers while she does everything in her power to find out what happened to Lauren.

A difficult book to get into. I did not finish the book.
great read. definitely will look for more of books from this author.
Didn’t want the book to end
Not my fave book.
I couldn’t out it down.
I loved this book!
Very suspenseful.
Full of twists and turns.
Kinda interesting
it was a captivating read for a Friday night. I enjoyed the suspense.
Detective Rachel is back in her second mystery and I say, Yeah!! Love, love Rachel and her team as they try and solve a missing person case. And the pressure is on as Lauren just won the best actress award and is now gone…leaving behind some blood and hair on her award.
Her cousin Alex is worried and wonders
which if their friends might be involved and if Lauren is dead or held captive. You see the case through the detectives eyes and Alex’s and the author does a bang up job of letting you glimpse the case and see why it is so hard. And between the ex fiance accused of molestation of boys, to her manager and the staff Lauren was letting go, to poor Alex herself….lots of suspects but all deserving to be studied.
And Larry, ugh, Alex’s boyfriend is not making this case any easier nor is her father Rev Julian or her mother Pam or the actress competing against Lauren, Rosalind.
This is entertaining and yet with depth and heart as you discover the real Lauren and if you reread this book, congratulate the author as all the proof is there with few red herrings. It shows the many sides of a case, what it’s like to worry for your friend, what it’s like to suspect your friends and the horror of then being investigated yourself to the final solution that really shocked me.
A very well-written mystery that kept me guessing up until the reveal. And while I did figure out parts of it, I didn’t figure out the “bad guy”. There was really only one thing I didn’t like about this book and it’s a personal preference type thing-I don’t like first person, present tense point of view. It feels awkward and doesn’t flow smoothly in my opinion. Also, changing character narration between two characters from one chapter to the next took some getting used to, in the end it didn’t really bother me too much. Bottom line, I like Ms Thomas’ writing well enough that even considering I don’t like this point of view I will be reading the other two books of hers that I have on my Kindle. If you try this book, I don’t think you will be disappointed. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review.
