Can love truly overcome anything? The ‘Shadows’ are now all wed and settled – save for one. Lady Ann is the only one left unmarried, feeling alone and set apart from the others. It is just as well that she has found herself sought out by Lady Sapphira. The lady is desperate for the ‘Shadows’ to help her discover who has been sending her poison pen letters, finding each one more distressing than … distressing than the last.
Throwing herself headlong into solving the puzzle and protecting Lady Sapphira, Ann cannot help but notice one particular acquaintance, Lord Aldridge. But can she really allow her feelings to grow without being certain that he is not involved in any way?
Lord Aldridge cannot help but be interested in Lady Sapphira’s new acquaintance. Lady Ann is charming and rather refreshing in her manner, but when he discovers the reason for her friendship, everything changes.
When the mystery slowly begins to unravel itself, Lady Ann finds a terrible dilemma set before her. Will Lord Aldridge ever forgive her? Or will their friendship fracture and break, forever?

4.5 STARS – CLEAN
I purchased this as part of a 5 novella bundle called LADIES, LOVE AND MYSTERIES. It is a stand alone but as with most series does have cross over character’s.
Romance is not in this story or the others very much. There is suspense and mystery to keep you entertained. The h is not a character I warmed too and the H at times seemed weak. But, the story was engaging and had many elements to it.
I did figure out who the villain was but still the journey to solve the mystery didn’t lessen the story for me.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, no romance or spice, but a story I did enjoy. (ljb)
Joyce Alec writes captivating mysteries with outstanding characters who are courageous and smart. There is always a puzzle to solve.
Lady Ann is the only member of “the Shadows” who hasn’t found her man. Will she find her happily ever after with Lord Aldridge?

A historical novel in which The Shadows play a leading role.
Lady Ann is the last in their group who is unmarried and feels a bit like an outsider. Then a young woman approaches her seeking her help as the shadow. Someone in the beau monde has been after her, but she doesn’t know who. Lady Ann is going to help her. One of the suspects is Lord Aldridge. And no matter how Lady Ann tries to protect her heart, he sneaks in there anyway. What if he’s to blame?
A wonderful, easy to read story. Part of a series but can be read alone

I have very much enjoyed the antics of the Shadows. Lady Ann is the only remaining unwed Shadow, and feeling the loss of her friends as they start their new lives. Of course, we know this will be her chance, dont we? As she tries to help Lady Sapphira solve the poison pen letters she is also introduced to Lord Alec (Mark) and there is distrust between them at first. Once the Shadows step in to help solve the mystery, and give us an enjoyable read.

This is another story in “The Shadows” series. It is a standalone but I enjoyed reading the others as well. This is the tale of Lady Ann who is feeling down and left out because she is the only one in the group who has not found her man. When she meets Lord Aldridge she isn’t certain he isn’t the culprit they are looking for, but she still feels something different for him. She is smart and assertive and he seems a little wimpy when we first meet them. In the end, there is a happy ever after, the mystery is solved and everyone else has a good resolution. I would recommend this for anyone who likes a good Regency romance.

A wonderful and enticing mystery. The last of The Shadows may find a partner. There were most wonderful characters and so many suspects in this mystery that I did not know which way to turn! Thoroughly enjoyable. I hope we get to see more of Lady Sapphira!

Lady Sapphira approached Lady Ann, one of The Shadows, with the mystery to solve of who was threatening her with secret notes. Mark, Lord Aldridge thinks of Lady Sapphira as another sister since she is close to his own and he wants to assist in solving this mystery. There are many suspects, although I had a hunch early on who was behind everything. The attacks escalate with a broken carriage and several attempts at compromising Lady Sapphira as they work to determine the culprit. This was clean Regency romantic mystery with plenty of suspense.
I am always excited when another Joyce Alec book comes my way! This story features the last of The Shadows, Lady Ann. This series has brought me so much fun and entertainment, and this book is no different. Ms. Alec does an amazing job of creating intrigue, suspense, and mystery woven with a good dose of romance, that you cannot help but become engrossed in the story. I particularly enjoy how she brings you right into the story by providing such vivid details about the scenes taking place. I feel as if I am right there experiencing it for myself. If you’re looking for a clean romance with a bit of mystery and excitement, this is the perfect one to settle down with on a lazy afternoon. I’ve really enjoyed reading about the ladies of The Shadows and I can’t wait to see what delightful stories Ms. Alec will bring us next!

Lady Sapphira is receiving very distressing poison pen letters indicating that she is unsuitable to be in society. She seeks out Lady Ann at a ball and asks her and “The Shadows: to find out who is sending the letters and why. “The Shadows” accepts the assignment and Lady Ann is takes the lead and she immediately begins to get acquainted with Lady Sapphira’s close friends.
Lord Aldridge (who thinks of Lady Sapphira as his sister and wants to protest her) becomes involved in the investigation. Lord Aldridge is the brother of Lady Sapphira’s best friend who was just married last season after being involved with a notorious rake. During the work on the problem, both Lady Ann and Lord Aldridge development romantic feelings for each other. As the solution to the mystery become obvious to Lady Ann, she is very apprehensive about telling Lord Aldridge of her suspicions. In the end Lady Ann becomes betrothed to Lord Aldridge and sill soon join the other “Shadows” in a happy marriage.
This is the fifth of Joyce Alex’s “Ladies, Love and Mysteries Series” and joins the first four as an excellent tale. It is highly recommended and should not be missed.
Book five in the Ladies, Love, and Mysteries series a well written story with a very good storyline. Lady Ann is the last single Shadow, and her case will deal with what is happening to Lady Sapphira, and Lord Aldridge who counts Sapphira as another sister will get involved. There is suspense, drama, danger, twists, turns, misunderstanding, evil intent, and romance. I hope there is more to come in this series. Lady Ann, a member of the Shadows who solve mysteries and provide help to ladies who need them, is the only one of the shadow members still not married. She is approached by a mutual friend of hers and Lord Aldridge, Lady Sapphira, who is receiving increasingly threatening letters for some reason. In the beginning, Lady Ann is not sure Lord Aldridge can be trusted and may be involved in this situation, but he is only there to help. Can they discover the person threatening Lady Sapphira before something more dangerous happens? Will they recognize something in each other along the way to finding answers?
I really love this author’s books, and especially this mystery series with the Shadows. The characters are outstanding, courageous and smart. The story line always catches the reader’s attention and provides a fun puzzle to solve. Grab your copy and enjoy the chase!

A wrong belief could be deadly.
Lady Ann is on a mission to help Lady Sapphira and just like all the cases of the Shadows this one will have its challenges. Lord Aldridge finds Lady Sapphira’s friend interesting yet things may change his feelings. This was a good story a clean romance and a surprising villain. I enjoyed the book it is written well with a great cast of characters both Ann and Mark were awesome. If you want a clean, quick, and charming read this is the book to pick up. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Poison Pen
When I read I like to become one with the book. No matter how much I enjoy the read it’s so much more satisfying when I can become the book. And Joyce Alec manages to afford me this with every book she writes. One caution, this can be read as a stand-alone but will be much easier to follow if you read at least on of the previous books in the Ladies, Love and Mysteries series so you have a little who’s who background on the Shadows. The Shadows are a group of enterprising young ladies who always solve their mysteries and find love along the way. This is Lady Ann’s happy ever after and thanks to Lady Sapphira predicament she becomes entangled with Mark, the Earl of Aldridge. Lady Sapphira is on the receiving end of some very nasty letters and seeks out the Shadows for help. The Earl of Aldridge is brother to Susanna, Lady Hastings whom Sapphira helped to save from ruination the previous season. At first Ann and Mark are suspicious of one another which is reasonable as they are both trying to protect Sapphira. I knew from the very beginning who the villain was. So I was very surprised when the true villain was revealed. Thank you Joyce Alec! And although Lady Ann was the last Shadow I hope Lady Sapphira finds true love I have a thought of who that might be. But that I guess would be best left to Joyce.
