Anthony is a down-on-his-luck gambler who meets Charlotte who is running from her past to find her future. They meet in Scotland and accidentally marry each other. There is a deadline on their lives together, however, because if he doesn’t pay off his debt, he will go to debtor’s prison. They come up with some creative ways to make money before the deadline. This story was quite different from the usual boy meets girl type of book.
Not for me
Lord Of Chance by Erica Ridley is, as expected, fantastic. Ms Ridley has once again wow’d me with her storytelling abilities. This is a well-written book loaded with amazing characters. Charlotte and Anthony’s story is full of drama, bits of suspense, a little humor and spice. I totally enjoyed reading Lord Of Chance and look forward to reading more from Erica Ridley in the future. Lord Of Chance is book 1 of the Rogues To Riches Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Good book.
Was it luck or a meticulous plan?
Anthony Fairfax has always been a man considered lucky in the game. However, in life, his luck was lacking.
He urgently needed a lump sum to pay off all his debts and be able to return to London with his head held high.
So here he was, in a game house in a distant place, between England and Scotland.
The lucky night seemed to be his, especially after he had spotted a mysterious lady. He nicknamed her mentally Lady Fortune.
Then, later, this lady approached the table and wanted to play. She dressed well and was adorned with rich rubies, a danger in that place.
At the end of the evening, a surprise: the luck was really with the Lady, and she wins it in the game by snatching the prize of 200 thousand pounds.
Given the bet they had made, Anthony accompanied Miss Devon – that was her real name – to the door of her bedroom. And as she was nearly attacked by a drunk, Anthony spoke loud and clear that she was his wife.
To keep up appearances, he spends the night in her bedroom, but sleeps on the chaise long.
In the morning, while having breakfast in the living room, Anthony is questioned by two men at the behest of Maxwell Gideon, the man Anthony owed money to. They say that if he did not pay within the stipulated time, they would go after his wife.
For Anthony that meant nothing because he was not married. And he says this to the men, to protect Miss Devon. But Anthony forgot one thing: he was in Scotland.
There was a law that it was enough for the people involved to say loudly that they were married that this became a fact. And now, Charlotte Devon was stuck with Anthony. He owned her money, her jewelry and her life…
Charlotte was on her way to Scotland in search of her father, who did not even know of her existence. Charlotte’s mother, Judith Devon, had been a famous courtesan, and those rubies had been a gift from Charlotte’s father. She then carried them in the hope that her father would remember her mother and recognize her.
But now she had one more problem in her life: she had arranged a handsome husband, good at gambling, but full of debt, and with a wanted head.
While one tries to help the other to solve their problem, feelings begin to blend in and perhaps there is the possibility of no divorce, but rather a happily ever after…
The plot is amazing but I didn’t feel connected with the main characters.
I hope the next story can bring the spark I always found in Erica’s books
3,5 stars
Mr Anthony Fairfax is a lord, but his family has no source of income, so at the age of 14, when he discovered fortune favored him at the gaming tables, he became his family’s sole source of income. An actual job in Trade would have destroyed the family’s reputation. We find him gambling in a Scottish pub, lady luck finally smiling at him after he had suffered devastating losses and was so much debt, he could shortly end up in debtor’s prison if he doesn’t come up with a small fortune. He fancied that his luck was from the presence of a lovely lady, sitting in the shadows of the salon. Miss Charlotte Devon is the daughter of a courtesan. She has been looked down on all her life and now has come to Scotland, searching for her father. Trying to protect her from advances by some men, Anthony says that she is his wife and she concurs, neither knowing that under some obscure Scottish law, that makes them husband and wife. Somehow they need to work together to come up with the funds to keep Anthony out of prison.
The reader is immediately drawn into the story. Both Anthony and Charlotte are such endearing characters that the reader wants them to find a way out of their predicament, while realizing that they have found what they had been searching for in each other. A lovely read.
unique story about a gambling man that gambles to keep his family fed & a prostitue’s daughter looking for her father.
I would say it’s a silly fun book, the hero is kind of unwise but the woman is dedicated to her mission. but for those who want to pass time on a plane or the beach, this book is entertaining enough
I always like a HEA story. But these characters had to work to get there. I would read it again.
Good book
As usual, another hit for Ms. Ridley!!!
A great read with fun characters.
Enjoyed it very much
This author is usually one of my favorites, for her sparkling and humorous romances, but this book was not a favorite.
Once again Miss Ridley proofs what a terrific writer she is.
It was slow and I had trouble getting into it. The characters and setting were somewhat unbelievable.
Cute but kind of strange.
Enjoyable and clean story but a bit predictable.
Love it
I wasn’t sure how well I’d like a book where everyone was broke, after all there was debtors prison in this day. How the author managed to take this premise and make a book that I thoroughly enjoyed showed a real talent. I love to read and will even read a book that I’m criticizing as I continue to read. That makes a book like this, one I really liked, even more special.
