Mr Anthony Fairfax is trying to regain his fortunes by gambling in a posting house in Scotland. His creditors are pushing hard. If he can’t raise the cash to clear his debts he could be imprisoned. The London gaming hells he calls home have shut him out. At last it looks like Lady Fortune might be smiling on him.
Miss Charlotte Devon is in Scotland looking for her father. The only clue she has are the rubies he gave her mother. She has spent all her life trying to be as different as possible from her mother. Looking exactly like a well known courtesan means she is looked down on by even the poorest in town.
This is an emotional story of two people trying desperately to escape from the past and be respectable. Lots of fun and lovely characters. This is the first book in a series that I’m sure I will be reading much more of.
Good fun.
Enjoyed the twist of the woman winning the man in a bet, and the accidental marriage. Enjoyable story with several interesting twists.
Anthony and Charlotte are the main characters in Lord of Chance who end up getting married by accident. He is a lovable rapscallion who loves to gamble and is evading debt collectors. She is looking for a father she has never known as well as wishing to be accepted by society. A greatly enjoyable read worthy of 4 to 4 1/2 stars.
While this is overall light-hearted, there are serious undertones. The charming survival artist Anthony Fairfax is threatened with debtor’s prison. I found the scene wherein Charlotte realizes her fantasies of her Scottish laird father are in fact fantasies very moving. She’s shattered. Her mortification is palpable. Very well done. Fortunately there’s a very happy ending.
Lord of Chance by Erica Ridley
Rogues to Riches #1
Great way to start a new series of Regency romances that will, if similar to this first book, be quite different from others of this genre. Why? Because the rogues are not your typical hero and the females are atypical, too. That said – I believe these books will definitely be worth reading. I look forward to reading the series as it is released and wonder how the author will find ways to redeem the rogues she writes about.
A gambling addict running from his debts finds himself losing a large purse, his bachelor status and possibly his heart to a young woman searching for her birth-father in Scotland. Both have secret desires to be loved and accepted for more than they believe others see them to be. Both grow through their journey from first to last page. Both learn truths about themselves, their beliefs about self and others and find a place to fit in the world that they might never have found had then not met one fateful night. I liked Charlotte, her tenacity and ability to rise above the station she began in life. I found Ethan charming and applauded his ability to finally overcome the addiction that could have seen him in prison. I enjoyed reading the growing relationship between the two main characters and though some of the story might not be realistic did like the HEA ending that was assisted by an unlikely benefactor or two.
Books in the Series:
Lord of Chance
Lord of Pleasure
Lord of Night
Lord of Temptation
Lord of Secrets
Lord of Vice
Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.
4 Stars
A quick read, but held my attention. I enjoyed the new slant towards the peerage of the time period in which it’s written.
I enjoyed reading this book. I would recommend it to my friends that like to read.
Charming characters strive to get themselves out of a jam – clever and entertaining.
Always like an Erica Ridley book. Well written..
I really liked the characters and setting. It was a nice escape from reality!
Some interesting twists and turns.
Men as Cinderella are theme of This series, with a twist.we are introduced to a different set of rules and ideas. This first book in the series sets up what you THINK will happen. Erica Ridley then gives it a fun exciting twist.

Wanting him to watch guard over her room is the only thing she asks for. While on the way to her room they argue and disturb some guests. To shut the guests up the two of them say they are married but not realizing in Scotland that makes them actually married.
Now with them series and being kidnapped, one thing leads to another which have them both wanting what might not be possible. That is until a friend of Anthony’s gives them an out that will have both getting what they dreamed of but didn’t know.
So come along for a rip roaring good ride with great characters, thrilling adventures, and a story you won’t want to put down.
Charlotte and Antony both wish to eventually marry for love and respect. Neither believe they have good prospects for marriage because of life circumstances. By chance, they pretend to be married but it causes more problems; soon they long for their future outlook to be better than appears to be. The characters are endearing.
Erica Ridley’s books are always a delight. Try one of the free books and you will be hooked. Also, if you sign up to her list you get free goodies on your birthday. What could be better than that. Settle in for a great series.
couldn’t put it down.
Ended up skipping to the end. I guess the characters never really hooked me.
“Lord of Chance” is another winner–delightful and entertaining–from the talented Ms. Ridley. I especially loved the hero, Anthony Fairfax. He was the perfect flawed hero. When he finds himself accidentally married to Ms. Charlotte Devon, he does everything he can to protect his wife, but Anthony is a gambler on a losing streak. Thugs are following him and if doesn’t pay the full amount he owes, he’ll end up in debtors prison. Where would that leave Charlotte? He can’t let that happen.
This book was another enjoyable read. The witty banter between the characters is a hallmark of Ms. Ridley’s books. She writes strong heroines who aren’t afraid to admit they have brains, unlike most of the young ladies of the Regency period. This is a fast read and satisfying to the last page. Recommended.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I enjoyed the story and the writing
This story shows how kindness is greatest part of love between people. An exciting story of misfortune and promising future with endurance.
Love all her books as she develops each character.
