NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Diana Gabaldon weaves a dazzling tale of history, intrigue, and suspense in this first novel featuring one of her most popular characters from the Outlander saga: Lord John Grey. The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, Grey … His Majesty’s army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear.
Praise for Lord John and the Private Matter
“[A] thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully witty historical mystery set in the richly detailed, occasionally bawdy world of Georgian England.”—Booklist
“Packed with vivid description and detail. Gabaldon aptly transports readers to eighteenth-century London, with all its reeking humanity and glitteringly elegant excess.”—BookPage

All of her books are fabulous but I prefer the Outlander Series.
Love all her books and characters related to the Outlander series.
Boring
I love the whole Outlander series, and although Lord John isn’t one of the central characters, he does pop in & out throughout the books. This was a great way to get more of a feel of his life story & fill in a few gaps! As with all the Oulander books, there’s a ton of detail in how life was lived during the 1700’s, so it does involve history.
I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, and won’t be surprised if Lord John is in this one as well.
I highly recommend “Lord John & the Private Matter”!
LOVE Diana Gabaldon!
Great characters, intriguing and wonderfully written story. I can’t wait to read the next installment of Lord John.
I love Diana Gaboldon’s Lord John series. What a delightful character! His mother, his brother, and his friends are equally delightful characters!
As all hers, outstanding readability.
Unrealistic with bizarre consulions.Entertaining in an unusual way.
If you’ve read Outlander you’ll love the saga of John Grey.
As a fan of the Lord John character and Ms Gabaldon’s three-dimensional development of it, I enjoyed this foray into the complexities of his world. I admit to getting a bit befuddled mid-story by the sheer number of characters who seemed to have little connection to the puzzle (I blame my habit of reading late at night for this,) but the ending was satisfying and loose ends were fastened. Good read!
I absolutely love all books by MS. GABALDON.
Excellent, as are all Gabaldon’s books. Not the intense detail of her Outlander books, but very well done. Great characters, interesting plots with lots of plot you don’t see coming, all set wonderfully into proper historical context. My favorite author.
I love Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. I liked the background information that this added to the series, but I don’t want to read the rest of the Lord John series. I prefer my romance novels in the heterosexual genre. Highly recommend her Outlander series though.
I loved this book. Lord John Grey is one of the best characters in the Outlander series. So good to read a book from his perspective.
Gabaldon builds characters that are both real and immensely likeable, inspite of or perhaps because of, their flaws.
Lord John is an enormously fun read.
Anything by Diana Gabaldon is worth reading!
It’s wonderfully written by Diana Gabaldon- Outlander.
Not as good as some of the other Lord John books.
All of her books are great…can’t put them down
