NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Diana Gabaldon weaves a dazzling tale of history, intrigue, and suspense in this first novel featuring one of her most popular characters from the Outlander saga: Lord John Grey. The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, Grey … His Majesty’s army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear.
Praise for Lord John and the Private Matter
“[A] thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully witty historical mystery set in the richly detailed, occasionally bawdy world of Georgian England.”—Booklist
“Packed with vivid description and detail. Gabaldon aptly transports readers to eighteenth-century London, with all its reeking humanity and glitteringly elegant excess.”—BookPage

Good romp through historical mystery
I liked it as part of the whole outlander series.
Great way to getto know this character better. Fits into the Outlander series best once you know him
Not as good as the Outlander series but a good read as well
Having been a Diana Gaboldon fan for decades, I was dissappointed in this one. It’s as thought she phoned it in. The character were unlikeable and the plot line thin.
Disappointing, I liked the series by Gabaldon.
Didn’t care for this one
Lord John is a troubled soul yet the author brings him and his issues to life.
Helps one through “”Droughtlander”. I enjoyed the references back to various Outlander story lines. And Lord John Grey is quite entertaining! A fun and smart twist on the ongoing saga.
Love Lord John.
A good read. Not as great as the Outlander series. Has good historical information and Lord John is a good character.
Anything Diana Gabaldon writes is a book you want a cup of coffee or better yet, a cocktail as you locate a private place to read where no one will disturb you until your eyes are tired! Hah! Lord John may be ac-dc but manages to be sexy anyhow.Buy it and get others in series then go pick up the entire Outlander series.
Very easy read with interesting characters.
it was okay. i read all her books but this one was just okay
A fun read. Good for a quiet afternoon.
Love all Outlander relatedbooks
not what I expected, but very good
The characters in this book were fairly well developed with a couple of exceptions (notably the husband of the protagonist), and for the most part likeable. The story revolves around a young woman and her adolescent children who struggle to adapt to the isolation and inconveniences of island life while the woman examines her life and her marriage. For me, the best part was the glimpse into life on an island, which was well described. The conclusion was somewhat predictable, but overall I enjoyed the book.
If you are a fan of the Outlander series but have run out of books you’ll enjoy this series based on Lord John Grey.
I like the Outlander series, Lord John was not as exciting as Jamie.
