NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Diana Gabaldon weaves a dazzling tale of history, intrigue, and suspense in this first novel featuring one of her most popular characters from the Outlander saga: Lord John Grey. The year is 1757. On a clear morning in mid-June, Lord John Grey emerges from London’s Beefsteak Club, his mind in turmoil. A nobleman and a high-ranking officer in His Majesty’s army, Grey … His Majesty’s army, Grey has just witnessed something shocking. But his efforts to avoid a scandal that might destroy his family are interrupted by something still more urgent: The Crown appoints him to investigate the brutal murder of a comrade-in-arms who may have been a traitor. Obliged to pursue two inquiries at once, Major Grey finds himself ensnared in a web of treachery and betrayal that touches every stratum of English society—and threatens all he holds dear.
Praise for Lord John and the Private Matter
“[A] thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully witty historical mystery set in the richly detailed, occasionally bawdy world of Georgian England.”—Booklist
“Packed with vivid description and detail. Gabaldon aptly transports readers to eighteenth-century London, with all its reeking humanity and glitteringly elegant excess.”—BookPage

Easy read . Good for people who follow “Outlander” wasn’t as exciting as an Outlander story. Interesting to learn how LGBTQ folks met others like them. I thought they would be much more secretive, but it was still punishable by death.
Lord John is fine as a secondary character in the main series IMHO, but not interesting enough to be the hero in his own right. I purchased this book thinking I would learn more about Jamie’s life, but it truly is all about John. I realize Ms Gabaldon became interested in John and wanted to explore where he would take her. I would prefer she finish the original series then focus on John if she chooses. To me, writing about the less interesting John merely decreases the time she has to write about Claire and Jamie making it an unbearably long time between books. The book was well written, but drug along and was difficult to get through. I do not plan to purchase any more of the Lord John books.
It’s a novella, an aside from the main Outlander books. It fills in interesting character info and happenings of Lord John, but otherwise it does not have the depth nor the excellent writing as in the main books.
Not up to her proceeding books
Not as good as outlander book. Fine for the beach.
I kept reading, expecting Diana G to have written something worth reading. This was not. Mundane, predictable and certainly not up to the Outlander standards. Disappointing.
I love the entire Outlander Series, this book gives Lord John a book of his own.
Great historical fiction
The “Lord John” series is an “ammendment or adjunct” series to Outlander – her HUGE, PHENOMENALLY AWESOME best seller!!!!!! For OUTLANDER fans, this will fill in many missing pieces! (The “backstory,” if you will!) Once more, EVERYTHING SHOULD BE READ IN ORDER!!!!!!!!!!!! There are things that will not fit in if you choose to do it another way!!!!! I wish you the joy of first-reading!!!!!! 🙂
interesting
I love Lord John. He is a complex character and Diana’s books are always captivating.
I have never been disappointed with any of her books. I have read all of them, and many times twice. All of her characters have depth, and intertwined plot lines that you follow for decades.
The Lord John series is a must read for Diana Gabaldon fans. Learn more about John and his life and ties to the main series.
Typical Diana Gabaldon with strong characters and historical backgrounds. A look at a character featured in the Outlander” series with a parellel story. Great for fans and newcomers alike!
A truly unusual book for those who relish Diana Gabaldon’s characters.
Lord John, one of my favorite characters from The Outlander series, is at it again. I love these short stories from Gabaldon, they keep me at bay between releases of her big long novels! She always entertains and educates her readers, you are mesmerized till the every end.
This is a novella offering more information on a character from the Outlander series. If you’ve read the series this is interesting. It can stand alone but means more if you know the characters from the other books.
Love everything this author writes. The Lord John books are an entertaining look at one Outlander character.
Another great book by Diana Gabaldon
I love all the Outlander books! Must reading!
