Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It’s seared into Atlee Pine’s memory: the kidnapper’s chilling rhyme as he chose … chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.
She never saw Mercy again.
Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She’s the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.
So when one of the Grand Canyon’s mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she’s abruptly called off the case.
If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it…

Well written book. Intriguing story line with excellent characters. Action, some romance and adventure mixed together for a hard to put down book.
Enjoyed it but what about mercy???
David Baldacci delivers. He introduces a new gutsy, likeable heroine, Atlee Pine. He sets his story in the Grand Canyon. It is easy to picture where the action takes place. This book is a thriller with a touch of romance. You will enjoy it.
I will read anything this man writes..i think he has created some of the best and most memorable characters and Mercy is now added to my fave. Cant wait to follow this young woman thru many more adventures.
Atlee Pine is a bad ass heroine! Plot was a little far fetched but I learned so many things about rural Arizona, Indian reservationists and above all, the Grand Canyon! Can’t wait to follow the road to Mercy!
Loved the story and couldn’t put it down. One of David Baldacci’s best. Of course, I love all of his books, series and characters. Look forward to the next in this series. I liked Amos Decker series, but this one has a tough female FBI agent who is honorable and doesn’t step away from trouble to find the truth. Good read.
Not as easy to read as his previous books. The Atlee Pine character has potential, but the development within this initial offering was lacking.
Couldn’t put it down till I finished it. Loved it suspenseful till the end. Loved all of Baldacci books.
An interesting rerad
Sharp read. Barack never disappoints.
The characters were great and well developed. However, I was very disappointed with the over complicated and unrealistic plot.
Baldacci writes very entertaining novels.
Great new character by Baldacci.
I’ve read everything Baldacci has written. They are all better than anything else.
I’m a D. B. FAN. I enjoyed this book, but now I’m sad that I’ve finished it!
It started out good, but then was too unrealistic. Very wordy.
Not as good as the average Baldacci book. The plot is a bit of a stretch but is inter-connected and involved as your typical Baldacci plot.
Great book. Fast paced. Lots of twists. Great characters. Could really see it happening in real life
I’m reading it now. Love Atlee Pine! I know I’ll love the book as much as every other book David Baldacci writes!
Hopefully the main character will develop more fully and the plots will be a little more realistic. Excellent writing though.
