Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It’s seared into Atlee Pine’s memory: the kidnapper’s chilling rhyme as he chose … chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.
She never saw Mercy again.
Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She’s the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.
So when one of the Grand Canyon’s mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she’s abruptly called off the case.
If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it…

Attlee Pine is an unusual character; I’ll be interested to see if Baldacci continues her story.
Great thriller. Strong female MC but also good support characters. Action-packed with some twists along the way. Atlee Pine is a smart and tough, but not “in-your-face”. She believes in her job and doing what needs to be done.Very enjoyable book and hope another book in the series comes soon.
An excellent read!
Another of Baldacci’s winners! See review on Amazon
good story well told except for the ending which leaves things up in the air. The story continues in the next book in the series, also without an ending
I liked the book very much but was disappointed with the ending. I guess this will be a series or at least another book to resolve the mystery in this one.
Vintage Baldacci! Another new character to enjoy in future episodes.
I liked this book. Atlee Pine is a great new character!
Baldacci is one of my favorite authors, and I enjoyed this book with his newest heroine, a dynamic female protagonist.
I have read most of his books so I was really looking forward to this new series. This is a good story, but there is so much packed into one book, it’s a borderline impossible story line. Not sure I’d continue this series.
Love Baldacci’s new character, Atlee Pine.
Not his best but intriguing character for the start of a new series.
Not my favorite of his. Not sure I’ll follow this series.
Like all of Baldacci’s books…outstanding.
It was a captivating read. I will read more by Balducci. But I hate reviewing g books
Good read. Worth your time.
Everything this author writes is good (including this book). He is beating his own story line. Should have shelved it for six months- reviewed and then done a rewrite. Sorry David – you have done better.
Baldacci does it again! I really liked his new character and am looking forward to the next book.
Great new character from David Baldacci. The female lead, “Atlee Pine”, is very complex and entertaining. The story moves quickly and is entertaining. Perhaps Lee Child needs to follow Baldacci’s and John Sandford’s idea of staying fresh with new characters.
Atlee Pine is a new favorite character…takes you back to early Hunt Club days. Story just beyond belief, but these days almost anything is fair game. Best David B. book in a while.
